Chapter Four: Gu Linchao

In the deep, dark alley, a carriage stood quietly.

The color of the carriage almost blended into the night.

You wouldn't notice it at all if you didn't look closely.

The carriage was surrounded by heavily armed guards, each with sharp and menacing eyes.

Seeing the scene before him, Xue Ziyu turned to run, but found his legs had gone weak with fear and he couldn't move at all.

Seeing the cold-faced youth approaching, he leaned against the wall and shouted, his voice trembling with fear, "Who...who are you people?"

The cool-looking young man in black simply glanced at him expressionlessly, a hint of disdain in his eyes. With a wave of his hand, two armored guards behind him stepped forward and lifted Xue Ziyu up.

"You, you let me go..." Xue Ziyu wanted to shout, but when he met the cold eyes of the armored guards, he automatically fell silent and dared not struggle anymore.

The boy in black turned and walked to the carriage beside him, whispering a report to the person inside.

"The person who was having a secret rendezvous with Xue Ziyu at the back gate of the Wen residence just now was Miss Wen the Third, not the Princess Consort..."

"Are you sure you're not mistaken?" A moment later, a clear, deep voice came from inside the carriage.

“I saw it clearly, it was definitely not the Princess Consort. Moreover, Miss Wen’s secret rendezvous was caught red-handed by the Princess Consort’s maid and her men, and it’s probably already causing a stir in the Wen residence.” The young man in black frowned as he finished speaking, and when he glanced at Xue Ziyu beside him, he added, “By the way, Xue Ziyu ran away, but our men caught him.”

"Xue Ziyu?" A deep voice slowly sounded from inside the carriage.

“Exactly,” the boy in black replied.

At this moment, the armored guards threw Xue Ziyu directly onto the ground next to the carriage.

Looking at the black carriage before him, Xue Ziyu felt an inexplicable sense of suffocation. Without the armored guards even shouting at him, he immediately knelt down and begged for mercy, "My lord, spare my life! I am just a commoner, I have always been law-abiding and have never done anything immoral. Please, my lord, spare me..."

The surroundings were quiet, and no one in the carriage spoke.

For some reason, Xue Ziyu became increasingly uneasy. Large beads of sweat slid down his head, and a chill spread to his limbs and bones.

He dared not move.

After a long while, a gust of wind blew in from somewhere, lifting a corner of the carriage curtain and revealing the scene inside.

The man in the black robe was looking down and flipping through files. Although his face was not shown, his profile was noble and elegant, giving people a feeling of aloofness and asceticism.

He seemed not to hear Xue Ziyu's pleas for mercy.

Long, slender fingers with distinct joints tapped lightly on the small table.

Each beat, rhythmic and distinct, sounded to Xue Ziyu like a death knell.

Just as Xue Ziyu was trembling with fear, a soft sneer suddenly came from inside the carriage.

The voice was very soft, yet it was impossible to ignore.

"Would Wen Nong Nong even be interested in someone like this?"

It seems that they somewhat disagree with the other party's perspective.

Xue Ziyu wasn't entirely stupid. He didn't understand at first, but then, thinking of the heavily guarded armored soldiers around them, a sudden realization dawned on him. He nearly wet himself in shock and hurriedly clarified, "Your Highness, please understand! My relationship with the Princess Consort is completely innocent... nothing happened... Oh, by the way, this was all a scheme set up by Miss Wen. It was her. She wanted me to seduce the Princess Consort and elope with her... I didn't do anything at all..."

The aloof young man standing beside the carriage seemed slightly surprised upon hearing this. "Are you telling the truth?"

"I dare not conceal anything, every word is true, absolutely true. I beg Your Highness to have mercy and spare me..." Xue Ziyu kowtowed and begged for mercy.
