Chapter 111 Picking Hawthorns

When I got home, it was still early. I had been away from home for two or three days, so I quickly tidied up the house.

We didn't bring the dogs with us on this trip to the county town. Before we left, we even blocked the path to the backyard, otherwise the chickens, ducks, and geese in the backyard would have been wiped out by them.

Lu Chuan went to the backyard to feed the chickens, ducks, and geese, and cleaned up their pens as well. Xu Han cleaned up the front yard, which had been in a mess for the past few days since no one had taken care of them.

After cleaning up, Xu Han went to the backyard and picked some vegetables from the garden.

There are hardly any vegetables left in the garden now; cucumbers, green beans, and the like have all withered.

After Xu Han finished picking the vegetables, she and Lu Chuan pulled up the vegetables in the garden and also turned over the soil.

After all that commotion, it got dark. The temperature was fine down in the last two days, not particularly cold, but it was noticeably colder tonight.

It's already October, so we need to pack up everything we need to prevent it from freezing.

The two went into the kitchen together and began preparing dinner.

"It's been a long time since I've had noodles. Let's have chicken soup and vegetable noodles tonight!" Xu Han suggested.

“Sure! This is convenient and saves a lot of trouble,” Lu Chuan agreed.

Xu Han took out chicken soup from her spatial storage, rolled out some noodles, and took out some bok choy. Then she started cooking. It was very simple and would be ready in no time.

The two chatted as they ate noodles. Xu Han said, "Let's go pick some hawthorns tomorrow! The weather is getting colder and colder; it'll probably frost soon."

"Okay, you can pick more of these. Aren't you going to use hawthorns to make something delicious?"

"Hmm! We can make candied hawthorn skewers, hawthorn cakes, and all sorts of delicious things! Pick more, there's still plenty of empty space in the space!"

"Okay, then let's start picking tomorrow."

"Oh right, the grain we bought hasn't been taken out yet! I'll put it in the cellar. It's all unprocessed and can be stored in the cellar for two or three years!" Xu Han added.

"I'll go with you to get it after we finish eating."

After saying that, the two continued eating. After finishing their meal, Lu Chuan washed the dishes, and Xu Han tidied the table. Once everything was done, the two went to the cellar together.

The contents of the cellar were sorted and organized. Frequently used items were placed to one side, leaving the inner space empty to store grain.

Fortunately, the cellar we dug was big enough to hold a lot of things, otherwise we really wouldn't have been able to store so much grain.

After arranging all the grains, there was still plenty of space left, so Xu Han took out dried vegetables and other foods that could be left out without needing to be preserved.

Inside the Teng Yi Teng space, a section needs to be reserved for transporting items.

When they came out, Xu Han took out some flour and vegetables that they would use daily and put them directly into the storeroom. They could take whatever they needed from the storeroom, which would be more convenient for the two of them.

After everything was tidied up, it was already late, so I washed up and went to rest.

The next day, after getting up and having breakfast, Lu Chuan and Xu Han took the dogs out.

After being cooped up at home for several days, the dogs started running around like crazy as soon as they came out.

First, they arrived at the hawthorn tree near their home. Xu Han picked one, tasted it, and found it very sour, but no longer astringent, so they could start picking more.

So Lu Chuan climbed up the tree and began to shake the hawthorn tree.

Xu Han then took out an oilcloth and laid it underneath, so she could simply scoop it up in a little while.

The hawthorn berries are bright red and very beautiful, but they are all wild and don't grow particularly large. Although they are not big, you can pick quite a few from one tree.

After the tarpaulin was laid out, Lu Chuan began to shake the hawthorn tree. The fully ripe hawthorns fell down with just a slight shake.

The bright red hawthorns that were hanging there fell to the ground instantly, along with the hawthorn leaves. In no time, there were no more hawthorns on the tree.

The two then began to pack up the oilcloth and pour the hawthorns into their baskets.

When we get home, we'll carefully pick out the hawthorns and gather up any that have rolled off the branches.

When picking them, you need to be careful. Pick out any prematurely ripened or fallen, rotten fruits to prevent them from infecting the other hawthorn fruits.

After picking up all of these, the two continued walking towards the next hawthorn tree.

The hawthorn trees grow quite sparsely, making them difficult to pick, and most of the time is wasted on the road.

Along the way to pick hawthorns, they would also dig up any suitable medicinal herbs they encountered.

Since we've come all this way and traveled so far, we can't go back empty-handed!

By mid-afternoon, the two started walking home. It was getting dark quickly, and they had less and less time to work throughout the day. They hadn't picked many hawthorns all day.

On the way back, Lu Chuan said, "How about we don't go home tonight? It gets dark early now, and we didn't pick much today. It's such a waste of time."

"Alright! It's just that the chickens, ducks and geese at home have suffered. They've been going hungry for a while now and they've all gotten thin."

"Then when we leave tomorrow, let them out and open the gate. Keep them in the backyard! Later, we'll build a larger enclosure with bamboo, pile the chickens, ducks, geese, and earthworms together, and add more water."

"That works too. There are still a lot of bamboo branches outside the yard! We can use them to block it out and make a simple enclosure."

After finalizing the plan, the two hurried home, hoping to get it done quickly before it got dark.

After arriving home, Lu Chuan began burying bamboo in the soil, burying it in a row, which directly divided the backyard in two. These bamboos were used as supports, and then a longer bamboo was used to tie horizontally in the middle, with several more tied together, to secure it.

When they were halfway through their work, it got completely dark. Xu Han brought out torches, lit a few more, and fixed them in place for illumination.

Bring in more bamboo branches and corn stalks to enclose the area, making sure the chickens, ducks, and geese can't escape.

It is surrounded by bamboo on one side, and walls on the other three sides.

This makes the space much larger, and all the gates are open. If it rains, you can go back into the enclosure to take shelter, and you can also enjoy a buffet. It's really great!

After everything was done, it was already late. Xu Han took out food from her spatial storage, and after the two finished eating, Xu Han began preparing the things they would need for their trip into the mountains the next day.

Lu Chuan was preparing the tools he might need, storing them all in his space for future use.

After tidying up, it was already past nine o'clock. After washing up, another day had passed.

A good night's sleep...
