Chapter Forty: First Signs

Gu Lan hesitated for a moment, but ultimately handed over two thousand taels of silver to Qi Yu.

After receiving the money, the man took out another six hundred taels of silver and handed it to Gu Lan. "This is your salary and the salaries of the others who helped. If it's not enough, we'll decide again when my wife wakes up. Half of the salaries for catching crabs have already been paid to the others. For the rest, please list the specific figures first, and we'll check the accounts one by one later."

As Gu Lan received her salary, her eyes became more inquisitive, and she gained a new understanding of Qi Yu. Perhaps this seemingly weak man was not so simple after all.

Qi Yu consciously closed the door and went inside, lying down next to Li Xiaoxiao. If his wife hadn't been so busy and tired, there were some things he shouldn't have said, but now he had to remind her more.

They should understand the principle that the bigger the tree, the more the wind will blow against it.

It wasn't until late afternoon that Li Xiaoxiao slowly woke up, turned over, and opened her eyes. Qi Yu seemed to sense her presence and reached out to embrace her. "Wife, Gu Lan sent over some money at noon. After deducting labor costs, there was a total of over 1,400 taels of silver."

"Half of the wages for crab catching hasn't been paid yet." After saying that, he wrapped his arms around Li Xiaoxiao's waist, half-embracing her, the gentle sounds of a woman and the refreshing fragrance filling the air.

"I'll make it later, my husband, I'm hungry."

Li Xiaoxiao didn't struggle. She mumbled that she was hungry, then turned over and tried to go back to sleep. She was so tired. The wine she had stored in her space was almost gone, and she would have to brew some more in a while.

The man was furious. His little wife only knew how to act cute and had no sense of self-preservation at all. "Li Xiaoxiao, next time you are not allowed to take things out of your space when it is not safe. What will happen if others find out?"

She was completely startled awake in her half-dreaming state, and a murderous aura swept over her as soon as she opened her eyes, but the thought of Qi Yu instantly made her feel a little more relaxed.

"What, my husband, are you going to send me to the yamen? You clearly saw me before, why did you never say anything about it?"

She immediately rolled over and pressed her finger to the man's thin lips, revealing a half-smile in her eyes. Her almond-shaped eyes now carried a seductive aura. Her inner garment was disheveled on her shoulders, and her smooth, black hair fell down, landing on the man's face. The light streaming in from the window shone on the woman's face, making her fair cheeks seem to glow. A delicate and charming aura emanated from her, and the languid and playful tone faded away.

The man awoke from his momentary daze and infatuation, his body burning with heat. But the woman on top of him wouldn't get up, teasing him with an air of oppression.

That despicable woman.

"Li Xiaoxiao, get off me! What are you doing pressing down on your husband like this? You seem to know nothing about the Three Obediences and Four Virtues. Today, I will teach you about them properly. The Three Obediences and Four Virtues refer to the virtues that women should have. The Three Obediences are: before marriage, obey your father; after marriage, obey your husband; and after your husband's death, obey your son. The Four Virtues are: virtue, speech, appearance, and needlework. But you have failed to do any of them."

In his anger, Qi Yu blurted out the Three Obediences and Four Virtues. He shouldn't have said it so directly; he should have guided his wife to read and learn them gradually.

After saying that, he stared straight at the woman, bracing himself for a beating from her unpredictable temper. Although Li Xiaoxiao hadn't hit him for many days, he was afraid he wouldn't be able to withstand the slap after offending her sore spot like this.

After hearing him finish reciting the Three Obediences and Four Virtues, Li Xiaoxiao leaned on the bed with one hand and couldn't help but laugh out loud. "Husband, are you serious? What Three Obediences and Four Virtues? You're killing me with laughter. Since you can recite them, from now on, you will abide by these Three Obediences and Four Virtues. It seems I have failed as a wife. It seems you are just right to be my wife."

"Absurd, ridiculous, utter nonsense! What do you mean, 'I'll be your wife'?" Qi Yu's voice rose unconsciously as he looked at the woman above him who was deliberately teasing him. Anger welled up inside him, and his cheeks flushed slightly with rage.

Realizing he was no match for this woman, Qi Yu clenched his fists and swallowed his anger.

He then gently comforted her, "My wife, don't joke around. I don't mean for you to learn any of the traditional virtues of obedience and submission. I just want to tell you not to be so ostentatious. This world is not as simple as you imagine."

Li Xiaoxiao knew that her little husband was being pushed to the limit, which was not good. She hadn't teased him in a long time. He used to pretend to be aloof, but now he had learned to be submissive. He was really a good prospect.

"What my husband says is absolutely right."

Li Xiaoxiao stopped supporting herself and fell directly onto Qi Yu. Apart from a slight abnormality, she was basically normal.

"My lady, this is 1,400 taels of silver sent by Gu Lan. Please keep it safe."

The silver coin had just been in her hand when it vanished in the blink of an eye. Qi Yu was stunned for a moment, but ultimately said nothing more.

He had heard that the royal priests had a storage bag that could hold about ten items, and he guessed that his wife also had this treasure.

"I'm hungry, my husband."

Qi Yu dared not delay. He propped himself up on his elbows, picked up the half-asleep woman, and dressed and washed her. He always felt a sense of accomplishment after doing these things so often. Only when the little woman lay obediently in his arms did she seem as gentle and tender as a real woman.

There was a small pavilion in the courtyard, surrounded by a few trees and a pond with small fish swimming in it. As soon as the two came out of the room, Steward Hu brought out food and placed it on the table.

"Master Qi, this is the food. Please feed the master carefully, and I will watch over him."

After Manager Hu finished speaking, he sat down and watched. Sure enough, Li Xiaoxiao opened her eyes when she heard about the food and looked at it with bright eyes.

She snuggled against the man and said, "Husband, feed me."

Qi Yu then carefully picked up the chopsticks and began to feed the child one bite at a time. After a while, his aunt and Bai Han came over together.

"Sister Li, what's wrong with her?" Bai Han asked with concern. The aunt smiled and led Bai Han to sit down in the pavilion. "Your sister Li is probably spoiled by Qi Yu. She always wants to be held and fed. What kind of injury could she have? She probably has the strength but won't move on her own."

After saying that, he couldn't help but smile, and Manager Hu, who was standing to the side, couldn't help but smile as well.

Li Xiaoxiao ate while lying quietly and obediently in Qi Yu's arms.

A short while later, just as the two finished eating, Chen Xueqing rushed back with He Chunying, saying, "Master, something terrible has happened! There's a beggar outside this courtyard who insists that you are about to suffer a bloody disaster and that he wants to see you."

A beggar? Or a bloody disaster?

Li Xiaoxiao immediately came to her senses, broke free from Qi Yu's embrace, and walked straight out the door, with Qi Yu quickly following behind.

The two looked and saw that there was indeed an old man standing at the door. He was dressed in rags, even his bowl was broken, and he had several sores on his body, making him look pitiful.

The moment she appeared, the beggar knelt on the ground and said, "The signs of breaking the image, the moment of breaking the image, I have finally waited for this old man."
