Chapter 19 The Magical Leaves

Erwa was extremely proud.

Erhu then tried to give the cornbread to Erwa.

Erwa refused, saying, "I ate breakfast and dinner today. It was rice porridge, and it smelled so good..." Erwa's description made Erhu swallow hard. He could only drink thick white rice porridge made from new rice once a year.

"I'll save some for you next time, and we can eat together!" This time he ate too fast and completely forgot about it.

Erwa gave another piece of fried dough to Erhu, asking him to pass it on to Dahu. Then he waved goodbye, and the two children said their farewells warmly.

They had only taken a couple of steps when several children, a few years older than Erwa and Erhu, suddenly walked over from the roadside. The one leading them was Widow Ye's son, Tian Youwei.

He was older and a head taller than the other children, and was the village bully. He looked at Erwa with disdain.

"White rice porridge, Chen Erwa, are you crazy for porridge? What nonsense are you spouting? Your stuff will be taken away tomorrow, you won't get a single bite, and if you do, your mother will give you a good spanking, hee hee hee..."

Chen Erwa's face puffed up with anger, "My mother wouldn't do that!"

"What kind of person is your mother...she..." Tian Youwei followed Widow Ye, hearing nothing but vicious words about Yin Lan, "A spendthrift, an ungrateful wretch, a big ungrateful wretch raising a little ungrateful wretch, hahaha..."

Chen Erwa was so angry that his neck turned red and his fists cracked. In the past, Erwa didn't feel anything when others insulted his mother, but now, he wouldn't allow anyone to insult his mother!

Ignoring the fact that there were three people on the other side, each taller than him, Erwa charged forward like a small cannonball and bit Tian Youwei's thigh hard.

"Ah..." Tian Youwei cried out in pain, "You stray dog, you bastard..."

As Tian Youwei reached out to pull Chen Erwa away, Erwa, angered by his last curse, took another big bite and then ran frantically toward his own door.

Tian Youwei's leg was in terrible pain; it was probably bleeding. That bastard.

He gritted his teeth in hatred, took off his shoe, and threw it at Erwa.

"Brother, shall we chase after them?"

Tian Youwei was furious, but the Chen family were military dependents, and if he offended them, Aunt Yin would complain to the village head. He had been punished before for stealing, so...

"never mind."

Tian Youwei gritted his teeth, "Chen Erwa, you just wait!"

Erwa, who was running away, was suddenly hit on the head by something.

It hurt a little, but he didn't care what it was; he picked it up and ran home.

When Grandma Zhao saw the steamed bun in Erhu's hand, she frowned and asked, "Why didn't you give it to him?"

"Grandma, Erwa ate white rice porridge for dinner."

What?

"They even brought me some fried pork cracklings!" Erhu took out the fried pork cracklings in his hand. "These are for my older brother; I've already eaten mine."

Generally, pork cracklings are a treat for children; adults, out of consideration for their kids, usually don't eat them themselves.

The whole family was extremely surprised.

This afternoon, Mrs. Yin made a scene, but she ate so well tonight, even the kids got to eat. Has she really changed her ways?

But then Old Mrs. Zhao's expression suddenly changed again. This spendthrift woman, is this how you eat white rice? I don't even know how long Chen Yourun's allowance will last. I wonder how she'll survive the next two weeks.

It seems we'll have to cut back on the family's food rations even further, leaving a bite for those three children. As for that woman, Madam Yin... she'll starve to death... we'll only give her a bite.

Old Mrs. Zhao made up her mind with resentment.

But what she didn't know was that Yin Lanke didn't finish eating in half a month, but in just one day, since Zhao Dashan didn't see the pot and cleaver in Yin Lanke's basket.

On the other side, after Chen Erwa went out, Yin Lan looked at the stones and said, "Great job, Da Wa!"

The eldest child, who was being praised, was very proud, but he immediately controlled his expression and pretended to be nonchalant and indifferent.

Although he didn't know what his mother was going to do with these useless stones—maybe she was just playing with them—it was all worth it as long as his mother was happy.

Yin Lan was certainly not playing with the stones.

She wanted to try softening the stone and then shaping it into the form she wanted!

Even if it's just a small deal, it would be incredibly profitable with no initial investment. Whether it will succeed or not, we'll have to try tomorrow.

Next, Yin Lan began to examine the grass the two children had picked up. She wanted to know what kinds of vegetables and plants were available in this dynasty, so that the two children wouldn't pick anything poisonous.

There were only some ferns; the other wild vegetables, purslane, and perilla were already withered grass, along with some wild onions. Finally, Yin Lan's gaze fell on a few leaves. At first, she didn't pay attention, but suddenly, her eyes narrowed.

wrong.

The winters here can be below freezing. She had seen these leaves before; they grew in tropical regions and were called Yantiebaimai. Yin Lan had seen them on TV before. These ordinary leaves could be made into a special delicacy of the Dai ethnic group called Shubaiwang, a kind of jelly-like jelly, also known as tree jelly.

Yin Lan had tried it when she traveled to Yunnan before. It had a strong, refreshing herbal aroma and was very delicious!

However, that's a summer food. Now it's winter, and vegetables are very scarce. The people here have probably never seen this before. With such a jelly with a strong herbal aroma, it's worth trying to sell it.

Most importantly, the leaves used in the production are naturally occurring, making it a highly profitable business with virtually no investment.

The only question now is, why is this leaf here? Are there many leaves?

When Da Wa noticed Yin Lan's expression changing frequently, he thought there was something wrong with the leaves she had brought back. Just as he was feeling uneasy, he heard his mother ask excitedly, "Da Wa, where did these leaves come from?"

It was just a leaf he picked up randomly, and besides... besides, that place...

But Yin Lan pressed for answers, so Da Wa had no choice but to tell her.

It turns out that there is a place in the mountains behind the village where the temperature is very high. While it is below zero in winter outside, it is as warm as spring and summer there.

The strangest thing is that even the water is scalding hot!

However, the village elders said that abnormal weather must be strange, so not many people knew about it, and those who did know would never go there for fear of attracting evil spirits.

The two children were discovered by chance because we often went into the mountains.

In the past, when winter was so cold that we were almost dying, we would go there for a few hours to avoid freezing to death.

As for evil spirits and such, the child couldn't care less about freezing to death.

"Mother, we'll never go there again, please don't be angry." Da Wa looked at Yin Lan's face and pleaded nervously.

But Yin Lan's heart stirred with excitement. Warmth? Scalding water?

This isn't some kind of evil spirit or strange creature; it's clearly a hot spring!

If that place is warm like spring, there might be other plants besides these leaves of the dandelion! Yin Lan was very excited and wanted to go there to see it right away.
