Chapter 164 Beef Jerky

Fortunately, Lu Chuan and Xu Han lived deep in the mountains, and no matter how far they ventured, they didn't dare to go to where the two lived.

After all, the journey was too long and time was limited. However, just in case, Xu Han and Lu Chuan put the boat into their spatial storage after arriving at their destination.

To avoid being discovered by those with ulterior motives who suspect that a boat is moored here and that someone lives here.

Finally, Lu Chuan stayed behind and camouflaged the path the two of them often took. Fortunately, they would be going down the mountain less and less often, and the path would gradually be covered by vines.

When Xu Han got home, it was still early and she didn't have anything to do, so she thought she would make some beef jerky while the temperature was still not too high and the sun was shining.

Xu Han took out some lean beef from her spatial storage and cut it into finger-thick pieces along the grain.

Because I wanted to make more, it took me a long time to cut the beef.

Just as everything was cut up, Lu Chuan returned, and it was getting dark.

Place the beef into three different large wooden bowls, and then add onions, ginger, white wine, spices, salt, and sugar.

Add some Sichuan peppercorns, peppercorns, and chili powder to one of the wooden basins to make spicy beef jerky.

The other wooden basin contains five-spice powder to make it have a five-spice flavor.

The last dish is made by adding cumin powder to create a cumin flavor.

There are three different flavors. I made a lot of the spicy flavor, while I only made a little of the five-spice and cumin flavors, since Lu Chuan and Xu Han both prefer spicy flavors.

When marinating beef jerky, be sure to knead it repeatedly for a while so that the marinated beef jerky will be more flavorful.

After kneading, let it marinate outside for a while, then put it back into the space when you go to sleep. Tomorrow you can take it out and dry it directly in the sun for two or three days.

After drying, put it in a steamer and steam it until cooked. Then let it air dry to remove some of the surface moisture, and the beef jerky is ready to eat.

After preparing the beef jerky, Xu Han immediately started cooking dinner. Tonight's dinner would be a simple home-cooked meal.

After dinner, the temperature is no longer cold, and it gets dark much later than before. I can't fall asleep, so I'll take care of the violet plants in the space first.

When digging up Viola yedoensis, the roots are dug up together, and there are also thatch and other grasses mixed in.

Therefore, it is quite troublesome to process. Each one needs to be picked clean, the roots pinched off, and other mixed things cleaned up, which takes a lot of time.

"Let's go dig up some more violets tomorrow! We only have a little bit left from last time, enough for one or two more meals," Xu Han said as she picked the vegetables.

“Okay, let’s go together after breakfast tomorrow. If we dig for two days straight, there won’t be much left after we process it.” Lu Chuan also quite liked this dish and particularly agreed with Xu Han’s suggestion.

After finalizing their plans for tomorrow, the two continued picking wild vegetables until they felt sleepy, at which point they went to rest.

The next morning, after having breakfast, Lu Chuan and Xu Han went out together, with the dogs running ahead of them.

“The dogs have been cooped up all winter. Let’s take them for a trip in the mountains when we have some time in a few days!” Xu Han said.

"It's time to take them out hunting; they've gotten so fat this winter they can barely run anymore," Lu Chuan said, showing no mercy to his greedy dogs.

Although I complain that the dogs have gotten fat, I still give them a lot of food at every meal, afraid that they won't be full and will go hungry.

The two walked and chatted, and soon they found a large patch of violets. They put down their baskets and started digging.

"These violets are so big! They're so big and tender," Xu Han said to Lu Chuan as she dug them up.

“It’s quite big; you could fill a whole basket from this one patch!” Lu Chuan said without looking up.

Lu Chuan has been going to dig for wild vegetables with Xu Han every day recently, and he has gradually come to appreciate the fun of digging for wild vegetables. The two of them are more interested in digging than eating them.

Xu Han suddenly remembered that it was the season for eating elm seeds, so she asked...

"Lu Chuan, are there any elm trees in the mountains? The kind that bloom in spring with flowers that look like copper coins, round ones."

"Is it a pale yellow color?" Lu Chuan asked after thinking carefully.

"Yes, have you seen them?" Xu Han hadn't eaten elm seeds last year, and she didn't seem to have seen them in the mountains either, which is why she asked Lu Chuan.

"There seem to be a few in the mountains, but they're quite far from here. Are they edible?"

"Yes, you can eat them. You can steam them or make elm seed buns," Xu Han said.

"Let's go deep into the mountains tomorrow and look for some! There are lots of wild vegetables in the mountains, so we can pick some."

After thinking for a moment, Xu Han said, "That's fine. Let's go tomorrow and stay in the mountains for a few more days."

"Okay! That's fine." Then the two of them stopped talking and continued digging for wild vegetables.

After they finished digging, Lu Chuan and Xu Han continued walking together. When they passed by a stream, Lu Chuan called out to Xu Han, "Look, is that wild celery over there on the other side of the river? It's a huge patch."

After checking and confirming, Xu Han said, "It really is! But how do we get there?"

"The water ahead is shallower, so we can walk across over there. Don't you have some waders in your space? Wear them, and I'll just cross over."

The water was still a bit cold, and Lu Chuan didn't want Xu Han to touch it, but Xu Han was definitely going there anyway, so he could only make this suggestion.

Hearing Lu Chuan say this, Xu Han did not object. After putting on her waders, the two walked over together.

When we arrived, we found that it was a huge patch of water celery! And it was all freshly sprouted, so tender and juicy.

Seeing this, Xu Han made no attempt to hide her excitement and immediately began picking water celery.

The aroma of the water celery that had been pinched off was even stronger, and the air was instantly filled with its scent.

This large patch of water celery filled three baskets completely. Once home, I simply bundled it with straw and neatly stacked it in the storage space.

Since they had already crossed to this side of the river, the two decided to continue searching for wild vegetables.

Whether it's water celery, violet, or even wild garlic, as long as they're growing well, they're all harvested.

When she got tired at noon, Xu Han took out her food from her spatial storage, washed her hands in the river, and then found a shady spot to eat lunch.

The sun is still very strong and the temperature is not low, so the two of them are wearing only light clothing when they go out to work.
