Chapter Twenty-Six: Arrival at the Military Camp

Three days later.

Gu Mu and his assassins arrived at the frontier.

They were stopped when they entered the military camp.

"Who goes there?!" Several soldiers asked warily, their long spears crossed.

Gu Mu glanced around the military camp. The soldiers were all covered in dust and looked exhausted, but they still stood tall and stood in their proper positions, dutifully fulfilling their duties.

It seems that Shen Ci is a good general who led these soldiers very well.

However, the border regions are often plagued by war, and these soldiers often have to go back to the battlefield to fight before their wounds have even healed, which makes them suffer greatly.

What Gu Mu saw were only the soldiers who could fight; there were also many wounded soldiers lying in the wounded soldiers' camp, unable to get out of bed.

Because of the lack of adequate medical care, they had no choice but to endure it on their own.

Those who can't survive will only wait to die.

"A doctor," Gu Mu said with a slight smile, wearing a ghost mask. "Summon your General Shen to see me."

The soldiers guarding the gate who were blocking Gu Mu looked at each other suspiciously: "Do you think you can just see General Shen whenever you want?"

"It's like this, we are the doctors invited by the Princess to treat General Shen." The assassin stepped forward, took out a token from the Princess's pocket, and explained, "The Princess heard that General Shen was seriously injured and was very worried, so she sent us to treat General Shen's injuries."

A soldier took the token, examined it in his hand, and then handed it to another person to confirm, muttering, "It's real."

But seeing the token, they dared not let anyone in.

After all, it was just the princess's token, not His Highness's imperial edict; it could only be used as a token, not as an order.

So one of the soldiers said, "I'll go and inform General Shen."

A short while later, the soldier returned and said respectfully, "General Shen said to let us in."

The conditions in the military camp were very basic, only able to meet the soldiers' basic needs.

However, those who can join the army are all hardworking and resilient, and the most critical issue is the poor medical conditions.

Gu Mu followed the soldier into Shen Ci's tent.

Shen Ci's face was pale, his lips were bloodless, and he was completely devoid of the high spirits he had when he left the capital.

He had been sitting in his seat, looking extremely weak, but he still managed to stand up and greeted them, "Did my sister send you?"

Shen Ci asked with some confusion, "But Doctor, why are you dressed so strangely?"

The black and white ghost mask didn't look like that of a doctor saving lives.

More like the Black and White Impermanence, who bring about death.

“The situation is special. I’ll treat your injuries first, and then I’ll explain later,” Gu Mu said calmly.

He stared at Shen Ci, wondering if this young man was smart enough.

Fortunately, Shen Ci did not disappoint him and recognized his voice immediately.

His expression changed slightly, but he quickly suppressed it so that no one noticed anything amiss.

Then he waved his hand, signaling the others in the tent to leave: "The doctor is treating me, you all go outside and keep watch."

Military orders are absolute, and a soldier's nature is to obey.

As soon as Shen Ci spoke, the soldiers all left the tent in an orderly manner.

Soon, only Gu Mu, the assassin, and Shen Ci remained in the tent.

"Your Highness!" Shen Ci immediately knelt down before Gu Mu, clasping his hands in a fist salute: "I never expected it would be you who came."

"No need for formalities." Gu Mu sat down and gestured for Shen Ci to stand up.

Then, with piercing eyes, he looked at Shen Ci and said, "Let me see your injuries."

Shen Ci paused for a moment, then turned around, took off his clothes, and revealed his back, where large areas of knife wounds were shocking.

If it had gone in just one inch deeper, he probably would have lost his life.

As the weather continued to get warmer, Shen Ci's wound became increasingly infected and festered, showing no signs of improvement.

"The wound needs to be cleaned and bandaged promptly." Gu Mu frowned, not expecting Shen Ci to be so careless in treating the wound. It's no wonder that soldiers had such a high probability of dying from injuries, given the lack of medical knowledge among the ancients.

Shen Ci put on his clothes, clasped his hands in a fist and said, "Thank you for your concern, Your Highness!"

Gu Mu took out a penicillin pill from his inventory, then opened his palm and handed it to Shen Ci: "Taking these pills will help your injuries heal faster."

The system provides an oral penicillin product.

The dosage is one capsule twice a day.

Without hesitation, Shen Ci grabbed the medicine and put it in his mouth.

Meanwhile—

Inside the Prince's Mansion.

The news from the frontier seven days ago finally reached the princess's ears.

"My brother's illness has worsened again." Shen Ling read the note on the carrier pigeon, her hands trembling slightly.

"Your Highness, what should we do? Why don't you go and beg His Highness?" Youyou said, her eyes red.

She felt sorry for her princess.

Her princess was originally a cool and aloof person, but lately she has become increasingly unpredictable.

In the past, when the princess was unhappy, she would show it on her face, just like any other little girl.

After all, she was the daughter of the Prime Minister's family, and therefore had the most right to be willful.

But... her princess's eyes were becoming more and more like a calm, deep spring, unfathomable.

The princess's sadness will never be shown on her face again.

"It's no use." Shen Ling put the note into the brazier and burned it, watching it gradually turn to ashes: "Assigning my brother to the frontier and confining my father, don't you see what His Highness is planning?"

"Does Your Highness intend to bring down the Shen family?" Youyou was also startled: "But you and His Highness are husband and wife!"

"Heh..." Shen Ling chuckled softly, almost inaudibly: "If we were truly husband and wife, why do you think Your Highness never spends the night in my Snowfall Courtyard?"

"Perhaps Your Highness has always had someone else in your heart."

"Once the Shen family falls, His Highness will marry her."

Shen Ling's eyes flickered with the embers, their depths obscuring his gaze.

"Who is it?" A resolute look suddenly appeared in Youyou's eyes: "This servant will kill her for you!"

—Of course, it's the woman who tore her apart.

Shen Ling gazed at the candlelight and smiled, "No need, I'll do it myself."

"What about my brother..."

"My brother is just seriously ill. I will find a way to bring him back later. It's just a pity... it's a pity that my brother, who was so promising at such a young age, may never be able to go to the battlefield again."

Shen Ling sighed softly, but she would protect her brother's life.

Use every means possible.

On the frontier, inside a military tent.

Gu Mu never took off his mask.

Acting cautiously will ultimately prevent you from making a mistake.

Inside the small tent, Gu Mu and Shen Ci had a sincere private talk and decided on their next plan.

After the private meeting ended, Shen Ci nodded solemnly, knelt on the ground again, and clasped his hands together, saying, "Your Majesty, I will certainly not fail your trust!"

"I would die ten thousand times over!" This was the words of a soldier, an absolute loyal subject to the imperial power.

Both being sons of the old emperor, Gu Mu far surpasses the young emperor in terms of political acumen, ability, and combat prowess.

He and the prime minister's family sided with the regent from beginning to end.
