You should know that although spirit stones are not very useful for people who cannot cultivate, they are very valuable! They are almost as valuable as gold.
The fact that two spirit stones were found in Widow Liu's house is enough to make anyone envious.
Just as Lin Jingge was about to put the spirit stones away, people started gossiping.
"If adopting a child would earn me two spirit stones this big, I'd be willing to adopt one too."
What was said unintentionally was taken to heart by the listener.
The women gathered around Widow Liu's house rolled their eyes.
“I’m the one who helps out at Widow Liu’s house most of the time. How could this be any outsider like you?” said a woman who was quite close to Widow Liu.
The woman originally didn't want to get involved, but the spirit stones were too tempting; she had never seen anything so valuable in her life.
She was usually closest to Widow Liu, and thought the other woman was so poor she was about to starve, but who knew she had hidden a treasure.
Lin Jingge wasn't surprised at all by such comments. After all, when she found the spirit stone, everyone's gazes were practically piercing through her hand holding it.
Getting rid of a child with just two spirit stones is a good deal.
Just as Lin Jingge was about to ask Liu Yan to be relieved of this burden, a picture of a girl crying on her mother flashed through her mind.
A pang of heartache swept over her.
If the child stays with her, he may not become rich and powerful, but at least he will be able to eat his fill. However, if she were to hand the child over to this group of wolves and tigers who covet the two spirit stones in her hands, she might just be pushing him into a pit of fire.
Thinking of this, Lin Jingge paused, and changed the words that were about to come out to something else.
“Liu Yan was personally handed over to me by Widow Liu, so what’s wrong with you?” Lin Jingge raised her eyes and looked at the woman who spoke with a stern face.
"Widow Liu is dead now, and there's no way to verify what you're saying. Who knows if it's true or not?"
“That’s right. Widow Liu is a member of our Qingyun Village after all. This matter should be arranged by the village chief.”
As the saying goes, three women make a drama, and Liu the widow's house was surrounded by all the women in the village, who chattered on and on.
They couldn't have it themselves, and they didn't want Lin Jingge to have it either.
Lin Jingge's head was throbbing from their comments, so she looked at the village chief to see what he would say.
Normally, when faced with disputes, the village chief would always be the first to step forward and resolve the issue, but today, for some reason, he remained silent.
Lin Jingge followed the village chief's gaze, which finally landed on the spirit stone in her hand.
Well, it's all because of these spirit stones; even the village chief is interested in them.
Lin Jingge, who had been squatting on the ground picking up things, stood up and put the spirit stone back into the wooden box where it had been placed.
Lin Jingge: "Village Chief, how do you think this matter should be arranged?"
Before the village chief could reply, Liu Yan rushed towards Lin Jingge.
"I want to stay with my sister, I don't want anyone else!" Liu Yan hugged Lin Jingge's legs tightly. Her body was not fully developed, and she was only half the height of Lin Jingge.
After entering the house, Liu Yan remained silent, silently watching Lin Jingge tidy up her mother's room and silently listening to the sarcastic gossip of the crowd. Finally, when everyone was arranging her assignment, she couldn't help but stand up.
She didn't know how valuable the spirit stones were; she only knew that when those people saw the two stones, they acted like dogs seeing bones.
That gaze frightened her.
"You silly child, haven't I been good to you enough? I'm willing to take you in, so stop bothering Miss Mu. She's an unmarried woman, raising a child as young as you. How will she ever get married?"
After the woman who was usually close to Widow Liu finished speaking, she stepped forward, grabbed Liu Yan's arm, and pulled her outside: "If you come with your aunt, you can play with your brother and sister."
When Liu Yan first heard that she would affect her sister's marriage, she hesitated for a moment. But when the aunt pulled her, for some reason, she felt nothing but fear.
She clung even tighter to Lin Jingge's legs, crying out, "I don't want to! I want to stay with my sister! I'll be her slave even if it means working like a dog for her! I don't want to go with you!"
Children are the most sensitive, especially since these people in front of her made no attempt to hide their desire for the two spirit stones. Just looking at their wolfish eyes terrified her.
"Why are you so disobedient? I told you to stay with your aunt."
Because Liu Yan was holding on tightly, the aunt couldn't pull her away for a moment. Finally, her eyes darkened, she tightened her grip, and even tried to pinch Liu Yan with her other hand.
Lin Jingge noticed this small gesture and, with a cold face, pushed the woman away.
She was quite strong, and the aunt was caught off guard and was pushed back several steps before she swayed and fell to the ground.
"Ouch!" the woman cried out in pain, rubbing her sore bottom as she got up from the ground. "Why did you hit me! Village chief, you have to stand up for me!"
“Village chief, since this child is willing to come with me, I am also willing to adopt her. Let’s just leave it at that. What do you think?” Lin Jingge ignored the aunt who was shouting and yelling to the side, and instead stared at the village chief.
The village chief moved his lips but did not utter a sound, his gaze fixed on the wooden box containing two spirit stones.
Liu Yan clung to Lin Jingge's leg, turned to look at the village chief, and seeing that he remained silent, she burst into tears again: "I don't care, I want to stay with my sister, I won't go back with you, just give up on that idea!"
"Village Chief!" Lin Jingge's voice was somewhat cold. Seeing that the village chief remained silent, she raised her voice.
