Chapter 2 Auction System

A gust of cold wind blew by, and only after passing through her thin cotton coat did she feel the biting cold. No wonder there was no one outside.

She wanted to order an outfit from the system right away, but how could she explain it to her three kids?

Thinking of the three children in their thin clothes, their hands covered in chilblains, and how thin they were, almost just skin and bones, I don't know if they can survive this winter if things continue like this.

No wonder the second male lead's two younger brothers died at such a young age; it probably happened this winter.

Yin Lan pondered for a moment. She needed to find a way to go into the city to collect the allowance so that she could see how much of the money had been embezzled and at the same time, she would know where the money in her hands came from.

Having made up her mind, Yin Lan remembered that her dilapidated home was completely empty of rice, so she still bought a small bag, about a pound, of rice.

Looking at the meat in the mall, Yin Lan was overcome by a strong urge to eat meat, which had been absent from her stomach for a long time. She swallowed hard and bought half a catty, leaving her with 150 coins.

Carrying her belongings, Yin Lan walked towards the dilapidated house.

The small thatched hut offered no protection from the wind, and Yin Lan had no desire to go inside.

She was still too weak; it took her almost fifteen minutes to walk just a few hundred meters, stopping and starting frequently.

Finally reaching the door, Yin Lan wanted to call the two children out to help her, but just as she was about to speak, she heard hesitant voices coming from inside.

"Big brother, I'm hungry..."

Through the large crack in the door, Yin Lan saw her four-year-old second son, Chen Erqi, staring longingly at a broken bowl on the ground.

Chen Daqi, suppressing his drool, said, "Wait a little longer. If Mom comes back and there's nothing to eat, do you want to get a beating?"

The original owner used to send her three children to Old Lady Zhao's house. She would eat the food that came back first, and then give the last few bites to the three children.

This is... worse than a stepmother.

Yin Lan put down her things and went inside.

Both children's eyes turned to look at them.

Hunger, anxiety, fear... it had everything.

Chen Yiqi is only five and a half years old, but looks like he is less than four years old. He is as thin as a wild monkey, yet as wary as a frightened little leopard.

At such a young age, she had to take care of and support her two younger brothers, as well as endure the occasional abuse and beatings from the original owner of the body.

Because his older brother was protecting him, Chen Erqi didn't have much fear in his eyes, but he still clung tightly to his brother. He was thin and small, with dry, yellow hair like sparse weeds, and he was somewhat wary.

As for the youngest one, he can't walk yet and is fast asleep in bed.

"Mother, this is from Grandma Zhao, you should eat it," Chen Yiqi said, swallowing hard.

Yin Lan looked down and saw that the bowl contained a few yellowed, rotten vegetable leaves that had been bitten by insects, with only a few grains of rice floating on top. The rice was dark gray in color and made it unappetizing.

The two children, however, stared intently with eyes gleaming with greed.

"Um...I don't want to eat it."

The two children were startled. Yin Lan was about to say, "It looks dirty. It might make them sick. Let's throw it away."

Chen Erqi quickly picked up the bowl, but reluctantly handed it to Chen Erqi. Chen Erqi wolfed it down like a hungry wolf, then reluctantly gave it to his brother.

In just a few seconds, the bowl was completely empty. Chen Erqi then frantically licked the bowl clean, and in just a few seconds, the broken bowl was spotless, without even needing to be washed.

Yin Lan: ......

She didn't even have time to stop her.

The two children licked the last bit of soup from the corners of their mouths and kept swallowing.

The two children went to the Zhao family's house, but unexpectedly, the eldest son of the Zhao family returned, and the two children were kicked out before they even entered the house.

The last bite they ate was the last bit of rice their family had.

Chen Yiqi thought his mother would eat it all, but she didn't?

The rice soup and the few grains of rice tasted so good. He had been eating tree bark for almost a month, and the rice soup was so fragrant. It was the best food in the world!

Yin Lan had no idea that what she looked down upon was so precious to the child, which showed how pitiful the child was. The original owner of this body was really a bit too much, and this family was too poor.

Yin Lan said, "Go to the door and bring back the bags from outside."

Chen Yiqi pursed his lips. A bag? His mother had only gone out for a short while; she probably came back with some firewood.

What use is firewood if there's nothing to eat?

Yin Lan went out for a while, and when she came back, she found that her heart was beating very fast. There was no stool available, so she could only sit on the ground.

Then a joyful scream came from outside: "Rice! Rice! Lots of white rice!"

Yin Lan's lips curved into a smile.

She could imagine the child jumping for joy.

Finally, there's something to eat.

Then an even bigger shout of surprise rang out, "Mom, there's still meat!"

Yin Lan's eyes lit up too; she wanted to eat meat!
