In the evening, the two ate a hot pot. Because the hot pot had a strong smell, Xu Han was afraid of making the room smell of hot pot, so they ate in the kitchen, where they lit a charcoal brazier to keep it hot.
"We can finish dealing with the pine cones by tomorrow. Are we going into the mountains the day after tomorrow?" Xu Han asked.
"Let's go into the mountains! I want to dig lotus roots. Didn't you say before that lotus roots can be used to make lotus root starch? And lotus root stir-fries are delicious, I quite like them."
“Digging lotus roots is too cold, let’s forget about it! We already have kudzu roots to make kudzu root powder. We won’t be short of food. If we really want some, we can just buy it!” Xu Han said, disagreeing.
"It's alright, I'm in great shape! I don't get sick that easily, and even if I do, I'll recover quickly, then we'll have more dishes to eat. Don't worry! I won't dig too much, just enough to eat." Lu Chuan reassured Xu Han.
Seeing that she couldn't persuade Lu Chuan, Xu Han stopped talking. The two of them had the same stubborn temper; once they made up their minds, no one could dissuade them, and they would keep thinking about it if they didn't go.
After dinner, Lu Chuan took a hot bath. Xu Han felt she wasn't dirty and didn't want to take a bath, but she insisted that Lu Chuan take one so she could get rid of the cold from her body.
The next morning, after tidying up the house, we continued smashing pine cones. Today, we waited until noon to let Lu Chuan wash the kudzu roots, at least the midday sun would be shining, making it feel a bit warmer than in the morning.
Lu Chuan washed the kudzu root, while Xu Han continued processing the remaining pine nuts. By sunset, they had finally finished cracking all the pine nuts, but they still hadn't removed all the shells!
Lu Chuan finally finished washing all the kudzu roots. Xu Han collected the kudzu roots and put them in the cellar. After dinner, the two of them worked overtime together to process the smashed pine cone shells.
After cleaning all the pine cone shells, it was already late. The two quickly cleaned up the house and put the cleaned pine nuts into their spatial storage.
Since they haven't been dried yet, I'm worried that the pine nuts inside might spoil if they're packed together. It's safer to store them in a separate space.
The next day, the two got up early again and set off towards the pond where the lotus roots were. They dug for yams along the way, hoping to reach the cave before dark. Otherwise, it would be too late to dig for lotus roots.
It would be better to take advantage of the time and dig for yams while walking! That way, we wouldn't waste the day.
When they arrived at the cave, it was still early, so Xu Han wondered if she could make Lu Chuan a set of clothes for digging lotus roots.
In ancient times, there were no such things as water trousers for digging lotus roots, but Xu Han had cowhide! So she wondered if she could use cowhide to make a garment similar to water trousers for Lu Chuan.
This was the idea Xu Han came up with before setting off, but there wasn't enough time to make it. She could only bring the necessary items and work overtime tonight to finish it.
Xu Han took out the kneaded cowhide, cut it according to the shape of the water pants, made it into the shape of overalls, and then sewed it together.
Xu Han made the straps very high, afraid that the water would be too deep and get inside the clothes. But if they were too high, she wouldn't be able to put them on. So she made the shoulder straps longer so she could tie them in knots. Although it doesn't look good, at least it's wearable.
After it was finished, Lu Chuan put it on and tried it on. It was wearable, but it looked rather strange.
Xu Han laughed so hard she couldn't stand up straight, and Lu Chuan even struck a strange pose to match her.
"Not bad, not bad, I think it's pretty good." The model herself was quite satisfied with Xu Han's work.
After playing around for a while, it was getting late, so the two went to rest.
The next morning, after breakfast, Lu Chuan and Xu Han went to the pond.
Upon arriving at the location, seeing that the water wasn't very deep, Lu Chuan tried going down into the pond and began searching for lotus roots according to Xu Han's instructions.
Following the roots, I felt my way to a lotus root and pulled it out. Because of my lack of experience, and the lotus root being quite brittle, I broke it on the first try. I rinsed it briefly in water and placed it on a wooden basin nearby.
"How are you? Are you cold? Are your pants leaking? Can you feel it?" Xu Han asked repeatedly.
"It's not cold, and your pants aren't leaking. Look at this." Lu Chuan took out another lotus root, this time carefully and gently without breaking it, and held it up for Xu Han to see.
"Okay, then you can explore here! I'll dig for yams nearby, call me if you need anything!"
After saying that, Xu Han put several more large wooden basins in the pond for Lu Chuan to use to store lotus roots, while she led the dogs to look for kudzu roots and yams on the slope by the pond.
There was only one pair of waders, and Xu Han couldn't help much, but she couldn't just sit idle either! So she found something to do for herself.
Xu Han had just found a yam and was about to start digging when she heard Lu Chuan's voice.
Xu Han quickly responded and walked over. It turned out that the wooden basin was already full of lotus roots and needed to be taken out.
"Wow, you're pretty fast! You've filled it up so quickly," Xu Han said.
“The lotus roots inside haven’t been dug up yet, and they’re very big and plentiful,” Lu Chuan said, handing the basin to the shore.
Xu Han touched the basin and put it directly into her spatial storage. When she took it out again, she placed the lotus roots on the straw mat and then put the basin back into the pond. Lu Chuan continued digging.
After harvesting the lotus roots, Xu Han went back to dig her own yams. To make sure she could dig for a longer time this time, Xu Han gave Lu Chuan several more wooden basins, giving him all the basins she had brought this time.
As the sun began to set, Xu Han came to find Lu Chuan. Lu Chuan had already dug up a lot of lotus roots. The two of them gathered the lotus roots and then went to a nearby stream to wash them clean.
It was getting dark, and Xu Han ignored Lu Chuan's objections, put on gloves, and helped wash the lotus roots.
Pour the lotus root directly into the river, rinse off the surface mud with water, and the white and tender lotus root sections will be revealed. They look so plump that you just want to eat them right away.
The two finally finished washing all the lotus roots before it got dark, and then headed back to the cave.
Back in the cave, Xu Han took out a folding bathtub from her spatial storage, heated water, and let Lu Chuan take a hot bath to get rid of the chill.
Despite Lu Chuan's objections, she forced him to drink two bowls of ginger soup. Under the intimidating gaze of his wife, Lu Chuan reluctantly drank the ginger soup.
It has to be said that Lu Chuan, who seems like a mature and reliable person, sometimes has a childlike side. When he didn't like the ginger soup, he even started to act like a child.
He was only twenty years old, which wasn't considered old in modern times, especially since Xu Han was older than him...
The two then ate a bowl of hot dumpling soup, along with eggs and flatbread. After they were full, they rested.
