Xiao Yan sighed, pulled on the reins, and was about to leave when he saw Wen Shiqing walking towards him in the distance. He quickly spurred his horse over and greeted him warmly, "Old Wen." He smiled, revealing a set of white teeth.
Wen Shiqing glanced at him with some surprise and said politely, "Duke Jingguo."
"Today I finally know that you, Lao Wen, are the most courageous person. I've decided to be your friend," Xiao Yan announced loudly.
Wen Shiqing's lips twitched slightly. He didn't want to talk to him, got into his own carriage, and prepared to leave.
Unexpectedly, Xiao Yan rode up on horseback, walked beside the carriage window, and started chatting with him.
Finally, she even went back to the Wen residence with him and had a meal before leaving.
When Wen Tingyun returned, he happened to see Xiao Yan leaving outside the door and asked, "Father, why is the Duke of Jingguo here?"
Wen Shiqing was both amused and exasperated. "He's probably just here to freeload a meal."
Wen Tingyun was somewhat surprised.
Wen Shiqing said, "Let's go inside and talk about it."
Upon entering the mansion, Wen Shiqing said with a grave expression, "You weren't in court today, so you don't know what happened there. I think the Emperor has already become distant from the Regent."
Wen Tingyun frowned, but then said, "Over the years, the Regent has done too much for the Great Cause, pacifying the four seas, repelling foreign invaders, and wholeheartedly assisting the Emperor in consolidating the Great Cause's rule. Now that the Great Cause's regime is stable, the Emperor no longer wants to hide behind the Regent."
“So what if he doesn’t want to hide anymore?” Wen Shiqing frowned.
Although he asked the question, he already had the answer in his heart.
The father and son exchanged a knowing glance and neither discussed the topic further.
As soon as Wen Tingyun returned to the courtyard, he saw Lu Yingying sitting there doing needlework.
But I don't know what I was thinking about, I didn't notice for a moment and pricked my finger.
Seeing the beads of blood emerging from her fingertips, Lu Yingying sighed and was about to wipe them with a handkerchief when a slender hand suddenly reached out and grasped her finger.
The next moment, her fingertips were enveloped in a warm, wet sensation.
She was stunned for a moment, then realized what she had done, blushed, withdrew her finger, and said angrily, "How could you do such a thing?"
As she spoke, she turned her head in a panic and saw that the maid who had been serving her was no longer there, and then she breathed a slight sigh of relief.
But her face was still completely red.
Wen Tingyun chuckled, curled his long finger, and flicked it against the tip of her nose, teasing her on purpose, "How did I do anything reckless?"
"You shouldn't have..." Lu Yingying stopped herself, ultimately too ashamed to speak.
Wen Tingyun sat down beside her. "Then tell me, why do you get distracted while doing needlework? You've seemed restless these past few days, what happened?"
Lu Yingying met his wise, all-seeing dark eyes, hesitated for a moment, and ultimately did not speak her mind. She simply shook her head and said, "Nothing's wrong."
Wen Tingyun suddenly chuckled, his long, slender fingers lifting her delicate chin with a half-smile. "Lu Yingying, we've known each other for quite some time now, and I know perfectly well what's on your mind. I'm giving you a chance to be honest with me. If you're unwilling to speak, I always have other ways."
Lu Yingying was stunned for a moment, somewhat puzzled as to what other method he was referring to. Then she saw his slender hand suddenly reach out and cover her abdomen.
Then, in what could be described as a gentle voice, he said, "The first three months are over."
