Chapter Forty-Three: Your Majesty's Ignorance

Xiao Yan quickly waved his hand, "Don't be angry. Those words weren't said by me. I heard them from others. You have no idea what people are saying about you outside."

"Si Yi!" Gu Linchao said in a deep voice, his brows and eyes already covered with frost.

Si Yi immediately appeared in a flash, a flash of snow-white sword light, and the next moment, the sword was at Xiao Yan's neck.

Xiao Yan swallowed hard, pushing the blade away with his fingers. "Let's talk this out. Using knives and swords only hurts our harmony. I didn't say those things; I heard them from outside. That's why I came to tell you right away."

Gu Linchao glanced at him and ordered Si Yi, "Go investigate!"

"There's no need for such trouble. You can just ask the Princess Consort directly," Xiao Yan said calmly.

Gu Linchao was taken aback. "What do you mean?"

"It's said that you can't do that, and that's what your good princess said herself." Xiao Yan was always eager to stir up trouble.

Gu Linchao scrutinized him, and seeing that he didn't seem to be lying, he pondered for a moment and then said to Si Yi, "Go and invite the Princess Consort."

"Yes." Si Yi accepted the order and left.

Seeing this, Xiao Yan was about to sit down when his good nephew gave the order to leave, "Someone, show the guests out!"

"Sigh, it's almost dinner time. At least let me finish my meal before you leave," Xiao Yan said hurriedly. He didn't want to miss out on the excitement that was about to unfold.

Gu Linchao glanced at him indifferently, "You can stay, but tomorrow, I will ask the Emperor to issue an edict to bestow a marriage upon you, and you can choose for yourself."

Upon hearing this, Xiao Yan's handsome face fell. "You win!" he said, and left reluctantly.

...

When Wen Nongnong followed Si Yi into the study, she was still a little confused.

Why did Gu Linchao summon her here?

"Si Yi, what does your prince want with me?" she couldn't help but ask before entering the study.

Si Yi turned around and glanced at her, his expression cold. "Your Highness, go in and ask her yourself."

Seeing that she couldn't get any information out of him, Wen Nongnong had no choice but to go into the study.

In the spacious study, Gu Linchao sat behind his desk handling government affairs, while Wang Houde stood respectfully to one side.

The whole room was quiet.

"Your Highness, is there something important that you summoned me here?" Wen Nongnong gave a perfunctory curtsy before straightening up.

She was enjoying tea and snacks in the courtyard, having a wonderful time, but Si Yi suddenly came to invite her, interrupting her leisurely time, which made her a little depressed.

Isn't it good that we all keep to ourselves and don't interfere with each other?

Gu Linchao glanced at her, then looked at Wang Houde and said, "Step down."

Wang Houde had originally intended to give Wen Nongnong some hints, but upon hearing this, he had no choice but to leave.

Wen Nongnong looked at Gu Linchao with some confusion.

What was his intention in sending the person away?

"Wen Nongnong, I thought you were a smart person," Gu Linchao said slowly.

Wen Nongnong thought to herself: Of course she's smart. But on the surface she said, "Your Majesty, I am ignorant and do not understand what Your Highness means. Please enlighten me."

Gu Linchao recalled Xiao Yan's words, his handsome face darkening. He hadn't expected this woman to be such a gossip, spreading rumors behind his back and ruining his reputation.

"You should know that marrying you was not my own intention, but a marriage bestowed by the Empress Dowager. But now that you are my wife, I will give you the respect you deserve, but on the condition that you follow the rules and behave yourself." His cold voice slowly echoed in the room.

Wen Nongnong frowned. "Your Majesty, I have always been well-behaved and obedient." She paused, glancing at his somewhat displeased expression, and added, "During the six months Your Majesty was away at the border, I have always been law-abiding and dutiful, and have never dared to bring shame upon Your Majesty..."

She automatically ignored the fact that the original owner had eloped with someone, and said this very naturally, without any reluctance.
