"Oh, Yun'er, come and take a look too. There's nothing to do right now anyway." He Liu snatched the cloth from Su Yun'er's hand and pulled her arm to come over.
Through the heavy snow, Su Yun'er saw that the group had already disembarked, and there were carriages and servants waiting on the shore.
"They really are a wealthy family." He Liu's eyes were full of envy.
The same was true at the dock; many people turned to look at the girl.
"Let's work hard, and when we make a lot of money, we'll be a wealthy family too." Su Yun'er wasn't envious of anything; she just glanced at it a few times with little interest before turning around to tend to her stove.
Before you start stewing the braised chicken, you should also check if the tofu is pressed properly.
Over at the dock.
Beneath the veil, Sun Wanqing's face was somewhat pale.
The maid Chunrou held an umbrella for her and said softly, "Miss, you'll feel better once you get off the boat. We'll have the doctor prescribe some medicine to relieve seasickness. Drink it and get a good night's sleep."
"Chunrou, I still feel nauseous and don't want to eat anything." Sun Wanqing shook her head.
The master and servant spoke in hushed tones, so that no one around could hear them.
After disembarking from the boat, Sun Wanqing breathed a barely audible sigh of relief as her legs finally touched solid ground.
An elderly man with a beard, holding an umbrella, came to greet us.
"Young lady, you must be tired from your long journey." The man bowed to Sun Wanqing.
"Butler Sun, it's snowing so heavily, please wait here for me."
“You’re too kind, young lady. It’s my duty. Master is still on official business, and the old lady is already waiting for you at home. The carriage is over here, and there are things to keep you warm inside. You’ll feel warm as soon as you get in.”
"Thank you for your help, Steward Sun."
Once inside the carriage, the maid Xia Zhi removed Sun Wan's veil.
"It's only been a short while, and so much snow has already fallen." Xia Zhi said, sticking his veiled hat out the window to shake off the snow.
"Having lived in Haizhou for several years, I had forgotten that it snows this heavily in Qingshui County in winter," Sun Wanqing remarked. Chunrou and Xiazhi echoed the sentiment.
"I remember there used to be a lot of shops here at the dock, but when I came today, they were all gone. Only snow remained, it was so desolate."
The carriage started moving, and Sun Wanqing lifted the curtain to look at the scenery outside.
"Girl, if you're not feeling well, you shouldn't be exposed to the wind. You've been so seasick these past few days, you can't eat anything. You look like you've lost weight."
Sun Wanqing ignored the maids' advice and simply stared quietly out the window.
"Hey? Can you smell something fragrant?"
Sun Wanqing suddenly asked.
"Fragrance?" Chunrou smiled. "The young lady used the finest sandalwood to scent her clothes, of course they smell good!"
"Miss, you weren't talking about sandalwood for scenting clothes, you were talking about the smell of food." Xia Zhi also smelled it and came closer to the window to look.
Sure enough, the carriage passed a dark blue tent. White mist kept drifting out from the tent's curtain, carrying the aroma of stewed meat and a faint, indescribable fragrance.
It smelled different from anything I'd ever smelled before, and I couldn't quite put my finger on what made it taste so good.
"Gurgle..."
Xia Zhi's stomach growled.
“?” Sun Wanqing and Chunrou were momentarily stunned.
When the second rumbling sound came, Xia Zhi hugged her stomach shyly, blushing amidst the laughter of Sun Wanqing and Chunrou.
The carriage did not stop when it passed Su Yun'er's tent, and continued through wind and snow until it arrived at the residence of Sun Chengye, the prefect of Qingshui County.
Servants were already waiting at the main gate. As soon as they saw the Sun family's carriage return, they immediately greeted Sun Wanqing and led her into the mansion according to custom.
Upon entering the mansion, Sun Wanqing went to her grandmother, Madam Huo. Although Madam Huo missed her granddaughter, seeing her exhausted face and hearing from the servants that Sun Wanqing had been seasick, she couldn't bear to see her suffer and sent her back to her room to rest.
Sun Wanqing returned to her room, where various teas, snacks, and fruits had already been prepared for her.
But she only glanced at it before frowning.
I was so seasick that I felt nauseous and couldn't eat anything.
"Don't even mention the young lady, I feel like I can't eat these either," Xia Zhi said as she picked up a pastry, took a bite, and ate.
"How rude of you! The young lady hasn't even started eating yet, and you're already eating," Chunrou scolded her.
"It's okay, there's no one else here anyway, and besides, I don't have an appetite." Sun Wanqing shook her head and rubbed her right temple.
"By the way, the aroma I smelled at the dock today was quite tempting," Xia Zhi said, picking out another pastry.
"Yes, Xia Zhi is right." Thinking of that fragrance, Sun Wanqing didn't feel so disgusted anymore.
Upon hearing Sun Wanqing's words, Chunrou quickly called for someone to go to the tent at the dock to see what kind of food was being sold and to bring some back.
Tofu pudding stall at the dock.
After finishing their work, the laborers gradually came to the tofu stall to eat.
Su Yun'er's hands flew up and down, ladling out bowls of tofu pudding one by one, then handing them to He Liu to add seasonings, and occasionally walking away to clear the table of dishes.
At this busiest time, several new faces arrived at the tent entrance.
"May I ask, which one of you is the stall owner?"
Looking into the tent from the entrance, it was crowded with people, all of whom were dockworkers. Visitors couldn't see anything inside.
The laborers all had loud, booming voices, so the visitor's questions couldn't get through at all.
The old woman gestured to the people behind her, and a young man dressed as a servant stepped forward and called out loudly into the tent, "May I ask who the stall owner is?"
The sound had barely reached inside when everyone in the queue looked outside.
The old woman then politely asked, "May I ask, which one of you is the stall owner?"
Hearing the question, Su Yun'er stepped forward: "That's me. Is there anything I can help you with?"
As Su Yun'er walked to the door, she felt that the old woman looked somewhat familiar.
After racking my brains, I suddenly remembered when I saw the maidservant next to the old woman.
Oh right, isn't this the old lady who bought all my vegetables on my first day selling them at my stall?
"Greetings, Granny. Is there anything I can help you with?" Su Yun'er greeted her warmly.
