During the Spring Festival, the villagers do nothing but visit each other and chat. Among all the conversations, the Chen family is the one they talk about the most.
"No family had a better year than the Chen family."
"The Chen family not only had a good year during the New Year, but their life gradually improved after Shanhe's wife was hit on the head by her brother. I live two or three houses away from theirs, and I can still smell the stewed meat they make all the time."
"Now they've made friends with a rich family, and they received such a huge truckload of stuff for the New Year. Do you think their family of four can finish it all? I hope it doesn't spoil."
"If she can't finish it, why don't you eat it for her? Hahaha!"
"Do you think I don't want to? Chicken, duck, fish, and meat, and my child said there are also many strange things whose names I can't come up with, things I've never even seen before. I really envy her luck. How did she, Su Yun'er, end up knowing such a rich family?"
A group of people were chatting and eating sunflower seeds when someone overheard them and came over: "You guys don't know, do you? That young widow seems to be able to read now."
"Bullshit! Her family treated her so badly, how could they possibly pay for her education?!"
"I know all of that, but she really can read. I passed by her house the other day and heard her calling the little trees and grass to read. She was saying something like 'metal, wood, earth' or something like that." The man racked his brains for a long time but couldn't recall the exact words Su Yun'er had taught him.
Everyone found it hard to believe, but the man spoke with great detail and said that he had heard it twice more and that it really was Su Yun'er telling the children to read.
Everyone was amazed.
"Could this be a case of 'a great calamity brings great fortune'? She was beaten unconscious by her brother from her maternal family, but after surviving, she was able to earn money, understand human relationships, and even learn to read?"
They gathered together and discussed it, but couldn't come to a conclusion.
Suddenly someone said, "Is she doing business with He Liu now?"
"I heard about it. They said Aunt Song is going to come along after the New Year too."
"Su Yun'er is so amazing now... could she help us out? We're all from the same village, aren't we..."
Those around them echoed his sentiments.
If we could do business together, our family would have an extra source of income.
***
During the Spring Festival, Su Yun'er fully entered vacation mode. She ate after waking up, and when she was tired, she would lie down. While lying down, she would take the opportunity to go to her space to carry out a series of tasks.
But on the morning of the second day of the Lunar New Year, the number of people visiting each other's homes to exchange New Year's greetings suddenly increased.
After exchanging New Year's greetings, everyone would casually mention, intentionally or unintentionally, that they wanted Su Yun'er to help them out when she was setting up her stall.
This is true for one or two people, and it's true for three, four, and five people.
In just half an hour, Su Yun'er's house was filled with villagers who came to pay New Year's visits and ask for help.
While boiling water to make tea, Old Mrs. Chen pulled Su Yun'er aside.
"Little Tree's mother, these people don't seem to be here to wish you a Happy New Year. They seem more like they want to ask you for help."
"Mom, you figured it out too? What they meant was that they wanted me to help them set up a stall and make money."
"It's good to have help, but isn't this too much?" Old Mrs. Chen looked troubled.
“My tofu pudding stall only makes a few dollars a day. Even with so many people helping, the daily earnings aren’t enough to cover their wages,” Su Yun’er said, waving her hands repeatedly.
"What should we do?" Old Mrs. Chen was at a loss. They were all neighbors, and if she refused, she didn't want to upset them or cause them to become enemies.
“Let me talk to them,” Su Yun’er said, patting Old Mrs. Chen’s hand to comfort her.
Back inside, seeing the room full of aunts and uncles sitting on and around the kang (heated brick bed), Su Yun'er brought out some roasted melon seeds and peanuts she had made, distributing them to everyone as she went. She said, "Aunties, I guessed why you came today. You've come to see me because you trust and approve of me, and I'm very grateful; but I really don't deserve any 'helping.' My little stall is just a small business, barely enough to support my family for now. The dock is right there; I don't need anyone's approval to set up a stall there. If anyone is interested, feel free to go. We're all from the same village, so we can look out for each other. I'm young and don't have much ability, but I'll definitely help if I can. Who knows, I might need your help in the future."
Su Yun'er's words were very direct and straightforward, without any beating around the bush. Although everyone felt disappointed, they knew that Su Yun'er was telling the truth.
There are no restrictions on going to the dock; anyone can go. The reason they came looking for us despite knowing this is that they wanted to take a shortcut. Su Yun'er's business is already on track, and if they join, they can start making money right away.
But now that Su Yun'er has said such things, they can't really blame her.
After all, what they said was the truth.
Su Yun'er is currently the highest earner in the village, and they don't want to offend her.
So, everyone sat at Su Yun'er's house for a while, had some snacks and tea, and then left.
The New Year days returned to peace, and Su Yun'er finally completed all her tasks on the fourth day of the Lunar New Year, successfully upgrading her space to a higher level and obtaining the reward package she wanted.
After receiving the gift package, Su Yun'er immediately rubbed her hands together, planning to make a new dessert—taro glutinous rice balls—to eat.
Su Yun'er is a typical taro-headed person.
In her past life, she would always buy taro-related products to try whenever they were available in dessert and beverage shops.
