First, we went to the sweet potato field, cut down all the sweet potato vines, put them aside, and then started digging up the sweet potatoes.
The soil was very soft, making the sweet potatoes easy to dig up, and they all grew quite large. As expected, the sweet potatoes grown on stubble land were relatively large.
Xu Han dug up all the sweet potatoes on the one-acre plot herself, and it took her half an afternoon to finish.
Then I leveled the soil again. The soil that was just dug doesn't need to be loosened anymore. We can plant wheat directly tomorrow.
Xu Han didn't go home until dark. Her shoulders were sore from a day of hard work, so she boiled a pot of water and took a bath first.
As she soaked in the water, drowsiness gradually crept in. Xu Han suddenly jolted awake and quickly got out of the water. If she fell asleep, she would definitely catch a cold. It was better not to soak anymore!
After tidying up, I ate dinner by myself and then went straight to bed.
The next day, they got up very early to plant wheat.
First, use a hoe to dig a trench, then evenly scatter the wheat seeds into it, and finally cover it with a layer of soil.
This process was repeated until all the wheat seeds were planted, which I estimate to be a little over one acre.
Luckily, Xu Han planted the sweet potatoes right next to the scallion field, otherwise the sweet potato field we dug yesterday wouldn't have been enough!
Another day has passed. Today ended early, and in the evening, Xu Han sat in the house processing the remaining lotus seeds.
Lotus seeds are so hard to process! It's been so many days and I still haven't finished. Luckily, there's only a little left. I soaked the older lotus seeds in water beforehand, and they were easier to peel after soaking.
Fortunately, everything can be processed today, so I won't have to peel lotus seeds tomorrow. My fingers have been aching from peeling them for the past few days.
Xu Han worked overtime today and peeled all the lotus seeds in one go, working until almost midnight before she went to rest.
A good night's sleep...
On the third day, after getting up, Xu Han took a walk around the yard, thinking about what to do that day!
Then I thought of the winter melons outside, which had ripened in large quantities and there was nowhere to put them. So I decided to make them into dried winter melons!
Then he took the scissors and went out to pick winter melons in the melon patch.
Each winter melon is quite large, with some weighing dozens of kilograms. They take up a lot of space when stored, so Xu Han decided to dry more winter melons, otherwise there would be no place to store them.
Using scissors, I picked the ripe winter melons with white frost and started harvesting them. The harvested winter melons were then stored directly in my spatial storage, as the basket was too small and only one was enough to fill it.
Xu Han picked dozens of them before stopping to dry them. She said she would only dry these for now, as there wouldn't be enough room to dry them all in the yard if she cut too many.
After picking the winter melons, Xu Han tied several ropes in the yard so she could use them to dry the melons later.
Then I moved the cutting board out into the yard and started cutting the winter melon.
Peel the winter melons after picking them, cut them into round slices, and hang them on a rope to dry in the sun.
Remove the seeds and pith from the sliced winter melon, then cut a slit at one end of the circle so it can be hung on a string later.
Winter melons are quite large, making them difficult to cut. If you cut them in half, you can't hang them on a rope to dry, so cutting them is quite a chore.
After cutting a few, I carried the wooden basin over to dry the winter melon rings.
Winter melon peel can also be dried and used to make tea, but there are already many beverages for making tea, and tea made from winter melon peel doesn't taste good, so Xu Han threw away all the winter melon peel.
Xu Han spent the whole day repeatedly cutting and drying winter melons. By mid-afternoon, the yard was full of drying winter melons, and only then did Xu Han stop.
Like pumpkin and bamboo shoots, winter melon has a high water content, so it doesn't retain much moisture after drying. After this batch of dried winter melon is completely dried, I'll make some more and save them for later.
After finishing drying the winter melon, Xu Han took her basket and went out again to see if there was anything else she could pick nearby.
I wandered around outside and picked up some wild goji berries and some prickly pears that were almost finished growing, but that wasn't much.
Xu Han had looted almost everything in the vicinity. Seeing that it was getting late, she went home.
Back home, Xu Han first washed her hair before it got dark, and then went to the backyard to tend to the vegetables.
It's getting cold, time to plant garlic, but we don't have any garlic seeds at home yet. I'll have to buy more next time I go to the county town.
We need to grow more garlic, as it's indispensable for everyday cooking. Now, besides the vegetable garden, there's no other open space left.
We still need to plant early vegetables in the garden! We can't plant them here then, it's better to plant them outside so as not to delay planting early vegetables in the spring.
But the potatoes and sweet potatoes in the wasteland outside haven't been harvested yet! There should still be time.
Xu Han remembers that her mother used to wait until she pulled up the chili peppers and tomatoes before planting garlic!
The chili peppers and tomatoes haven't been harvested yet; we can buy garlic seeds in the county town in a couple of days.
The onion seedlings I cultivated a while ago have all grown up and should be planted soon. They all need to be planted outdoors.
We can still plant a batch of vegetables next year. Although there will be drought, we can still ensure that the summer crops can be harvested, although the yield will definitely be less.
After all, a complete drought to the point of having no water won't happen so quickly. After the high temperatures and intense sunshine of summer, water resources will become extremely scarce around autumn.
However, this place is considered to be deep in the mountains, so the water source is relatively abundant, with many flowing streams nearby.
The drought is progressing more slowly than the drought in the lower part of the mountain, and it's unclear how long it will last. We'll just have to wait and see how things develop before making any changes to our plans.
The most important thing now is to live in the present. Since we knew in advance that there would be a drought, we should use this time to do what needs to be done, and leave the rest to fate.
Xu Han watered the onion seedlings again before returning to the front yard. It was almost dark. She first put the dried winter melons into her spatial storage and planned to take them out to dry again tomorrow.
After dinner, I took out the chickens and ducks that I hadn't finished processing from the storage space and started processing them.
On the fourth day, after getting up, I first took out the things that needed to be dried and put them out to air.
The persimmons are already dried. They're just being squeezed a little more, and we can collect them around noon.
After squeezing the persimmons, Xu Han went to the fish basket and put the fish away; she had forgotten to put the fish basket away last night.
Lu Chuan has been in charge of collecting the fish baskets lately, and Xu Han didn't even think about collecting them yesterday.
When we arrived at the destination, we put away the fish basket, which was already packed full of fish and shrimp. A few fish and shrimp had escaped, but the final result was still very good.
After collecting the fish, Xu Han put the fish basket back in and leisurely went home.
When I passed by the wasteland, I saw that another batch of chili peppers had ripened, so I picked them and used them to dry.
