Chapter 23 A Mother's Love That Touches the Heart

As lunchtime approached, Li Cheng'an felt a surge of anxiety as he watched his father still not return.

He poked at the rice in his bowl with his chopsticks, seemingly casually, and hesitated for a long time before looking up at his mother across from him.

The words, though on the tip of her tongue, unconsciously took on a questioning tone, "Um...why didn't you wait for Dad to eat?"

Su Jingjing put down her chopsticks, looked at the two little ones in front of her, and told them about Li Hanting going out for training.

"Don't worry, he should be back tomorrow."

Li Cheng'an was relieved; his father had experienced something similar before.

If he's away for too long, he'll ask Aunt Huang on the second floor to keep an eye on him.

After dinner, Li Cheng'an pulled his sister into the house and locked the door, fearing that Su Jingjing would go crazy and beat or scold them again.

The little girl wanted to help her mother clear the dishes, but her older brother forcibly pulled her into the room. Subconsciously, she still trusted her brother more.

Su Jingjing's eyelids twitched. The last look the brat gave her when he entered the room contained a blatant warning. Was her level of trust really that low?

No matter how much she tried to comfort herself, she still felt a little disappointed. She felt even more wronged than Dou E!

While her brother wasn't paying attention, Li Yuanyuan's eyes darted around, and she slipped off the bed, running out the door without even putting on her shoes.

Li Cheng'an was still rambling on about something unrelated when he suddenly noticed a small figure running barefoot outside. Before he could even wonder, he immediately grabbed his sister's shoes and followed her.

"Yuanyuan, put on your shoes."

The floor was chilly in the summer, and my younger sister, being rather thin, was bound to catch a chill.

Su Jingjing paused in clearing the dishes, not having time to figure out what had happened, when a little dumpling ran over and hugged her leg, looking up at her with bright, sparkling eyes.

Before she could even be surprised, her eyes caught sight of Yuan Yuan's tiny, pinkish-white feet. She immediately squatted down, picked Yuan Yuan up, and gently rubbed her little feet to try and ward off the chill.

"Why did Yuanyuan come out without shoes? What if she catches a cold?"

In my memory, Yuanyuan would catch a cold several times a year. Although it wasn't a serious illness, her immunity was getting weaker and weaker each time. This was all related to the original owner's careless upbringing of the child.

Despite being beaten and scolded by the original owner, An'an grew stronger and stronger, and her health remained excellent; she never caught a cold.

On the contrary, Yuan Yuan was physically weak from birth, and coupled with the lack of careful care in her later years, it is already a miracle that she has survived to this day.

"Mom, I want to help you with the chores."

Seeing that her mother still cared about her, Li Yuanyuan's face also showed a happy smile, like a pure snowflake, making people feel peaceful and warm.

"I can wash dishes and wipe tables."

Afraid that her mother would kick her out, she immediately volunteered to sell herself, since she could actually do these jobs anyway.

"Little sister, let me help you put on your shoes."

Li Chengan listened quietly for a while before speaking up to help his sister put on her shoes.

Judging from his skillful movements, he must often take care of his younger sister.

Su Jingjing finally understood why Yuanyuan had been able to survive until now; it must be inseparable from An'an's care. No wonder he harbored such resentment towards the original owner.

Her brother remained silent, and Li Yuanyuan assumed he was angry. She stood obediently and cautiously tugged at his sleeve, "Brother..."

That pitiful appearance completely extinguished Li Cheng'an's temper.

Sigh, my younger sister still longs for her mother's presence.

She wasn't wrong either.

Touching his younger sister's face, he grinned at her and said, "Brother isn't angry, and will never be angry with Yuanyuan."

As long as he smiles, his sister feels that he is not angry.

"You go ahead with your work, your brother is here watching over you."

After saying that, she walked to the side and sat down, and finally gave her mother a complicated look.

Su Jingjing was deeply moved; the brother and sister had such a good relationship!

Of course, she only dared to let Yuanyuan hold the small bowls and chopsticks, but the little one was still very busy and would smile at her and An'an from time to time.

The mother and daughter worked together and finally managed to clean up the dishes.

Yuanyuan inevitably got some stains on her body, so Su Jingjing offered to help her take a bath, which she gladly accepted.

Li Cheng'an was still worried, so he moved the chair closer to the bathroom.

Since his father wasn't home, he was responsible for taking good care of his younger sister. He would immediately inform his father if his mother showed any unusual behavior.

What Li Cheng'an didn't notice was that, without realizing it, he had begun to regard Su Jingjing as his mother in his heart, and stopped calling her an old hag.

Before long, he realized he had been presumptuous. He heard the sounds of the mother and daughter playing and laughing coming from the bathroom. It was clear that Yuanyuan was having a lot of fun.

After his sister came out, he went in and quickly took a shower.

After several days of training, he seemed to have gotten used to taking a shower every night and no longer found it troublesome; he even felt uncomfortable if he didn't shower for a day.

I really don't know how I survived a month without showering.

Li Cheng'an thought his sister had already gone back to her room, but when he came out of the shower, he saw his mother holding his sister in her arms and coaxing her to sleep.

One hand was gently patting, and an unknown tune was being hummed.

At that moment, he felt envious!

From the time he could remember, he never experienced maternal love, only endless insults, let alone his mother coaxing him to sleep.

Fortunately, he was strong and gradually stopped craving his mother's love, and he took good care of his younger sister.

Seeing this, Li Cheng'an realized that he still longed for his mother's love.

Whenever Da Pang talked about how much his mother doted on him, Li Cheng'an would pretend not to care, but in reality, he was extremely jealous.

Wu Xiuying may not have had her share of troubles outside the home, but she devoted herself to Da Pang and at least fulfilled her responsibilities as a mother.

Sometimes he wondered if he and his sister should never have been born.

Su Jingjing gently carried Yuanyuan to the bed. The little one smiled sweetly, turned over, and continued sleeping, seemingly undisturbed.

This was the first time she had ever looked so closely at her two children's room. Not only was the space small, but the furniture was also minimal, consisting of just a small bed, a dilapidated wardrobe, a writing desk in the corner, and two chairs.

This is probably the newest furniture. Li Hanting must have bought it specifically because the two children need to do their homework. In other aspects, men really aren't that thoughtful.

It seems that to make up for the lack of maternal love in a child, every aspect needs to be taken care of.

With a sigh, I covered the little one with the blanket and left the room.

Seeing An'an's dazed expression, Su Jingjing said gently, "An'an, why are you standing here?"

As she walked over, she said, "Your little sister is already asleep, go inside and go to sleep."

Hearing his mother's affectionate voice, Li Cheng'an looked up blankly; she had never called him so intimately before.

She's changed. I really hope she doesn't change back.

Su Jingjing understood the child's inner suffering, but she didn't bring it up openly. She continued to nag, "Go to sleep now, you have to get up early for school tomorrow."

"By the way, what do you want for breakfast tomorrow?"

She does her best to make whatever her two children want to eat.

Yuanyuan wants to eat eggs, but we don't know what An'an wants to eat yet.
