Chapter 118 Harvesting sweet potatoes, scallions, and ginger.

“Okay, while the weather’s good, I’ll tan the rabbit skin first. When it gets colder, you can use it to make clothes or something,” Lu Chuan replied.

Lu Chuan knows how to tan leather himself, and he sells all the leftover furs from his family's previous use.

Since Xu Han came, the family has stopped selling their hides and kept them all.

We've accumulated a lot of furs at home, and they're all piled up in the storage room.

I need to take some time to organize them. There are too many, and I can't use them all. I can sell some while fur is more expensive in winter. It would be a waste if I couldn't wear them all.

Most importantly, there's no room left at home. Lu's parents' room, storage room, woodshed, and cellar are all piled up with stuff, and the space is completely full. And there are still so many sweet potatoes that haven't been harvested yet!

When you have some free time, you should tidy up your room and organize it properly so you can store more things.

After dinner, Lu Chuan scraped the fat off the rabbit skin inside the house, and Xu Han helped him with the process.

The next day, Xu Han got up, ate breakfast, spread out the wild chrysanthemums to dry, and then took a basket to the sweet potato field to pick sweet potato leaves.

The sweet potato leaves have been hit by frost and have turned black, but some have been shielded from the frost.

You should only pick the ones that have turned completely black; those are the ones that taste best.

Sweet potato leaf noodles are especially delicious, with a unique dried vegetable flavor. They taste even better when cooked with shredded beef.

Xu Han picked some large, clean leaves to pick, but after picking all morning she hadn't picked many, so she decided to stop.

In the afternoon, let's set the cut sweet potato leaves aside for now and pick them slowly when we have some free time!

When it was lunchtime, Xu Han took her basket and went home. Once home, she first poured the sweet potato leaves onto a winnowing basket to dry.

Turning to look at Lu Chuan's progress, Lu Chuan hadn't finished tanning all the rabbit skins he had accumulated in the space.

Tanning fur is not something that can be done in a day or two. Today's process is just a simple one; it will require multiple more processes later.

The tanning process is complete once the rabbit skin has softened completely and lost its odor. After that, the rabbit skin can be used to make clothes or other items.

Lu Chuan had already tanned the sheepskins and cowhides from before, and they were stored in the warehouse! In addition, there were many rabbit skins that he hadn't sold and was hoarding them all!

Xu Han helped them finish the task, and then the two of them went back to the front yard to have lunch together.

Xu Han took lunch directly from her spatial storage. It was already late, so they didn't cook anything. Both of them were hungry, so it was faster to eat something ready-made.

After lunch, we took our sickles and hoes and went to the sweet potato field.

Xu Han was in charge of cutting sweet potato vines, while Lu Chuan dragged the vines out and placed them on the edge of the field.

The wet sweet potato vines were really heavy, and Xu Han couldn't carry so many at once. It was tiring and a waste of time, so Lu Chuan took over the job.

After cutting some sweet potato vines, Lu Chuan started digging sweet potatoes. Since sweet potatoes grow in the ground and cannot be touched or seen, the first shovel strike cut them in half.

Undeterred, Lu Chuan dug again, and unsurprisingly, it rotted again. This time, Lu Chuan dared not be careless and began to dig the sweet potatoes seriously.

Although some sweet potatoes still rot, there are more intact ones now. After gradually finding the right techniques, fewer sweet potatoes rot.

But there will still be some, since you can't see what sweet potatoes look like and can only dig them up blindly based on your feelings and experience.

The two worked until dark before they finally finished digging up all the sweet potatoes in the more than one acre of land.

There are still nearly five acres of sweet potatoes left to harvest!

When the land was first cleared, aside from the areas for planting pumpkins and winter melons, six or seven acres were cleared on the east side of the road, and the same amount was cleared on the west side.

One side is used to grow corn and soybeans, while the other side is used to grow sweet potatoes.

There weren't originally so many sweet potato seedlings, but after the sweet potato vines grew, Xu Han cut some off and propagated them, which is why there are so many sweet potatoes now.

Later, Lu Chuan and Xu Han opened up more than two acres to grow cabbage and radishes.

Besides sweet potatoes, there are still cabbages, scallions, and ginger in the field that haven't been harvested yet.

These should all be harvested now, stored in the cellar. After harvesting the sweet potatoes, everything will be harvested.

It's about to freeze, so we can't let it get damaged by the cold, or all our efforts will be wasted.

The two returned home, rested for a while, had dinner, and then went to bed.

The next day, Lu Chuan and Xu Han spent the whole day harvesting sweet potatoes in the field, and ate the food from their space for lunch and dinner.

Finally, we managed to harvest all the sweet potatoes in the field and bring them home before dark.

The third day arrived in the blink of an eye. Today, Xu Han and Lu Chuan were to harvest all the remaining scallions and ginger from the field.

The cabbage can be kept for a while. We can harvest it again in a few days after we've dealt with the other crops and have more space.

Now that we've harvested them, there's nowhere to put them. The cellars are full, the warehouses are full, and even the corridor outside is piled with sweet potatoes. We're covering them with tarpaulins to prevent them from freezing at night!

Sweet potatoes and potatoes are both high-yield crops, and together they cover about thirteen acres of land! There's definitely not enough room for them all.

The two of them first went to the scallion field, where Lu Chuan was in charge of digging up the scallions.

Xu Han was responsible for tidying up the scallions, removing the old leaves, arranging them neatly one by one, tying them into a bundle with rope, and then cutting off half of the top scallion leaves to save some space.

Bundles of scallions can be stored in a cellar for a long time without dehydrating.

The two worked together and by lunchtime they had dug up and processed all the scallions.

Xu Han returned home, washed her hands, made herself and Lu Chuan a cup of tea, sat down to rest for a while, and then took out lunch from her spatial storage and began to eat.

After lunch, they went to harvest ginger. Lu Chuan was in charge of digging the ginger out of the soil.

Xu Han then used scissors to cut off the ginger stems and separated the old ginger from the young ginger, placing them in different places.

This process continued until it got dark, but the last bit of ginger was still not dug up, so they had no choice but to wait until the next day to harvest it.

Fortunately, there aren't many left, and it won't be long before they're all collected.

Although it's already dark, it's only a little past five o'clock. Unfortunately, it gets dark early, and there's not much work to do after dark.

Back home, Xu Han took out the ingredients for hot pot from her spatial storage. These were leftovers from a previous hot pot meal, so there was no need to prepare anything else; they could be eaten right away.

The two ate hotpot while discussing how to deal with the crops piled up at home.
