Chapter 30 Pregnancy and Love in the Rain
A fierce storm raged; the rain hadn't started yet, but there was lightning and thunder, making the weather look frightening.
If a typhoon hits and blows away all those newly unloaded seedlings, ruining them, then it's all over.
Su Yuanzheng called Xu Lei while driving. Xu Lei was unloading goods. "Don't worry, we're working on it now. There are just too many seedlings, so we might not have enough manpower."
"If all else fails, then..."
Before Su Yuanzheng could finish speaking, Xu Lei threw his phone aside and said, "I'm not talking to you anymore. It's about to rain, so let's get to work."
Su Qinglian followed Xia Yutong the whole way, asking, "What good will you do if you go?"
"Don't worry about it!"
Xia Yutong ran outside. Although she was pregnant, she was physically weak and showed no signs of pregnancy.
Su Qinglian ran out, and Xiao Mi followed. She had to keep an eye on her daughter behind her.
"Slow down, Xiaomi, don't let the strong wind blow it away."
Su Qinglian bent down to hug her daughter and followed behind Xia Yutong. She couldn't run fast, while Xia Yutong had already sprinted away.
She had to help Su Yuanzheng. If something went wrong with these new seedlings, it would damage his confidence. He had obtained this sum of money through his relationship with Shang Xingchuan, and personal relationships are the most fragile thing.
Xu Lei and a few others were busy when they saw Xia Yutong running over.
"Sister-in-law, what brings you here?"
"Sister-in-law, Brother Yuanzheng hasn't come back yet!"
"I'm not here to see him."
Xia Yutong saw a pile of new seedlings outside. These seedlings were old seedlings that had just been brought over today. Su Yuanzheng had been very careful and compared prices everywhere in order for them to bloom faster.
Several truckloads were brought over, piled high, covering the red soil everywhere, with mud still clinging to the roots.
The mud is crucial; if it gets washed away by the rain, the survival rate will probably be reduced by half.
"Don't move it. Think of a way to find a greenhouse, preferably the kind where someone holds a banquet. Use plastic bags to surround it, and make sure the roots don't get wet!"
Xu Lei was stunned for a moment, "Sister-in-law..."
“You don’t have anywhere to put it. That’s a temporary tin shack over there, it’s not sturdy enough. Do you think it will fit?”
Xia Yutong's words made everyone realize that there were too many seedlings to fit in the soil. If they had known there would be such a heavy rain, they would have asked more people to plant them, and they could have finished planting by tomorrow morning.
But fate is unpredictable... It was too late.
"I'll go find something."
"You guys move the rest of your things over there too. That side won't provide any shelter. Do you think the rain just falls straight down from the sky?"
The rain in Haicheng was accompanied by wind, a sudden downpour that swept everywhere, covering everything overhead. If any part of the sky was exposed, rain would inevitably drift in from that direction, making it completely useless.
After Xia Yutong finished speaking, she immediately helped move the plastic canopies. "Xu Lei, remember to ask around. Many villagers have plastic canopies. We can borrow them and fix them to the sides with stones. The more seedlings we have, the better!"
"Try to cover it completely!"
Xu Lei nodded and quickly ran to borrow a plastic greenhouse. After a few steps, he turned back and said, "Sister-in-law, don't move it."
"It's nothing, just a few vines..."
She received little pay and wasn't considered to be doing hard labor, while everyone else was working themselves to the bone.
The lightning overhead illuminated the entire dark area. Although it was afternoon, it was as if the sky had suddenly turned dark, like the scene of Chenxiang rescuing his mother. A loud rumble of thunder seemed to split the sky apart.
The rain, as big as beans, started to fall. Su Qinglian, carrying Xiaomi, tripped and fell halfway and had to find a place to take shelter from the rain.
When he encountered Luo Caixia returning from outside, he asked, "What are you doing here?"
Su Qinglian was frantic. "Mom, hurry! Xia Yutong has run away!"
"ah?"
"She ran to the field and said it was going to rain because new seedlings had sprouted there!"
Upon hearing this, Luo Caixia started cursing, "Then why didn't you stop her? Why did you let her go?"
"I tried to stop him, but I couldn't."
"You... sigh!"
Luo Caixia was too lazy to say anything and hurriedly ran to the field. It started raining as soon as she stepped out.
Walking through the mud, the soles of their shoes grew thicker and thicker. Xia Yutong helped move seedlings in the rain, but Xu Lei still hadn't returned, and everyone was getting anxious.
"If this continues, Miao is truly doomed."
Xia Yutong was at a loss and suddenly felt somewhat helpless.
"Brother-in-law!"
She said to Liu Yaozong, "Go and find Xu Lei."
"Okay, I'll go then."
As soon as Liu Yaozong ran out, Su Yuanzheng's close friend said, "Sister-in-law, why did you let him go? You're giving him a chance to slack off."
Xu Lei had been borrowing the items for about ten minutes when the rain started to pour down. Xia Yutong and the others who stayed behind gave up on carrying them and instead used their bodies to block the base of the rose vines, afraid that the mud they had brought out would be washed away, leaving only the exposed vines...
"Why haven't they arrived yet?"
"I'm here, I'm here!"
Seeing this, Xu Lei was dumbfounded. "What are you doing? Hide! Don't get blown away by the wind!"
Everyone quickly helped to set up plastic tents to cover the seedlings. Xia Yutong was soaked to the bone and covered in mud.
Su Yuanzheng also arrived at the field, with Luo Caixia following closely behind.
"Tongtong!"
Upon seeing Su Yuanzheng, Xia Yutong burst into tears. She was soaked to the bone and looked even more frail. Her long hair flowed down in streams, and her curly hair was messy. Considering that she was pregnant, it was heartbreaking to see her like that.
Su Yuanzheng was so distressed that he almost burst into tears. "Why are you here instead of resting at home?"
He looked at her, cupped her face in his hands, and Xia Yutong didn't have time to say much to him, "Quick, go help."
Her clothes were covered in sticky mud, a rose petal was stuck to her collarbone, and her wrists had several cuts...
Su Yuanzheng said, "Get in the car, Tongtong."
Luo Caixia's legs went weak with fright. "How did it get like this?"
"mom!"
Su Yuanzheng called out and let go of her hand, and Luo Caixia helped her up.
Several grown men, each holding a plastic canopy, stood in the east, west, south, and north, braving the strong wind, and finally managed to cover the rose seedlings. However, water was unavoidable on the ground, and if the rain continued for a few more days, the vines near the ground would all rot.
Lightning flashed and thunder roared, and a fierce wind blew. Luo Caixia couldn't help but go to help her, supporting her to stand in a place where she could shelter from the rain. "Wait here for me for a moment."
As soon as Luo Caixia stepped into the rain, Xia Yutong rushed in to help.
Su Yuanzheng was soaked to the bone. "Tongtong, let's go back."
"I'm not going back. I'm fine. It's just a little rain. I'm not being dramatic."
"I'm letting you go back!"
Su Yuanzheng gripped the corner of the tent tightly, unable to let go, but his voice clearly indicated great anger.
Xia Yutong glanced at him, said nothing, and silently continued working.
