Chapter 29 What did they buy this time?

She left the bustling market and wandered into a side market, where there were fewer vendors and therefore fewer people.

There's a fabric shop here; Su Yun'er had checked out their prices before.

As the weather gets colder and her family's clothes get old, she plans to make a new set of clothes for each family member and a new quilt for everyone, so they can welcome the New Year warmly and comfortably.

So she came to inquire about the price in advance. The money she earned from selling candied hawthorns and candied berries today, along with what she had saved before, was just enough to buy fabric and cotton.

The cloth and cotton were bulky and heavy, and Su Yun'er couldn't carry them all by herself, so she hired a donkey cart to take her and the items home.

Little Tree and Little Grass were playing with other children on the village road when they heard a child shout, "Little Tree, your mother is coming back in the car!"

The two children looked over at the sound and, sure enough, it was Su Yun'er, waving at them.

They hurriedly ran towards the donkey cart. Su Yun'er asked the driver to stop the cart, and then carried the two children onto it. The family of three went home together.

"Mom bought some cloth! This cloth is so beautiful." Little Grass stroked the cloth, her eyes filled with undisguised delight.

"Mom, what are these two big packages?" Xiaoshu asked, pointing to two large packages wrapped in cloth. He poked them and found them very soft and fluffy.

Before we knew it, we had reached the door.

"We'll talk about it when we get home. Come on, you two help me carry this cotton. It's not heavy, it looks big, but it's easy to carry." Su Yun'er paid for the donkey cart and called on the two children to help her carry things home.

Old Mrs. Chen was sweeping the yard when she heard a noise and approached to see her daughter-in-law carrying two children and a pile of things into the yard.

"What did you buy this time?" Old Mrs. Chen was quite surprised.

Ever since Su Yun'er was injured by her brothers, she has brought back different things every time she goes out, but Old Mrs. Chen is still not used to it.

I wonder how much money all these bags and packages will cost today.

"Mother, the sweets made from red jujubes sold very well today. With the money I earned, I bought fabric and cotton. This winter, we will each make a new set of clothes and a new quilt for each of us."

The little trees and grass were so happy to hear about the new clothes and new blankets that they almost jumped for joy.

The two of them shouted and laughed as they circled around Su Yun'er.

Grandma Chen was pulled into the house by Su Yun'er. Looking at the brand-new fabric and the clean, soft cotton, Grandma Chen was also very pleased.

"Mom, look, this fabric is for you. It has red flowers on a black background, and green leaves to set it off. Isn't it beautiful?"

"This must be very expensive. Such a beautiful pattern, my goodness, only wealthy old ladies in the city wear this kind of thing." Old Mrs. Chen wanted to touch it, but she was afraid that her dirty hands would soil the fabric, and she was also afraid that the calluses on her hands would damage the fabric.

"It's not expensive at all. I went at the right time; the owner was having a sale. Besides, I have to buy things for my mother, no matter how expensive they are." Su Yun'er often used this phrase when buying things for her parents back in modern times.

Parents are never unhappy when they receive gifts from their children, but they are also afraid that their children will spend too much money.

Upon hearing this, the worry in Old Mrs. Chen's smile faded considerably: "Is it really such good luck?"

"Of course, Grandma is a blessed grandma!" Little Grass said sweetly, snuggling into Grandma Chen's arms to coax her into being happy.

The sapling and the grass were given the same patterned fabric, with pale red on a moon-white background that gradually turned into white plum blossoms, which they both liked very much.

As for what she bought for herself, Su Yun'er chose a piece with a pale yellow background and red flower patterns, which would look great as a dress.

The family used the same fabric for the quilts, and Su Yun'er also bought a sufficient amount of cotton thread.

"Mother, I'm afraid you'll have to trouble you with these clothes and blankets," Su Yun'er said.

"What are you saying? We're family, what's there to complain about? Isn't this what we should do?" Old Mrs. Chen waved her hand, signaling Su Yun'er not to be so polite.

The relationship between the mother-in-law and daughter-in-law has indeed become much closer.

While the three generations of the family discussed the new clothes and blankets, Su Yun'er went to the kitchen to prepare lunch.

She first entered the space and saw that the scallion and garlic seeds she had left over in the morning were ready to be harvested. After harvesting them, she habitually visited her friend's house and was surprised to find some corn there.

Cucumbers, tomatoes, and corn are all rare foods in this era. They have been introduced and cultivated, but the cultivation techniques are not yet up to par, so the yields are low.

Su Yun'er left the space and began preparing to cook.

She selected a few tomatoes, some green vegetables, and then took out a small bag of flour from her spatial storage.

I've been eating brown rice and roasted sweet potatoes for several days in a row, so I wanted to try something different today.

Make some dumpling soup.

First, mix a small amount of water with flour and stir with chopsticks to form a bowl of small dough balls. Then, heat oil in a pan and sauté crushed garlic until fragrant. Once you smell the aroma, add diced tomatoes to the pan and stir-fry until they release their juices. Then, add water and bring to a boil. After the red tomato soup is bubbling, gently scatter the dough balls into the pot. Once all the dough balls are in the pot, slowly pour in beaten egg liquid. The hot soup will immediately solidify the egg liquid into fine egg flowers. At this point, add chopped greens and seasonings, and cook until done.

Dumpling soup was one of Su Yun'er's favorite foods in her previous life. When she was sick with a fever and had no appetite, she could always be won over by a bowl of dumpling soup.

The fresh aroma and sweet and sour taste of tomatoes and greens can whet her appetite when she is sick, and although the dumplings are soft, they allow her to enjoy the pleasure of chewing them slowly.

In particular, dough dumplings are easy to digest and won't put too much burden on the stomach and intestines when you're sick.

Dumpling soup is both a dish and a meal, and Su Yun'er cut some pickled vegetable shreds as a side dish.

This was the first time the Chen family had ever eaten dumpling soup prepared this way, but the salty and sour taste won everyone over.

Xiaoshu even said he wanted to eat dumpling soup every day from now on.

"Okay, but little trees and grasses have to help Mom make candied hawthorns and candied berries." Su Yun'er took the opportunity to make a request for housework.

Okay~

While the children were clearing away the dishes, Su Yun'er took out the scallion and garlic seeds that she had prepared in advance.

"Mom, these are the scallion and garlic seeds I bought. I'm thinking of planting them in the plot of land in the yard next spring when it gets warmer."

"Great, I agree." Old Mrs. Chen smiled kindly.

“I see we have some flower pots and broken basins in our backyard. We can use them to plant some things first, and then we can keep them indoors so they won’t be cold.”

"That's fine. If we grow it ourselves, we won't have to spend money to buy it." Old Mrs. Chen nodded repeatedly.

“That’s what I mean too, we should save money wherever we can,” Su Yun’er said, echoing Old Mrs. Chen’s words.

Having her own space gives her confidence in making money, but knowing how to spend it wisely is the key. "Knowing how to spend" doesn't mean spending recklessly, but rather planning how to spend it.
