Chapter 1 Crossing the Famine Year

"Big brother, is Mother... dead? Waaaaah!"

Yin Lan was in pain all over her body when she heard a child crying.

She struggled to open her eyes.

Before her, a little boy, as thin as a beggar, suddenly withdrew his hand and stared at her with wide eyes.

Beside her was a younger child, also extremely thin, who was clearly the one who had just called her "Mom".

What's going on?

The next second, a flood of memories rushed into her mind.

Yin Lan unexpectedly transmigrated into the body of the villainous second male lead's mother, who died young, in a tragic novel.

"What?!" Yin Lan almost cursed out loud.

In the book, the second male lead grew up in a famine era. His parents died early, and his two younger brothers also died in the famine. He was exceptionally intelligent, but he became ruthless and used various means to eventually become a great merchant.

He should have had a glorious life, but in the end, he was deceived by the female lead and imprisoned.

Yin Lan was his mother who died young.

Yin Lan refused to face this reality. Let it be destroyed!

She shrank further into the bed.

Her forehead hit the wall, and she gasped in pain.

"Mother...please don't try to kill yourself..."

The child who tried to pull Yin Lan away, yet was also afraid of her, is probably the second male lead, Chen Yiqi.

"You dare to try to kill yourself? I think you deserve to be beaten to death!" Just then, an old woman in tattered clothes walked in, cursing.

The child, as if grasping at a straw, cried out, "Grandma Zhao, save my mother!"

The old woman snorted and glared at Yin Lan with disdain. "You sent so many things back to your parents' home, and you still got beaten up? I think you should move your whole family there."

As she spoke, she glanced at the two children who looked like refugees, then looked at Yin Lan, wishing she were dead.

“You don’t give a single penny of your allowance to the kids, and you’ve moved all the good stuff from the house to your parents’ house. I think you’ll be satisfied when you’ve starved all three kids to death. Keep sending them away, keep sending them away. I think you’ll die tomorrow, and these little brats won’t live past the end of the year.”

Yin Lan: .....

This was the first time she had ever been verbally abused like this.

Despite the harsh words she uttered, the old woman was one of the few people in the village willing to even glance at her.

The original owner of this body was a terrible person, lazy and gluttonous, devoted to her maternal family, and would beat and scold her children at will, regardless of their mood. No one in the village respected her.

However, the original owner was so beautiful that many men were interested in her. She herself had her eye on a scholar, but her parents disregarded her wishes and married him off to her because Chen Yourun offered a large dowry.

Chen Yourun was a rough man and couldn't get along with the original owner at all. Later, when he was conscripted into the army, he finally left, and the original owner breathed a sigh of relief. Because her family promised to help her get a divorce and then marry a scholar, she kept sending money and silver home.

For example, the allowances Chen Yourun sent back, the household items she acquired, and the house she built were all sold and sent back to her parents' home.

Her own three children, however, became little "refugees".

She sent so many things back, but because of the locust and wild boar plagues that plagued the country this year, the harvest was poor. The Yin family complained that she hadn't sent enough, and she was even beaten by her own older brother.

There wasn't even a decent doctor in the village, and the original owner of this body died after lying in bed for a few days, so Yin Lan transmigrated into this body.

"Mother... Waaah..."

Yin Lan was desperate. Hearing those words made her feel even more pain. Looking around, she felt like dying.

The dilapidated mud-brick house contained nothing but a bed.

Not far away, outside that dark and tattered curtain, was a pot set up, which served as the kitchen...?

Rice, oil, flour, and other grains were luxuries; all that remained were three refugee children, still wearing only a tattered single layer of clothing in the dead of winter, staring at her with fear and hunger.

Destroy it, quickly.

"I drank it."

Just then, Old Mrs. Zhao brought a bowl of soup to her lips. It was dark and murky, with a few vegetable leaves and a few grains of rice on top.

Just as Yin Lan was about to refuse, her stomach started growling.

She's weak and powerless right now, probably because she's hungry.

Yin Lan resignedly gulped down two large mouthfuls.

It tastes awful.

Old Mrs. Zhao left, cursing and swearing, "She'll ruin herself sooner or later."

Yin Lan finally had a little strength to observe the two children who dared not approach her. Her face was so thin that it was almost just bones, but fortunately, she was good-looking.

In the dead of winter, the child was wearing only a thin outer shirt and was shivering from the cold.

So, the cold sensation on her forehead just now wasn't from the ice, but from the child's hand?

She herself was wearing a half-new cotton-padded coat.

It's a miracle the child is still alive...

The original owner of this body must have been a real mother.

"Mother, is there any rice left?" Chen Yiqi asked cautiously.

Yin Lan gave all the last bit of millet in the house to her eldest uncle, wanting to ask if there was any left.

If he didn't cook, his mother would beat him; if he questioned her, he would also be beaten. Chen Yiqi was terrified, but he had no choice; he had to protect his younger brother.

Looking at the terrified child, Yin Lan thought, "With him like this, he'll definitely be a big villain in the future... He looks so shrewd, how did he get tricked by the female lead like that?"

She can't worry about the future right now; the important thing is the present...

Now that she's alive, she won't let herself be sucked dry again. She wants to get back what she's given away, but she barely has any strength left.

“That’s all. You two are annoying to look at. Take that broken bowl and go find your Grandma Zhao.” Yin Lan spoke, her voice hoarse.

In my memory, this old lady Zhao's family wasn't wealthy, but she wouldn't just stand by and watch her child starve to death.

Chen Yiqi could turn around and run away without having to face his mother, who might beat him at any moment.

Chen Erqi, who had been hiding behind him, ran even faster.
