Those few days back in the countryside were a nightmare. If she hadn't wanted to go back to visit her family, she would never have wanted to go back to that den of wolves.
Yan Xiaohua didn't take it seriously, "She's not stupid, she'll go home by herself."
Yan Yikuan stood at the door, holding his daughter's hand. "What's wrong?"
His sharp gaze swept over Yan Xiaohua; he too felt a headache coming on from this younger sister.
Yan Xiaohua rolled her eyes. "Look, I'm back now, aren't I?" She then poured herself a drink of water.
"Mother."
He Zhaodi quickly turned around, stepped forward and hugged her daughter, feeling as if she had lost her and found her again.
"Xiaoyun, where did you go?"
"Mom, this morning I played with Big Fatty, An'an and Yuanyuan, and then Aunt Jingjing said she would cook something delicious for us."
He Zhaodi touched her forehead. "So you ate lunch at Aunt Jingjing's house?"
"Mmm, it's delicious."
Yan Xiaoyun turned her head sharply, "Mom, look, my belly is all round."
He Zhaodi stopped crying and smiled, "Mom saw it."
"How about we go inside and do our homework first?"
"Okay." Yan Xiaoyun glanced at her father and ran into her room, not even sparing her aunt a look, as if she didn't exist.
"Why are you back at noon? Have you eaten?"
Yan Yikuan stepped forward and instinctively took his wife's hand, but she shook it off.
His hand froze in mid-air, momentarily stunned.
Yan Xiaohua's eyes widened. "Hmph... How could you treat my brother like this?"
"Shut up, isn't it chaotic enough already?"
Yan Yikuan gritted his teeth; the root of the problem lay with her.
"Brother, I didn't do anything to you."
She was still a little intimidated by her older brother.
"I was worried about Xiaoyun, so I came back at noon to check on her."
He Zhaodi wasn't targeting her husband; she was just feeling a little uncomfortable.
“Xiaohua, when we were in the countryside, didn’t you say you were there to take care of Xiaoyun? But after spending these few days together, I’ve realized you haven’t done that at all. You should go back.”
Yan Xiaohua stared wide-eyed. Was this really He Zhaodi's words?
"How dare you kick me out? Aren't you afraid I'll go back and tell Mom?"
She turned and tugged at Yan Yikuan's sleeve, "Brother, aren't you going to do anything about her? She's trying to drive your only sister away."
Yan Yikuan brushed her hand away. "Your sister-in-law and I think the same way. Think about how much trouble you've caused these past few days."
It's just stealing a few vegetable leaves and arguing with someone, right?
Isn't this normal in the countryside? What's the big deal?
"I'll buy you a ticket tomorrow, so you can pack your things and go back right away."
Upon hearing her words, Yan Yikuan immediately flew into a rage.
Yan Xiaoyun plopped down in the chair, seemingly fearless.
"Brother, to be honest with you, Mom wants you to find me a job. If I go back directly, she'll definitely come after me."
He Zhaodi glanced at her husband instinctively, but she wasn't too surprised.
After all, this is more like the style of the mother and daughter—only considering their own interests.
"Do you think jobs in the city are so easy to find? You can't even read a single word, what can you do?"
Yan Yikuan retorted without holding back.
He gently patted his wife's hand to reassure her.
"Then why was my sister-in-law able to find a job? I want to have the same job as her."
Working long hours every day, they must earn a lot.
Do you know how to mend clothes?
Yan Yikuan retorted with a question.
"I will," he replied, his neck stiff.
"Forget it, with your amateurish needlework, you'll just ruin their fabric."
Yan Xiaohua was scolded and lost face. "How can you talk to your sister like that?"
After saying that, she angrily ran downstairs.
"Hmph... You think you can send me home? No way. I'll just pretend to be sick tomorrow."
“I just saw He Zhaodi rush back.”
Some people were gossiping under the big tree, while another asked suspiciously, "Isn't she supposed to be not coming back at noon?"
"Who knows? Maybe they're feeling pretty smug now that they have a salary in hand."
Zhou Qian said sourly, "Hmph...who told her to marry the regimental commander's wife? If it weren't for Su Jingjing, she might be living a worse life than us."
Isn't that terrible? Half of their monthly allowance is sent back to their hometown.
Yan Xiaohua listened attentively from the side, and an idea immediately came to her mind.
"Is Su Jingjing, whom you just mentioned, also someone from the family compound?"
"Huh...who are you?"
They suddenly appeared, startling Zhou Qian and her companion.
"She is Company Commander Yan's sister."
After all, Yan Xiaohua had many heroic deeds; it would be difficult for her not to know her.
"Yes, yes, I am Yan Yikuan's sister. Who is this Su Jingjing you just mentioned?"
It turns out that being the company commander's sister is quite useful.
If Yan Xiaohua had a tail, she would float away.
"Su Jingjing is our regimental commander's wife, and she's your sister-in-law's boss."
"Which room is she staying in?"
Yan Xiaohua thought to herself, "Since you're unwilling to help me, then I'll fight for it myself and prove you wrong."
"I'm staying in the room opposite my sister-in-law's. It's just a coincidence, though; she just came back from the city today."
Zhou Qian belatedly realized, "Why are you asking these questions?"
"It's nothing." Yan Xiaohua couldn't suppress the smile on her lips, got up, and ran upstairs.
She had been looking at the room across the street for the past two days, but hadn't seen anyone going in or out, so she gave up on the idea.
He ran to Su Jingjing's door in one breath. He wanted to knock on the door, but after thinking about it, he knocked softly instead.
