In the study.
Gu Linchao sat behind his desk, his face ashen as he looked at the woman whose head was always drooping.
If he hadn't seen it with his own eyes, he wouldn't have believed that she could be so rude.
She uttered vulgar language at the drop of a hat, and her behavior was like that of a shrew; she even straddled the wall...
She came from a prestigious family, and even if she was uneducated, she should at least have received proper upbringing and know etiquette. However—
Her behavior today has truly overturned his understanding of the world.
After a long pause, he said in a deep voice, "Wen Nongnong, what other explanation do you have?"
Wen Nong Nong knew that she had probably, possibly, really angered Gu Linchao today, but she couldn't be blamed for this, could she?
"Believe it or not, it really wasn't me who wanted to climb the wall, it was your wicked uncle..." Upon meeting the man's cold eyes, she automatically changed her tune, "It was your uncle who put me up there."
"How dare you say that?" Gu Linchao's handsome face turned ashen. "Shouldn't you be staying in Chenxiang Courtyard copying scriptures? No matter how ill-mannered Xiao Yan is, he can't possibly run into your courtyard to catch you."
"I got tired of copying the scriptures, so I wanted to go out for some fresh air. Who knew I'd run into that unlucky guy, Xiao Yan..." Her voice trailed off again when she met the man's unsmiling gaze.
Gu Linchao looked at her in disbelief. She had made a mistake, yet she could still be so self-righteous.
"Do you have some misunderstanding about being under house arrest?" Gu Linchao laughed angrily.
Wen Nong Nong was a little scared of him. He was better off not smiling. Smiling like that was really creepy.
Of course, she didn't dare say it directly.
“Even prisoners get to go outside for fresh air,” she muttered to herself.
Unfortunately, Gu Linchao had such good hearing that he heard every single word.
He sneered, "You compare yourself to a prisoner? Are you complaining that I've been too lenient with you?"
"Of course not." Wen Nongnong hurriedly waved her hand, her little face falling, feeling utterly exhausted.
She really just went out for some fresh air. If she had known it would cause so much trouble, she would never have gone out.
"So what do you want?" she said, seemingly resigned to her fate.
Whether she sticks her head out to the left or right, she'll still get stabbed; it's better to just give her a quick death.
Seeing her defiant expression, Gu Linchao suddenly said, "It seems that confinement and copying scriptures are useless to you. Tomorrow I will invite a matron from the palace to teach you proper manners."
Wen Nongnong was terrified and held out Erkang's hand, "No, Your Highness... I promise I won't go anywhere else, I'll just stay in the courtyard copying scriptures, really, I promise."
"Have you truly realized your mistake?" Gu Linchao asked, pursing his lips.
Wen Nongnong nodded vigorously, her attitude of admitting her mistake better than ever before. "It's true, I have deeply realized my mistake and will definitely correct it so that Your Highness won't have to worry about me." As she spoke, a string of regretful tears streamed down her face.
Gu Linchao: "..."
Seeing the genuine tears streaming down her face, he frowned. It seemed she was truly afraid and realized her mistake. His voice softened involuntarily, "Now that you know, go back and stay put. Without my permission, you are not allowed to step out of the courtyard."
"Yes, Your Highness." Wen Nongnong curtsied and prepared to leave.
"Wait a minute." Gu Linchao suddenly called out to her.
"Does Your Highness have any further instructions?" Wen Nongnong suppressed the urge to curse, her voice gentle.
