Chapter 12 Raising Vegetable Seedlings

"Silver, how can there be so much silver?" Xu Han exclaimed in surprise. Then she quickly covered her mouth, realizing that she was living in the mountains and there were no other houses around, and then she put her hand down.

But she couldn't help but lower her voice and ask, "How do you have so much silver? Is being a hunter this lucrative?"

Seeing Xu Han's expression, Lu Chuan chuckled and said, "There are a total of 215 taels of silver here. 148 taels were left by my parents, and the remaining 67 taels are what I've saved from hunting over the years. Buy whatever you want. You don't need to worry about making money. I'll go to the deep mountains to hunt a few large game animals in the autumn and we can exchange them for money."

Listen to this! This is not a lot. You should know that an ordinary family can only save one or two taels of silver a year. This is enough for a family to save for a lifetime.

"Are all of these for me? I can buy whatever I want," Xu Han asked uncertainly.

"Hmm! Buy whatever you want. There are also two silver hairpins, a pair of silver bracelets, and a few pairs of earrings inside. These were left by my mother for her future daughter-in-law. Take a look and see if you like them. If you don't, you can melt them down and have them remade."

“If you give me all of this, aren’t you afraid I’ll squander it? Aren’t you afraid I’ll run away with the money?” Xu Han said.

"Based on my understanding of you, you won't squander the money. As for running away, you definitely won't, because without my guidance you would never find your way out. Besides, there are so many wild animals in the mountains, you simply can't survive on your own."

Uh! That doesn't sound like a nice thing to say!

"When it gets warmer in a few days, I'll take you to the county town. You can buy whatever you need at home then, and also buy yourself some clothes and jewelry. I don't know much about these things for women."

Hearing Lu Chuan say that, Xu Han became happy again. After all, what woman doesn't like to shop?

Besides, with this money, she can buy a lot of grain, so Xu Han won't have to worry anymore!

But how could I tell Lu Chuan? After all, I couldn't possibly buy so much grain on my own; we couldn't even get out of the mountains, let alone buy grain! I still had to rely on Lu Chuan for this.

Thinking about this, she frowned. Should she tell him she was from another time? Would he just burn her alive? She decided against it.

Or should we just say that there will be droughts, snowstorms, floods, and war in the next seven years? Would he believe us if we said that?

Lu Chuan noticed that Xu Han, who had just been being funny, suddenly frowned and fell into deep thought. He wondered if she didn't have enough money. It seemed he needed to earn more. He couldn't let his wife look down on him.

And so, the two of them fell asleep, each with their own worries.

The next morning, after getting up and having breakfast, Xu Han first prepared the dough. Previously, Hei Feng and Hei Dian had been eating dark flour buns made by Lu Chuan, which were made with unleavened dough and became very hard when they cooled down.

Having just finished eating, Xu Han took out the yeast from her spatial storage to steam some leavened buns for the two dogs. She'd make a large batch, enough for two days, since she'd been quite busy lately. Every little bit of time saved counted!

I scooped out three ladles of dark flour. I kneaded it into a large dough and waited for it to rise.

It's not that I'm unwilling to feed the dogs! It's just that the two dogs have such big appetites.

You have to understand that grain production is low these days, and many families are eating dark flour and cornbread. When wild vegetables come in, there will be even more vegetables than flour, so that the whole family can have enough to eat! Being full is always better than going hungry!

Then I took out some wheat flour and mixed in some cornmeal to make steamed corn and wheat flour buns. I kneaded the dough and set it aside to rest.

Arriving at the backyard, I took out the vegetable seeds that I had specifically asked Lu Chuan to buy, as well as the vegetable seeds I had ordered online. I sorted them, put them in plates, and took them to the backyard to start seedlings.

Lu Chuan had already prepared the seedbed for the seedlings! He had even made it a little bigger, but it still wasn't enough, so they asked Lu Chuan to make it even bigger.

Lu Chuan asked, puzzled, "Aren't you going to leave some for sweet potatoes and potatoes? Are you going to grow vegetables on this whole acre?"

Xu Han chuckled but didn't say anything, she really didn't know what to say. After thinking for a moment, she added, "Scatter the seeds a little more, and the seedlings will grow stronger."

Hearing Xu Han say this, Lu Chuan didn't say anything more. After all, he didn't know how to farm, so he decided to listen to Xu Han.

So they started helping Xu Han cultivate seedlings. Xu Han divided the land into plots, putting one type of seed in each plot. After removing the packaging, no one knew which type of seed it was. Anyway, the seedlings in the same plot would be planted together.

This time, a large number of seedlings were cultivated. Pumpkins, winter melons, eggplants, peppers, cucumbers, tomatoes, green beans, and other vegetables were purchased from Luchuan County.

Xu Han also bought a lot of fruit tomatoes and large tomatoes, various peppers, fruit cucumbers, and other things online. There were also honeydew melons and the like.

These were originally intended to be taken back to my hometown for my mom to grow, but they ended up here. I wonder how my parents are doing now; I miss them so much!

After scattering the seeds, split the bamboo poles into thin strips, make a small arched shed, and cover it with an old tarpaulin from home. The weather is still a bit cold, so we need to keep it warm for the seedlings to sprout.

I covered it with some thatch, and after the seedlings sprout, I just need to open both ends to let in some ventilation in the morning and evening.

There are still some seeds left, which are various kinds of vegetable seeds. We can plant them directly when the weather gets warmer.

After finishing, Lu Chuan continued tidying up the ground. Xu Han went to sort out the dried tattered clothes and started pasting more cloth soles on them, making several pairs of cloth shoes for herself and Lu Chuan.

First, trim the old clothes and sort them by size. Fabric isn't cheap, so we can't waste it.

First, take a bowl, pour in some flour, add water and stir in one direction until there are no lumps. Then pour in boiling water to scald the flour. This scalded dough is very sticky. In my hometown, this scalded dough paste is used to paste Spring Festival couplets; it's very firm.

Then take it outside to cool slightly. Then move the table out, find a smooth board, and sprinkle water on it. I remember when I was little, my mom would take down the door panels from the house and use them to paste shoe soles!

Sew large pieces of fabric onto the board, press them down to make them adhere to the board, and then brush on the paste, spreading it evenly, otherwise there will be bubbles and it won't stick.

The batter shouldn't be too thick; a thin layer is enough, otherwise it will be difficult to poke with a needle later. Four layers are enough for the shoe sole.

Don't waste the leftover fabric scraps; just make small ones that can be cut to the size of shoe soles.

It wasn't ready by lunchtime, because Lu Chuan had ruined too many clothes!

I rubbed my aching back and went to the kitchen to make lunch.

Lu Chuan returned shortly afterward, washed his hands, and began helping Xu Han start a fire.

I had a simple lunch today: stir-fried shredded potatoes, scallion and egg stir-fry, and brown rice as usual, but I added some sweet potato, which made it sweet and delicious.

After finishing their meal, Lu Chuan went into the bamboo forest to cut bamboo. Xu Han continued pasting shoe soles.

Fortunately, there were a few smooth, large wooden planks in the tool shed, probably used for drying things before.

Otherwise, it really won't be enough. After pasting it on, take it out to dry. Once it's dry, you can cut the shoe soles.
