Chapter Forty-Nine: The Truth of History

One of the older historians, who was temporarily in charge of the Grand Historian's duties, was particularly frightened.

He suffered an even worse fate; he witnessed firsthand the Regent tying the Empress Dowager's head to a spear.

He didn't write "Regent Prince," but rather "stringing the Empress Dowager's head like candied hawthorns on a skewer"—that was already more than enough!

“Your Highness, the duty of a historian is to remember history,” the upright and incorruptible historian said, mustering his courage.

Even if the regent were to kill them, they wouldn't change!

Moreover, once the historians have written down their thoughts, the historical records cannot be altered.

Gu Mu smiled.

He did it on purpose.

He deliberately let the acting historian see the scene of him piercing the Empress Dowager's head with his spear.

Only in this way could those historians portray him as a villain in the Records of the Grand Historian.

But he's already sacrificed so much, betting his posthumous masterpieces on it! And that stingy system didn't even add a single villain value to his score.

It seems that it's really not easy to cheat out points in this system.

“Yes, it is right to remember history.” Gu Mu said with a smile. He waved his hand, and the real historian walked in from outside the door.

This historian is sixteen years old today and can succeed his father as the Grand Historian, responsible for writing historical records.

Before he turned sixteen, his uncle temporarily served as the Grand Historian, recording historical events with other historians.

"Jiang He, don't come any closer, go back right now!" the uncle of Da Shi, who had just turned 16, shouted urgently.

The regent's appearance here now suggests he's about to unleash a massacre.

They all knew Jiang He's character; like his father, he was upright, incorruptible, and unyielding to authority.

When it comes to recording history, one can devote all one's energy to meticulously unraveling the truth in order to restore the true history.

Jiang He's arrival might offend the Regent!

They can die, but Jiang He is young and promising; he shouldn't die!

"Jiang He, you just turned 16 today and are officially eligible to start work. We need to hold a ceremony for you. Can you come back tomorrow after we've finished the ceremony today?"

"Our history is already written. There's nothing to do today, so it would be better if you came back tomorrow!"

The historians all chimed in, urging Jiang He to go back, not giving him a chance to speak.

“No.” Standing behind Gu Mu, Jiang He said in a deep but steady voice, “You have not restored the true history.”

He placed the small box he was carrying on the table, his eyes resolute: "This is where the true face of history lies."

“When I was young, my father told me that the truth of things is often not the surface that others want us to see, but the side that they don’t want us to see.”

"As a historian, one must unravel the mystery and dispel the fog to reveal the truth."

Jiang He spoke each word with resounding force.

"The real history?" the historians murmured. They absolutely believed Jiang He, but they didn't understand his words: "The history we saw with our own eyes, could it be false?"

"That's true." Jiang He smiled.

"Then... what we're recording isn't the real history?" the historians asked in bewilderment.

"You'll know once you open it." Jiang He's eyes remained resolute throughout.

As the son of the Grand Historian, he knew from a young age that he would follow in his father's footsteps.

Therefore, even if one is under 16 years old, one cannot take over the position of Grand Historian.

He continued to do his best to restore the truth, both to prepare himself for taking over the position of Grand Historian in the future and to hone his abilities, and also because he was worried that others might be blinded by appearances and unable to restore the true history.

During this period, ever since the late emperor's mysterious and sudden death, he had been investigating the cause of the late emperor's death.

You wouldn't know unless you investigated, but once you did, you uncovered a huge secret.

The box contained all the evidence he had uncovered.

"Confessions?" The historians had already opened the box, and on top of it were several confessions.

After reading through several statements, they exclaimed in surprise, "Ah...this...so that's how it is!"

The imperial physician's statement: "The Empress Dowager, under the pretext of nourishing the late Emperor's body, prescribed several medicines and supervised the late Emperor to drink them every day. These medicines were indeed for nourishing the body, but I had no access to the Empress Dowager's palace and was unaware of them. The Empress Dowager kept a certain fragrance in her room every day. This fragrance could counteract the tonics. The effect was not obvious in the short term, but over time, it would weaken the late Emperor's body and cause him to suffer from heart disease."

The Empress Dowager's maid's statement: "This servant does not know where the Empress Dowager's spices come from. These are all handled by her trusted maids. But this servant has noticed a strange phenomenon: the Empress Dowager only puts out that kind of spice when the late Emperor comes to the Empress Dowager's palace. At other times, she puts out a different kind of spice. This servant thought that the late Emperor preferred that kind of spice."

Another imperial physician said, "It has been confirmed that the spice is incompatible with the tonic, and prolonged use will lead to physical weakness and heart disease."

Following the confession were spices brought back from the Empress Dowager's palace, and tonics prescribed for the late Emperor.

There are both witnesses and physical evidence.

Furthermore, when the late emperor passed away, it was the empress dowager in his palace, and the imperial edict was also in her hands. The one who inherited the throne was the empress dowager's son.

At this point, they all began to believe that the late emperor had actually been murdered by the Empress Dowager!

After all, similar things have happened in history.

No wonder... the tiger tally wasn't in the young emperor's hands, but in Gu Mu's...

It is self-evident who plotted to usurp the throne and who was the true successor designated by the late emperor.

For a moment, their gazes toward Gu Mu were complicated.

“If that’s the case, Your Highness cutting off the Empress Dowager’s head and hanging it on the city gate, while cruel, isn’t entirely unreasonable,” finally a historian said.
