Su Yun'er smiled but didn't say anything.
Old Mrs. Chen's attitude towards raising cats and dogs is different from Su Yun'er's. Ordinary people like Old Mrs. Chen like to keep dogs more as guard dogs, while Su Yun'er still has the same attitude towards keeping pets as before, so naturally their ideas are different.
Different ideas only lead to conflict, so Su Yun'er remained silent and just smiled when Old Mrs. Chen talked about herself.
There's no need to argue with Old Lady Chen about these things.
Since she earned the money herself, she could give Gai Xue meat whenever she wanted, and Old Lady Chen couldn't stop her.
However, there was one thing that required Grandma Chen's help: roasting melon seeds.
Grandma Chen was an excellent roaster of melon seeds. With a large spatula, she scrambled the seeds in the pan, and the seeds fell back into the pan like a waterfall, only to be scooped up again.
Moreover, every single sunflower seed can ripen at the same time, so some won't burn while others remain raw.
The sunflower seeds are roasted in batches, and the best sunflower seeds are spread out in a bamboo mat to cool.
Su Yun'er grabbed a small handful and chatted casually with Grandma Chen while eating sunflower seeds.
Although fried peanuts are called fried, they don't actually require a lot of oil.
The peanuts will be ready in a few minutes. After removing the peanuts, you can directly pour oil into the pan and stir-fry the chicken pieces.
She poured water over the chicken and some dried vegetables to stew. Above the water, Su Yun'er set up a small wooden rack and placed two bowls to steam rice.
Suddenly, the little grass ran in, clung to the stove, and quickly sniffed the aroma from the pot.
"Mom, I want to eat noodles with meat broth."
"Want some noodles with meat broth?" Su Yun'er glanced at the storage shelf in the kitchen, where there was still a small half-bag of flour. "Okay, I'll make some more hand-pulled noodles."
The little grass cheered.
Although the little trees and grasses are twins, they have different tastes.
The sapling likes rice, and the grass likes noodles.
The meal was ready quickly.
From the surrounding farmhouses came shouts of "Dinner's ready!"
Su Yun'er stir-fried a spicy cabbage dish, and the meat dish was stewed chicken with dried vegetables. There were two staple foods: rice and hand-pulled noodles.
Su Yun'er had secretly replaced the rice with high-quality rice from her space. After steaming, the rice was as white as jade, with steam rising slowly and the aroma of rice filling the air.
As the meal was being served, Grandma Chen was still carefully mending Xiaocao's clothes.
Xiao Cao squatted down attentively, carefully tearing chicken breast into strips for Gai Xue. She shredded the boiled chicken breast into thicker strips, then mixed it with the water used to boil the meat. Gai Xue could eat half of it in one go.
Xiao Shu brought over a pair of chopsticks and a spoon. As soon as he entered the room, he saw Gai Xue anxiously circling around the grass, making purring sounds and occasionally meowing.
It was as if it was saying, "The cat is so hungry, is the food ready yet? If you don't feed the cat soon, it will get angry."
Seeing that Su Yun'er wasn't there and that Old Mrs. Chen was focused on mending clothes, Xiao Shu quickly reached into the bowl and scooped out two thick, hand-pulled noodles. Luckily, Su Yun'er hadn't put too much broth in the bowl because she was making mixed noodles, otherwise Xiao Shu's fingers would have been burned red.
"Gai Xue, Gai Xue," Xiao Shu called out to Gai Xue in a low voice. Gai Xue turned her head, and Xiao Shu pointed to the noodles in her hand.
Gai Xue immediately understood, ran over, smelled the noodles, and then started eating.
This wasn't the first time Gai Xue had eaten noodles. Xiao Shu and Xiao Cao had secretly fed her noodles before, but Su Yun'er found out and scolded her.
It's not that Su Yun'er is stingy, but rather that not all cats can eat too much starch. Some cats might have gluten allergies or stomach upsets after eating it.
Fortunately, Gai Xue was alright. Su Yun'er thought that perhaps because they had been wandering for many years, these ancient stray cats had much stronger digestive systems than urban pet cats.
Gai Xue finished her noodles before Su Yun'er entered the house. Xiao Shu and Xiao Cao watched her eat chicken breast with smiles, feeling the joy of a loving mother.
When the whole family sat down to eat, Grandma Chen finally finished her chores.
She shook out the mended clothes, smoothing them out so the other three could see.
"Grandma is so skillful, I can't even tell where it's broken," Xiaocao clapped her hands and laughed.
"Come here, little tree, let Grandma compare. I feel like you've grown taller!"
This garment was only made about a month ago, but when Grandma Chen compared it to her own shoulders just now, she felt that the width of the shoulders had decreased.
The little tree stood up straight obediently, and Grandma Chen spread the clothes on his back to compare them.
"It really has shrunk so much!" Grandma Chen exclaimed in surprise.
"Xiaoshu, don't you feel that these clothes are too tight?" Su Yun'er asked in surprise.
The children are growing up so fast!
"A little, but I thought it was because I was wearing other clothes underneath," Xiaoshu said, scratching his head.
The little grass observed the sapling and nodded in agreement: "Brother has gotten... fatter?"
“He’s gotten stronger,” Su Yun’er said.
The previously malnourished, thin, and dark-skinned little guy has finally started to grow stronger.
"Mother, do we still have any fabric at home?" Su Yun'er asked.
If not, I'll go to town this afternoon and buy some more fabric of the same pattern to alter Xiaoshu's clothes to be a bit bigger.
"There should still be some. I'll look for them after we finish eating."
Grandma Chen put away her sewing basket and began to eat.
As she picked up her chopsticks, she remarked, "The children are going to be a year older; time really flies."
Su Yun'er keenly grasped the phrase "another year older".
"Is it time for the little trees and grass to have a birthday?"
"Look at you, a mother! Little Tree and Little Grass's birthday is January 18th!"
