Chapter 7 Borrowing an Ox Cart

Upon hearing that they were going to find the village head, Zhao Dachuan hesitated for a moment, but still glared at Yin Lan resentfully before walking away, cursing, "Digging for food in the fields? I bet this land won't yield a single bite of food sooner or later!"

Yin Lan suddenly remembered that the second male lead's hometown had indeed experienced a major famine. It seemed that the land gradually became saline-alkali due to geographical reasons. At first, there was just a reduction in yield for no reason, but it became more and more serious, and eventually, not a single grain of rice could be harvested.

In the past two years, due to both drought and floods, it's no surprise that grain production has decreased. But in fact, the soil in the fields has already begun to change.

Yin Lan suddenly remembered that when she was searching through the system, she had seen alkaline wheat seeds being auctioned. At the time, she had wondered why, but now...

"What...are you doing here?" While Yin Lan was still pondering, Old Mrs. Zhao saw her and asked hesitantly and disdainfully.

Although she would give the child a bite to eat, she had no desire to associate with Yin Lan, who was known for being lazy and gluttonous. The original owner of this body naturally looked down on an old woman covered in patches.

"Aunt Zhao, I'm out of grain at home. Can I borrow some from you? I'll go to the county to buy some today and pay you back when I get back." Yin Lan's attitude was extremely kind.

Grandma Zhao stared at her suspiciously.

She has land at home but doesn't cultivate it, leaving it to lie fallow. She feels heartbroken just looking at it. Relying on her allowance, she even goes to the county to buy grain to eat. This spendthrift woman truly lives up to her reputation!

He used to never speak to anyone, but now he's acting all fawning and obsequious. It seems like there's no food left in the house.

Grandma Zhao looked down on people like that. If it were Yin Lan herself, she would rather starve to death than lend money. What's the point of lending? How could someone like her possibly pay it back?

Instead, I think of those three poor children.

Old Mrs. Zhao tightened her skin and said in a harsh tone, "Wait here." She then went inside without even glancing at Yin Lan.

"His attitude was terrible, but he's a good person," Yin Lan thought.

Old Mrs. Zhao was probably the only one in the whole village willing to lend her grain.

There was no way she could just conjure up more grain out of thin air.

Breakfast is a must, so I used this as an excuse to come and get some food. I'll leave it for a while and then go to the county. It's time to collect the allowance. Whether I get it or not, as long as I have a reason, that's fine.

A moment later, Grandma Sun came out carrying a tattered cloth bag, threw it directly into Yin Lan's hand, snorted through her nose, and turned to leave.

"Aunt Zhao, could I borrow your oxcart for a moment?" Yin Lan called out to her with a smile.

Grandma Zhao looked on in disbelief. How could this person be so shameless?

"Just once," Yin Lan said, holding up her index finger with pleading eyes. "Please, please."

In her past life, she was very good at acting coquettishly in front of her parents. Although this old lady Zhao didn't like her, Yin Lan felt close to her and acted coquettishly without any pressure.

The old woman had spent her whole life toiling in the fields and always spoke in a loud, rough voice. She had never seen someone who looked like an angel act so sweetly and coquettishly. She felt as if she had been electrocuted, and a thick layer of goosebumps immediately rose on her skin.

If even an old woman like her can't stand it, what would happen if it were a man?

No wonder, the Chen family's son has been incredibly doting on people these past few days since he came back.

I can't stand it, I really can't stand it.

"Aunt Zhao~" Yin Lan's voice was almost melting as she reached out to take her arm.

"Borrow, borrow, borrow! You...you stay away from me..." Old Mrs. Zhao took several steps back, hurriedly avoiding this little devil. "When will you...you...come back for it?" She could barely speak.

Yin Lan smiled gently, "Thank you."

Ouch.

Old Mrs. Zhao didn't even dare to look at her, and quickly scurried into the house. That little vixen...

Yin Lan chuckled. What a simple, honest old woman.

She thought of her grandparents' generation, who had heard that even during sex... in modern terms, they used the most conservative positions, unlike modern people who are so adventurous.

Even the few remaining memories she had of the original owner's experiences with scenes unsuitable for children were depicted with great restraint.

She probably won't have the chance to experience it again in this lifetime. With a system in hand, what use is a man?

Yin Lan picked up the bag, glanced at it, and saw a handful of stale, blackened rice.

Despite its dark color and small quantity, it's probably the best food in Grandma Zhao's house.

It would be a lie to say that Yin Lan's heart was not moved.

She focused her mind and took another half a pound of white rice from the system, put it in her pocket, and spent twenty coins.

Then she returned to her little hut, satisfied. As soon as she got home, she saw two children dressed in long, baggy clothes, carrying a large basket on their backs, about to go out.

Seeing Yin Lan's questioning gaze, she said, "Mother, breakfast is inside. Let's go out and dig for wild vegetables."

In the dead of winter, what wild vegetables could there be? Nothing more than some wilted, withered leaves.

"Don't go, come back."

Upon entering the house, Yin Lan saw a bowl of wild vegetable soup. She knew that there were probably a few wild vegetables left over from yesterday, so the two little ones had only drunk the soup, right?

well.

"Go get the medicine and wipe your hands and buttocks again. Then have breakfast again later."

Yin Lan spoke, and Chen Yiqi pursed his lips, but dared not disobey. Erqi, the naive and sweet boy, followed his brother and asked, "Mom, what do you want to eat?"

"I borrowed some rice from Grandma Sun, let's have some porridge." Since we've already gone there, we should naturally explain where the food came from.

"Wow!" Erwa cheered loudly, which cheered Yin Lan up as well.

The eldest child pursed his lips.

Yesterday, so much grain was wasted in one meal, and today they actually borrowed grain to eat. They won't be able to pay it back, and not only will they feel sorry for Grandma Zhao, but they also won't be able to borrow any more grain for the family. Mother is simply not a person who can manage a household; she is such a spendthrift.

He opened his mouth, but dared not utter a single word.

Forget it, at worst he can go work as a laborer at Grandma Zhao's house and return the things sooner or later.

Thinking about it, I went to the inner room and wiped each other's hands and bottoms. It felt so cool and refreshing!

Outside, Yin Lan was squatting on the ground cooking porridge. Her legs were curled up, which was really uncomfortable. She had to find a way to get the table and chairs back as soon as possible. And this kitchen was like something a savage would use, with a rope hanging the pot above and a fire burning underneath. It was incredibly inconvenient. A "renovation and upgrade" for the house was urgently needed.

Soon, the porridge began to boil, the rice grains dancing merrily as they tumbled about, releasing an enticing aroma.

The two kids came out as soon as they smelled it.

"Mother, Third Brother is awake and playing by himself," Second Brother reported, his mouth full of drool, as he looked at the pot.

He and his brother just had wild vegetable soup, and now they can have porridge too. Mom is amazing!

The eldest child pursed his lips.

The porridge was ready, three bowls, still about the same amount. This time, Yin Lan asked that the porridge cool down a bit before eating, otherwise the two kids would be so eager that their throats would be burned.

Just as Erwa was getting impatient and started to coax Yinlan, it was finally time to eat.

The fragrant porridge was devoured by the two little piglets in big gulps.

This was the most lavish breakfast they had eaten in years.

After finishing eating, the entire bowl was licked clean, spotless.
