"How exactly is it prepared and eaten on the spot?" Everyone in the room was very curious.
Sun Wanqing was equally curious.
However, Su Yun'er smiled slightly and said, "That dish cannot be made now. I can only tell you if Miss Wanqing eats a bowl of porridge and half a portion of the dish."
Seeing Su Yun'er keeping her in suspense, Sun Wanqing became even more curious. A smile bloomed on her pale and weak face, and she asked Chunrou and Xia Zhi to feed her.
She was too weak to sit up against the headboard and couldn't eat by herself.
“I love the red rose beauty porridge that Madam Su makes the most. I imagine that Grandmother must have eaten quite a few of her favorite roses to make this porridge.” Sun Wanqing tasted the sweet and smooth rice porridge. “Xia Zhi, is Grandmother still out there? Let’s send her a bowl too. Grandmother works so hard, she needs to be nourished.”
Xia Zhi agreed, and in addition to serving a bowl of porridge, he also added some other food, which he then sent to the old lady who was waiting outside.
The greens are crisp and savory, and after a few chews, you can taste the natural sweetness of the greens. They don't feel greasy at all because of the hot oil, but rather refreshing and have a refreshing and appetizing effect.
The same goes for the sweet and sour radishes. The radishes are a bit dehydrated after pickling, but the pickling time is well controlled so they are not too soft. They are soft yet crunchy. After chewing a few times, Sun Wanqing found some enjoyment in eating. The sweet and sour taste is also a bit appetizing.
"Just tea eggs?" Sun Wanqing asked, looking at the eggs that Chunrou had peeled open.
The solidified egg white surface was marked by cracks and smudges from the soup. When you smelled it closely, it had a strong tea aroma.
Su Yun'er nodded: "I used half a tea cake to make a very fragrant soup. I tasted the egg and it was a bit salty, but you haven't been eating much these past few days and you just sweated a lot, so you need to replenish your salt and sugar. You can eat it without worry. Salt gives you energy."
Sun Wanqing nodded and obediently ate half an egg.
After finishing the meal, Sun Wanqing urged Su Yun'er to make the last dish.
Su Yun'er checked the food on the table and finally nodded: "Okay, I'll make it for you now."
Su Yun'er gestured to a little maid, who immediately ran out and returned a moment later with a tray. As usual, there was another plate on it, so that the contents could not be seen.
After the plate was taken away, everyone craned their necks to see what it was.
"How...how can this meat be raw?!"
"Eating raw meat will give you diarrhea!"
The nannies were worried.
Chunrou frowned, and Xia Zhi asked, "What is my wife trying to do?"
Su Yun'er looked around, her gaze finally settling on Sun Wanqing's face.
The servants around her looked surprised, confused, or displeased, but Sun Wanqing showed nothing but curiosity.
"Does my wife want to cook the meat on this small stove?" Sun Wanqing asked, glancing at the small clay stove on the corner of the table.
“You guessed it already, so it’s not a mystery anymore.” Su Yun’er smiled and used her chopsticks to pick up a slice of red and white meat and placed it on the stone slab on the clay stove. Immediately, the sound of sizzling and grilling filled the room.
The aroma of the oil was immediately released by the hot stone slab, and the people around were relieved: thankfully, the girl wasn't being asked to become a savage and eat raw meat.
After flipping the meat slices a few times, the bright red color faded, and when you picked up a slice, oil droplets would drip from it.
“These are beef ribs,” Su Yun’er said while frying the meat slices. “They are the freshest beef ribs, cut from the cow less than two hours ago. The freshest ingredients often only need the simplest cooking methods.”
Picking up a slice of fried meat, shaking off the oil droplets, Su Yun'er dipped a corner of the meat slice in a small dish, added some white powder, and then brought it to Sun Wanqing's lips.
Sun Wanqing ate it, and as she chewed, the meat slices squeezed and rubbed against her teeth, which actually released a lot of broth. It was oily and fragrant, and even had a hint of milky aroma. The white powder was salt, a very small amount, but enough to bring out the deliciousness of the meat.
“This is the first time I’ve ever seen a meal like this,” Sun Wanqing said.
She felt much stronger now, and spoke much more fluently than when she first woke up.
"This powder is sea salt. After grinding it into a fine powder, you can use it to dip the meat. You only need a very small amount, otherwise it will be too salty. I have already told the head chef of the Sun family how to make it. If you want to eat it in the future, just ask the head chef to make it for you."
Sun Wanqing watched Su Yun'er carefully flipping the meat slices back and forth, a smile appearing on her lips.
"What are you laughing at?" Su Yun'er laughed along when she felt her gaze fixed on her.
"Everyone says that you need to nourish yourself after recovering from a serious illness. I thought you would make some complicated and delicious dishes, but it turned out to be just some plain porridge and side dishes. The most oily thing was just a few slices of meat, which couldn't even be fried or braised. It was made in such a simple way. As expected, Madam Su always does things differently from others."
Su Yun'er laughed twice after hearing this.
"Because you just woke up from a serious illness, we can't give you anything too greasy right away. Your stomach has been empty for a few days, so you need to warm it up with hot soup first, and then eat some soft and easy-to-digest porridge. Vegetables, radishes, and eggs are simple, but they can provide the nutrition you need right now and also stimulate your appetite. And these few slices of meat are to help you remember the taste of normal meals."
"You're so observant." Sun Wanqing pointed to the sesame flatbread. "Did you make this yourself, my lady?"
An old maid immediately nodded: "We watched Madam Su make it. She is skillful and has excellent cooking skills. She can make everything, which we old servants admire."
