"So how are children's early education conducted in our county and the surrounding villages?"
“Some families with better financial conditions will hire students to tutor them; others will have someone in their family who knows a few words to teach them.”
"Then, may I ask what books are generally suitable for children's early education?"
“My lady, that’s a very important question. Generally, children’s first education involves reading the Three Character Classic, the Hundred Family Surnames, and the Thousand Character Classic. These books are very common and can be found in all bookstores.”
After thanking the old man, Su Yun'er strolled around and went to the entrance of the bookstore.
On the way, Su Yun'er pondered the old man's words.
Looking for a mentor?
This is a bit of a dilemma.
The reason for this is ultimately money.
Su Yun'er has saved some money now, but she will need money to build a house at the dock and send her children to the academy in the future. Besides, she can't really spend all her money without leaving a single penny. She still needs to save some money to protect herself.
Su Yun'er was familiar with the three books: the Three Character Classic, the Hundred Family Surnames, and the Thousand Character Classic. She had studied them when she was a child, could recite them, and knew the stories behind them.
In fact, Su Yun'er could easily take charge of the two children's early education, but the original owner of this body had never been to school.
Su Yun'er touched her chin, kept her head down and just kept walking, biting her lower lip, racking her brains for a solution.
Before I knew it, I had arrived at the entrance of Yuanwen Pavilion.
This is a shop of moderate size. Between the rows of bookshelves, there are quite a few people standing and selecting their favorite books. Most of them are young men dressed like scholars.
As soon as Su Yun'er entered the store, she smelled a strong scent of books and ink, which immediately reminded her of her primary and junior high school days.
When Su Yun'er was a child, many of her tests and homework papers were mimeographed by the teachers themselves.
Sometimes, the back of the previous test paper would be stained with the words of the next test paper; and many test papers were not laid out horizontally or vertically, but diagonally; and often the questions from the same test paper were printed on two separate sheets of paper, simply because the two sheets of paper were folded together.
Back then, we had to be very careful whenever we got these test papers, because even dried ink could easily get on our arms and hands. So, to protect our clothes, every child had a pair of sleeves that were easy to wash when they got dirty.
As Su Yun'er recalled these thoughts, a smile crept onto her lips.
"I'm really getting old; I'm starting to miss the old days."
Regaining her composure, Su Yun'er began to search for the three books the old man had mentioned: the Three Character Classic, the Hundred Family Surnames, and the Thousand Character Classic.
A young shop assistant came up to Su Yun'er as soon as she entered the store.
However, seeing that Su Yun'er was deep in thought while looking at a book, he didn't disturb her.
Seeing that she had come to her senses, he stepped forward and greeted her with a smile, "Is this lady looking to buy a book?"
"Yes, I want to make books for my child's early education."
Upon hearing this, the young shop assistant immediately pointed to the bookshelf next to him: "For your enlightenment, madam, you can take a look at these books. They've just arrived, the paper is good, the cutting is fair, and most importantly, the print is clear, with absolutely no misprints."
The young shop assistant took one down and handed it over with both hands.
Su Yun'er took it; it was the "Thousand Character Classic".
Turning to the first page, it reads, "Heaven and earth were dark and yellow, the universe was vast and boundless. The sun and moon waxed and waned, the stars and constellations were arrayed in their places."
I flipped through it casually, and the young man wasn't exaggerating; the book was indeed printed cleanly and neatly, and it was really good.
How much is this book?
"One volume contains 267 articles."
"So expensive?!"
"My lady, you flatter me. Look at the quality of this book; it will last a long time. It's definitely worth the price."
The young shopkeeper was always very nice and didn't discriminate against Su Yun'er because of her village woman attire. He always smiled and patiently answered her questions.
Su Yun'er then asked the shop assistant to bring out the "Hundred Family Surnames" and the "Three Character Classic" to look at. Of the three books, the "Hundred Family Surnames" was of slightly lower quality, so Su Yun'er finally chose the "Three Character Classic" and the "Thousand Character Classic".
I originally planned to buy one copy of each book for each of my two children, but due to the price, I bought one copy of each book instead, so they can share one copy when we get home.
Stepping out of the data, Su Yun'er felt nearly five hundred coins lighter.
And this was before even purchasing writing brushes, ink, paper, and inkstones.
The shop assistant had just asked if she wanted to buy it, but after thinking about it, Su Yun'er decided not to buy it for the time being.
Brushes, ink, paper, and inkstones are consumables. Nowadays, children don't even know how to hold a brush, so using paper and ink to practice calligraphy is a pure waste.
The yard is so big, everyone can just pick up a small twig and write on the ground.
As for the initial enlightenment, Su Yun'er has decided to take care of it herself.
If Old Mrs. Chen had any doubts and asked her why she was literate, she would have a way to deal with it.
After finishing her business, Su Yun'er felt much lighter.
She strolled into Fushou Lane and bought the sugar cakes that Grandma Chen wanted to eat. Although Su Yun'er could make them herself, she did not refuse Grandma Chen's request.
She knew that what Old Mrs. Chen wanted to eat was not the sweet cake, but her longing for her son.
Su Yun'er bought the things that Xiaocao and Xiaoshu wanted, and replenished the things that were missing in the house. On the way, she saw a vendor selling roasted chestnuts and bought a bag.
The hot, roasted chestnuts have a caramel-brown outer shell that has cracked open, revealing the golden-yellow chestnut meat inside.
Press your fingernail around the opening and squeeze gently. The chestnut shell will crack, and the skin between the shell and the chestnut meat will also break apart, allowing you to remove a whole chestnut.
