Chapter Thirteen: Assassination Attempt

In an instant, all the people knelt down.

Their eyes were filled with tears.

It turns out that it wasn't God who came to save them.

It is their monarch, it is their supreme faith.

He witnessed the suffering of the common people.

He stood on earth, comforting this desolate land.

"Long live the Regent! Long live the Regent!" The deafening shouts were even more fervent than those heard when he seized power on the night the old emperor died suddenly.

This is the will of the people.

...

Prefect Chen did not know how he got back to his residence.

He felt like his head had been knocked off.

After arriving safely at the residence, he patted his chest, still shaken, and breathed a sigh of relief: "Fortunately, the Regent did not blame me."

Then a little smugness crept into his heart: after all, he was the prefect, and the regent had just taken power and his foundation was not stable. If he directly targeted high-ranking officials, it would inevitably cause turmoil in the court.

Prefect Chen, who had come with peace of mind, gave the servant who had reported to him earlier a cold look: "Guards! Beat this dog of a servant to death!"

"No, Your Excellency, I was wrong! Please forgive me this once!"

"No! This servant doesn't want to die!"

"Please, Your Excellency, spare this servant!"

...

Hearing the wailing of his lackey, Prefect Chen closed his eyes as if listening to beautiful music, and said coldly, "Hmph, you lackey, your life means nothing to me. Why should I let you go..."

As soon as he finished speaking, Prefect Chen felt a sudden darkness engulf his vision.

It felt like someone had put a sack over his head.

Immediately, he was struck hard on the back of the head and lost consciousness.

With the princess's token in one hand and the other hand, Lu Ming openly led Prefect Chen away from his courtyard.

Those servants who had originally been treated as lackeys by Prefect Chen now watched as he lay motionless in a sack, like a dead pig, and dared not utter a sound.

"At least dogs are loyal," Lu Ming muttered to himself as he jumped over the courtyard wall.

"But dogs are loyal to humans, not animals." Lu Ming immediately understood this.

In the shadows where no one can see.

The young man in a blue robe and straw hat watched the scene unfolding in the post station with a half-smile.

He drew his gleaming sword and carefully wiped it with a handkerchief.

Behind him stood several respectful men in black.

One of them clasped his hands in a respectful gesture and asked, "Why didn't you make your move on the first day?"

Logically, the first day, with the Regent exhausted from his journey, should have been the best time to strike.

But their master kept forbidding them from making a move.

"Don't ask," the young man in the blue robe said coldly in a voice that was neither clearly male nor female.

"I don't need to explain my reasons to you when I do things."

It was still a calm tone, but it was like a venomous snake, coldly crouching on a person's neck, flicking its tongue at the most vulnerable spot.

The man in black was immediately terrified and broke out in a cold sweat.

He really didn't want to talk to this young man in the blue robe.

Can……

"The master said that this mission must include killing the Regent, ensuring he can never return to the capital..."

Before the man in black could speak, he felt a chill on his neck.

The sword that the young man in the green robe had just wiped was now pressed against his neck.

It was so fast that people couldn't react in time.

"Don't try to teach me how to do things," the young man in the blue robe laughed in an extremely eerie tone.

The sword in his hand had disappeared at some point, sliding into its scabbard.

The man in black who had just spoken to him suddenly fell backward a few seconds later.

A scarlet line of blood appeared on his neck.

That night.

Gu Mu was fast asleep when he suddenly heard a sound coming from the roof.

It was only because of his extremely high level of cultivation that he was able to instinctively detect danger and then wake up.

In a split second, four men in black burst through the window and attacked him with their swords raised.

Gu Mu grabbed the python robe beside him, rolled the two swords that were attacking him together, and kicked one of them to the ground.

During the fight, he gestured backward, indicating that his assassins should hide so no one could see them and not reveal themselves unless absolutely necessary.

Good steel should be used where it's most needed.

These four men are all top-notch assassins, each strike aimed at the vitals.

If you're not careful, you might fall into a trap.

Although Gu Mu also had memories of the original owner's martial arts training in his mind, he didn't use them much and wasn't very proficient.

Despite his solid foundation, he gradually lost ground due to relying solely on muscle memory in his parries and attacks.

They were merely at a disadvantage.

The four men in black originally wanted to finish the fight quickly, but after a while, they realized something was wrong: "Wait a minute, didn't our master say that the Regent's martial arts were average? How come he seems stronger than us? The four of us can't even kill him?"

"As expected of the Regent, he's quite cunning."

"What's the meaning?"

"Don't you understand? He's been hiding his true strength from his master!"

"Fortunately, Master anticipated this situation, so..."

One of the men in black gritted his teeth and said, "Let's retreat first. Next time that person makes a move, the Regent will be dead for sure!"

Four men in black broke out of the window.

Gu Mu did not pursue.

because--

He received a system task.

"Task Three for Promoting Villain Culture:"

Using the princess's spirit to lure out the enemy and capture the assassin tonight. (Note: Failure to complete this mission will not deduct points, but did you see the reward?)
