He Liu frowned in disgust: "What did you bring, older sister?"
“It’s chicken giblets!” Su Yun’er recognized it at a glance.
"It has to be you," Aunt Song said with a smile, pushing the item towards me. "Didn't you say last time that pig offal and chicken offal can be used in cooking? I happened to go to town to buy groceries today and saw that the chicken seller was going to throw them away, so I got some. See, can we use them?"
"It's usable. It's so fresh; you can tell it was just gutted after the chicken was slaughtered."
Although Su Yun'er had an agreement with the butcher to pick up chicken at a fixed time, she had already asked him for pig offal. The amount of offal from one pig was quite large, and Su Yun'er's family couldn't possibly consume that much offal. So she didn't ask for any more chicken giblets, since offal is high in cholesterol and not suitable for eating too much.
However, since it was Aunt Song who kindly brought it today, Su Yun'er would not refuse.
Before the guests arrived, Su Yun'er had Aunt Song and He Liu chat for a while, and then she found a basin to clean the chicken giblets, preparing to stir-fry them later as part of the "staff meal".
Cleaning chicken giblets is no different from cleaning pig offal. Use plenty of water and flour, changing the water repeatedly to wash them clean. After cutting them, marinate them with cooking wine, ginger, etc. to remove the fishy smell. When the oil in the pot is hot, add a lot of chili peppers, ginger, star anise, and other seasonings to remove the fishy smell and enhance the aroma. After they become fragrant, add the chicken giblets and stir-fry until cooked.
Stir-fried chicken giblets are incredibly spicy, savory, crisp, and tender—perfect with rice.
Aunt Song and He Liu couldn't eat spicy food, but after eating Su Yun'er's cooking a few times, they gradually accepted eating spicy food.
With this spicy stir-fried chicken giblets, the three of them managed to eat a whole bowl of rice, until their bellies were round and full.
"Haha, tell me, you came out to do business, but before you even opened a shop, you've already stuffed yourself." He Liu laughed and pointed at Aunt Song and Su Yun'er.
"There's nothing we can do about it, since Shanhe's wife cooks so well."
Fortunately, Su Yun'er had some dried hawthorn slices with her, and brewed a pot of strong hawthorn tea to help the three of them digest their food and relieve the greasiness.
The dock was reopened for work, and the small tofu stall was bustling with customers at noon. Aunt Song stayed behind to help the two of them.
After they finished their work, the three of them sat down again, exhausted, and brewed another pot of hawthorn tea for them to drink and chat.
"Your business is really doing quite well. Shanhe's wife is really capable. In such a short time, she has turned a small stall into a thriving business."
"Aunt Song, I remember your fried dough sticks were especially delicious," Su Yun'er suddenly remembered.
A couple of days ago, Aunt Song's family bought New Year's goods and made some fried dough cakes, and also shared some with Su Yun'er's family.
"Not only that, Aunt Song can cook many other delicious things too," He Liu said, taking a sip of tea.
“Auntie, you could also set up a small stall, selling fried dough sticks or stuffed pancakes, it’s a way to make a living either way,” Su Yun’er suggested.
"Me? Can I do it?" Aunt Song wasn't sure, but she was somewhat tempted.
“Why not? The old lady’s pancake stall is right next to us. Right now, our stall only offers some white rice or noodles, but not everyone likes to eat those two things. And even if they do like them, they can’t stand eating the same two things every day. After a while, they will want to change their taste.”
Su Yun'er continued, "The pancakes that the old lady sells, and the tofu pudding and peppered pork tripe and chicken soup that we sell, can also be sold together. We can do business together."
How exactly will it be sold as a package deal?
"It's like this: if you buy a bowl of tofu pudding and a pancake together, you can get a discount of one or two coins. No matter which of our shops you buy from, it's the same price."
"This method is good. This combination provides both food and drink, and many people like to eat like this."
The three of them got more and more excited as they talked, wishing they could conjure up a food cart right away so that Aunt Song could start making pancakes immediately.
"But the pancake stall won't be up and running until after the New Year." Aunt Song cleared her throat, trying to control her excitement.
“That would be perfect,” Su Yun’er said. “I was just planning to convert this land into a shop.”
"Why? Isn't this curtain nice?" Aunt Song asked.
"This tent is nice, but it's very difficult to disassemble and move. Plus, with the food we bring every day, we're almost too tired to push it anymore. Also, the space behind the food cart is too small, making it inconvenient to do anything. There are other reasons as well..."
Su Yun'er analyzed all the considerations with Aunt Song one by one.
“I support building the house. All the men in our village, young and old, can do this kind of work. If we call on some helpers, the house will be finished soon.”
As they talked, Aunt Song offered to take on the task of finding people to build the house: "Leave it all to me. After the New Year, the house will be built in ten days to half a month."
As He Liu listened to their conversation, his gaze was suddenly drawn to a small object.
The dark little shadow crouched low and approached quietly.
After making eye contact with He Liu, Gai Xue's eyes widened in surprise.
"Hey, where did this kitten come from?" He Liu exclaimed in surprise.
Upon seeing this, Su Yun'er reached out and, taking advantage of Gai Xue's momentary lapse in attention, pulled her directly into her arms.
"Little Gai Xue, what brings you here?" Su Yun'er scratched the back of Gai Xue's head, and Gai Xue stretched her neck comfortably, squinting her eyes to enjoy it.
Su Yun'er told the other two about the cat's origin and that she was currently keeping it at home.
"I can't believe he actually ran away, and he even came all the way here. The little trees and grass must be really worried about him."
