When the person ran closer, Su Yun'er and the others recognized him as Song Shanqiang, the second son of Aunt Song.
He was soaked to the bone, but he didn't care about anything else. He wiped the rain off his face and said anxiously, "Shanhe's wife, come with me quickly!"
Su Yun'er's bad premonition reached its peak in an instant, and she asked anxiously, "Has something happened to my family?"
"Something's happened! Hey, come back with me right now and we'll talk. Don't waste any time, let's go!"
Lin Moniang immediately pulled an umbrella from behind the counter and stuffed it into Su Yun'er's hand: "Yun'er, here!"
Su Yun'er didn't waste any more words. She took the umbrella and ran back with Song Shanqiang. The shop was being looked after by He Liu and Lin Moniang, so she didn't need to worry about it too much.
The rain was still heavy, and Su Yun'er took small steps, barely keeping up with Song Shanqiang.
Song Shanqiang had already told Su Yun'er what had happened at home, but when Su Yun'er actually stood at the door, she was still speechless.
Amidst the raging wind and rain, a large tree beside the Chen family's courtyard was blown down, its roots even uprooted. The massive canopy and thick trunk crashed squarely into the Chen family's yard.
The east wall of the courtyard collapsed completely, the main house was smashed to pieces, and a large hole was pushed into the wall on the west side where the door was located. The only things that were intact were the kitchen and the chicken coop.
Fortunately, Grandma Chen was busy making scallion pancakes with the grass, so when the accident happened, all four children and the elderly woman were in the kitchen and thus escaped unharmed.
When Su Yun'er returned, a crowd had already gathered inside and outside the Chen family home. Aunt Song was in the kitchen, keeping Old Lady Chen company.
She wasn't feeling well today, and the children stopped her from setting up her stall.
"Your mother was terrified; her hands and feet were ice-cold, and she was trembling," Aunt Song said to Su Yun'er when she returned.
Su Yun'er thanked Aunt Song and quickly walked over to Old Lady Chen, squatted down, and looked at Old Lady Chen: "Mother."
Old Mrs. Chen's face was pale, her eyes were unfocused and she looked exhausted, indicating that she had been quite frightened.
Little Grass was also frightened and cried, but she refused to leave and insisted on staying with her grandmother: "I'm worried that Grandma will be scared."
The other three boys were also terrified.
Su Yun'er comforted each of them, and the elderly and four children felt a little better.
Su Yun'er had some questions for Old Lady Chen, but there were people both inside and outside the house, so it wasn't convenient. She said to Aunt Song, "Aunt Song, my house is uninhabitable like this. The five of them need to drink some hot water and rest for a while. Can they come to your house first?"
"Of course! I would have taken you to my house even if you hadn't asked. There's nowhere to sit in this kitchen, so your old lady needs to take some calming medicine and get a good night's sleep."
As she spoke, Aunt Song stepped out to borrow a raincoat from her neighbors.
The rain was too heavy, so there weren't many people watching the commotion to begin with. Then Aunt Song called everyone away, leaving only a few children, Old Lady Chen, and Su Yun'er inside.
Su Yun'er had Xiao Shu lead the children to continue making scallion pancakes to distract them, while Su Yun'er pulled Old Lady Chen aside and asked in a low voice, "Mother, the house collapsed, did you put away any valuables in your house?"
Old Mrs. Chen's eyes were red, and she wiped her eyes and nose: "I put it away. The tree damaged the house, so I rushed to find it. It was sitting under my bottom."
Upon hearing this, Su Yun'er looked down and, sure enough, there was a small wooden box under the wooden bench that Old Mrs. Chen had made. The light was already poor on a rainy day, and with Old Mrs. Chen's dress covering it, it was easy to miss if you didn't look closely.
Seeing this, Su Yun'er was relieved. On the one hand, she was no longer worried about losing her belongings, and on the other hand, the fact that Old Lady Chen remembered to put away her valuables first showed that she hadn't been frightened into anything.
Afterwards, Su Yun'er went to her room, where she still had quite a few silver and copper coins stored. The wall around the door had been pushed open by the tree canopy, creating a large hole. Su Yun'er stepped over the branches and found that the damage inside the room wasn't too severe. She quickly found the valuables, thought for a moment, then wrapped up some clothes and bedding and carried them to the kitchen.
After Su Yun'er finished, Aunt Song returned with the borrowed raincoat and umbrella.
"Yun'er, hurry, while the rain isn't as heavy as before, come with me to my house!"
After putting raincoats or holding umbrellas over Grandma Chen and the children, the group went to the Song family's house.
Incidentally, they also brought along that magnificent, fat chicken.
The sapling stroked its fur: "The house collapsed with such a loud noise, I wonder if it scared it."
"This child is so kind-hearted, even worried about the chicken," Aunt Song said, shaking her head with admiration.
Then Xiaoshu added, "Don't be so scared that you can't lay eggs!"
"...The child is quite good at managing money."
***
In the Song family, Aunt Song slept in the main room by herself, while her eldest son and his wife, and her second son and his wife, each slept in a separate room. Aunt Song brought Old Mrs. Chen and the children back and called over her two daughters-in-law: "Something happened to Shanhe's family, so they need to stay at our house for a few days. For the next few days, the three of us will sleep in the eldest son's room, the three men in the family will sleep in the second son's room, and the Chen family of four will sleep in my room."
"Aunt Song, isn't this inappropriate?" Su Yun'er quickly tried to stop her.
