Chapter 31 Fairy Jelly

Yin Lan wasn't idle either. Together with Zhao Dashan, they carried everything up the oxcart. The basket on her back contained a large basin of lilacs and banana taro leaves. As they passed through the village, almost everyone was already up. They were curious to see Yin Lan sitting on the oxcart, but they couldn't tell what was in the basket.

"Dashan, are we going to the county town?" someone asked.

"Hey, the chickens at home laid eggs, let's sell them for a couple of bucks."

That's how you put an end to other people's curiosity.

But when those people saw that Yin Lan was also in the car, and that the Yin family didn't have any chickens, they thought, "That spendthrift woman, she just went to the county town and spent so much money on so many things, and now she's going to spend money again."

Even if her family didn't take the money, she would still spend it all herself. Chen Yourun must have had the worst luck in eight lifetimes.

However, the men had a different opinion. Especially in the dim morning light, Yin Lan's fair skin seemed to be bathed in a soft, jade-like glow. While the men verbally complimented their wives, they secretly thought Chen Yourun was very lucky. However, since he was away from home most of the year, he wouldn't be able to enjoy such good fortune many times. Thus, their resentment and envy were suppressed.

The oxcart moved forward on the narrow village road. The sky was already full of colorful clouds. Gradually, more and more villagers carrying baskets on their backs or carrying shoulder poles appeared in front of and behind the oxcart.

They were all going into the city to buy and sell things.

Yin Lan inexplicably liked this leisurely and simple feeling, and her mood was extremely cheerful. It was as if she had returned to the rural atmosphere of her grandmother's house when she was a child, which was familiar and pleasant.

After walking for an hour and a half, I didn't feel tired at all, and the county town was already in sight in the distance.

The sun rose.

Once we entered the county town, the previously leisurely crowd began to throng. We learned that the market over there was about to open!

Zhao Dashan immediately stopped the oxcart to the side, picked up Yin Lan's basket, and said, "With my wife here, stick close to me." Then he squeezed into the crowd, rushed into the market, and, not knowing which spot was best, followed wherever others were grabbing.

When Yin Lan rushed over, Zhao Dashan was waving at her. Yin Lan looked and exclaimed, "Wow, Zhao Dashan is really something! He found a spot right at the intersection of two main roads, where the flow of people is the highest!"

There are food stalls all around, so the location was really good!

Before long, all the good spots in the market were taken, leaving only some corners and edges.

Thanks to Zhao Dashan, today's start was very good. Yin Lan also quickly turned the basket upside down and laid a banana leaf on it, thus making a small stall.

Unlike the eggs sold next door, which are placed on the ground and appear to lack quality.

Then Yin Lan propped up another leaf on the tree jelly, so that when the sunlight shone down, it added a natural green filter to the jelly, making the already emerald green tree jelly look as dazzling as a gemstone.

All the bamboo knives, leaves for wrapping jelly, etc., were neatly arranged to one side.

It looks clean and hygienic.

Zhao Dashan had never expected to do this, and he couldn't help but take another look at Yin Lan.

Yin Lan had an indigo cloth wrapped around her head, revealing a small, fair face that was as white as jade. It was a delightful sight to behold when she was eating.

These were just simple preparations. Zhao Dashan was ready to stand nearby like the people who wanted to buy eggs and sesame balls, just waiting for customers to come and buy.

Unexpectedly, Yin Lan lowered her head and whispered to Zhao Dashan, "Brother Dashan, when I'm selling something later, you pretend to be someone who's buying my Fairy Jelly, and then call me Jelly Beauty, understand?"

Yin Lan had already inquired and found that there was also a story about Xi Shi here, which could be directly used.

"Why...why?" Zhao Dashan asked, puzzled and extremely nervous.

Yin Lan didn't have time to explain, "Do as I say."

At this time, people who want to buy things have gradually come in, but everyone is still looking around.

They are familiar with eggs, and if someone needs them, they ask the price and if it's reasonable, they just pay for it directly.

Some people were also drawn to Yin Lan's stall and her as a person, and took a second look.

But what is that greenish thing?

Most people would only glance at her and then leave. Only a few men who looked dishonest came over, but they only talked to Yin Lan and didn't seem interested in buying anything.

Yin Lan urged Zhao Dashan.

Zhao Dashan could only walk a little further away, pretending to be a customer looking around as he was about to pass by.

Then they heard the usually shy and quiet wife of the runner loudly calling out, "Come and take a look! Fresh and refreshing fairy jelly, the most popular food in the capital right now, a top-notch delicacy that even high-ranking officials and nobles are vying to buy!"

Upon hearing the name of a high-ranking official, someone looked over.

Yin Lan cut a small piece of what she called "Fairy Jelly," not because of her large face, but because it was an unfamiliar food, just packaged up.

She began to explain, "This food was created by a scholar from a previous dynasty who repeatedly failed the imperial examinations while traveling through mountains and rivers..."

When Yin Lan began to tell her story, her voice was melodious and rhythmic, drawing the attention of everyone around her.

She continued, "But he took the wrong path, and, starving and unable to find his way back, he feared he would starve to death. Just as he was about to faint from hunger, he suddenly saw what appeared to be a fairy descending from the sky. When he awoke, there was a bowl of this emerald-green jelly beside him, but he didn't see the fairy..."

"And then, did the fairy really come?" Everyone began to wonder.

Yin Lan didn't keep him in suspense. "The scholar didn't know either. He was starving, so he ate some cold noodles and found them to be so delicious. They were smooth and bouncy, with a fresh scent of leaves that made him feel refreshed. It was as if his mind became much clearer."

"Later, the scholar returned to his studies and his studies became extremely smooth. He directly achieved the third-highest rank in the imperial examination! Then the emperor took a liking to him and wanted to bestow a princess in marriage upon him, but the scholar refused."

Yin Lan spoke like a storyteller, immediately building up anticipation.

"Why? She's a princess! Why doesn't the scholar agree?"

Yin Lan smiled gently, "Because in his heart there is only the fairy who saved him with the jelly."

Everyone suddenly realized.

"The emperor was furious. How dare the scholar refuse him! Of course, he had to be taught a lesson. But just as the scholar was about to be punished, the princess hurriedly came out from behind the curtain. The scholar looked at her and exclaimed, 'Oh, this princess looks just like that fairy!'"

"From then on, the princess often made this fairy jelly for the scholar. The scholar later became an official and prime minister, and the two lived a loving life together."

Everyone was captivated by the story.

Yin Lan chuckled to herself. She hadn't expected that her ability to make up stories would be so strong. This incredibly melodramatic story had captivated everyone around her.

"Eating fairy-like jelly and savoring a scholar's fantastical dream~"
