Chapter 17 Buying Cloth

After the two finished eating their noodles, Lu Chuan took Xu Han to the restaurant where they had previously sold their game.

Because living creatures cannot be placed in the space, if they are put inside and then taken out, they will die, so prey cannot be put in the space.

Since we bought too many live animals, and it was inconvenient to carry them around, we had no choice but to put the prey in the backyard of the restaurant first.

The restaurant owner greeted Lu Chuan warmly upon his arrival. Lu Chuan and the owner were quite familiar with each other, as Lu Chuan frequently sold his game there. After exchanging pleasantries, the two left the restaurant together.

Lu Chuan first took Xu Han to the clinic and asked the old doctor to take her pulse. He insisted that she hadn't taken good care of herself after her previous illness and wanted to see the doctor again. Only after the doctor took her pulse did he feel relieved!

Xu Han didn't want to go at first! But when Lu Chuan said that since she was already there, it wouldn't be much trouble, she agreed to go!

The two arrived at the clinic, which was nearly empty since it was lunchtime. The young apprentice doctor greeted them warmly, inviting them to sit down before going inside to fetch the doctor.

The doctor on duty, Dr. Zhang, was an elderly man with a goatee. He was an old acquaintance of Lu Chuan, who had previously come to sell herbs.

Doctor Zhang first took Xu Han's pulse and said, "Young lady, you recovered very well from your last illness, but due to the severe depletion of your body and frequent contact with cold water, your uterus is quite cold. It is not advisable for you to conceive in the next two years. You should take good care of yourself first, otherwise the chances of a difficult childbirth later will be very high."

Upon hearing this, Lu Chuan hurriedly said, "Please, doctor, give me some proper care."

"I'll prescribe some medicine for her to take when her period comes, which will help alleviate some of her pain! As for the tonics, she doesn't need to drink them normally; just add them to the prescription for regulating her period. She should pay more attention to her diet, as food is better than medicine."

"Then I'll trouble you to prescribe some medicine," Xu Han replied.

"One thing to be careful about is to avoid touching cold water and eating raw or cold food in the future," Dr. Zhang added with concern.

The two then asked Dr. Zhang to prescribe some commonly used medicines for treating colds and diarrhea before leaving the pharmacy.

From then on, Lu Chuan wouldn't let Xu Han touch a drop of cold water. Of course, that's a story for another time.

She then found a well-regarded general store and went in to ransack it.

You don't need to buy seasonings, but you'll need to buy quite a few odds and ends like pots, pans, and bowls.

I bought four plates, four bowls, two noodle bowls, two soup bowls, plus matching chopsticks and spoons.

After taking these, I went to the side and bought a few ceramic jars for storing rouge and face powder, so I could squeeze some skincare products out of my storage space to use when I got back.

I also grabbed a few larger ceramic jars to store shampoo, conditioner, and other similar products. I also bought some oil paper and other supplies that we were short on at home!

She also bought two large wooden basins and a large wooden bucket. These would be essential for cleaning later. After buying a whole bunch of miscellaneous items, Xu Han bargained again, finally spending 530 coins on these things. The wooden basins and buckets were the most expensive.

The two couldn't carry all the things, so they asked the waiter to help them into a deserted alley. They only said that they had discussed it with their families and would meet there later.

Taking advantage of the absence of others, Xu Han quickly stored the items into her spatial storage. Then the two entered the fabric shop.

They needed to buy some white and black cloth to make shoes. Lu Chuan led Xu Han to the cloth shop where he had previously bought clothes for her.

The shop owner must have recognized Lu Chuan, who had bought two sets of clothes earlier, because she warmly greeted them as they went in.

Xu Han told the shop owner her requirements, and the shop owner quickly brought out what Xu Han needed: a bolt of black cloth and a bolt of white cloth, both linen. Each bolt cost 380 wen.

Looking around, I saw other colored fabrics nearby, so I bought some as well. Linen is sturdy and durable, suitable for wearing in the mountains. I bought a bolt each of light brown, navy blue, and gray to make clothes for Lu Chuan.

I also bought a bolt of cyan, lotus root pink, and light blue to make clothes for myself.

A total of eight horses cost 3040 coins.

He turned around and asked the shopkeeper if he had any cotton. The shopkeeper quickly replied, "Yes, yes, yes! My cotton is white and soft. Let me show you!"

He was secretly overjoyed, thinking that the weather would soon be warmer and that he would soon be stuck with all this cotton. Judging from Xu Han's generous attitude, he was sure he could sell it as long as the price was right.

The proprietress hurriedly told the waiter to bring out the cotton. Seeing that Xu Han had bought so much stuff, the proprietress even changed her address, "Madam! Look at this cotton, it's all newly arrived this winter, all good stuff."

Xu Han looked at the cotton and found it to be quite good, but without showing it, she said to the shop owner, "This is last year's cotton. If it's left to sit for a while, it will definitely turn yellow and won't fetch a good price! I wonder how much you're planning to sell it for per pound now? If the price is right, I'll take it all!"

Upon hearing this, the proprietress knew that the young woman was telling the truth, and she stopped charging the previous price.

He hurriedly said, "There are still about 100 catties of cotton here. If you want it all, I will sell it to you at a discount, at 40 wen per catty."

Xu Han looked at Lu Chuan, who nodded and said, "I can take them all, but the price is too high. The proprietress isn't really trying to sell to me! How about this: I'll take them all for 35 coins per catty."

Hearing Xu Han's words and seeing how many things she had bought, the proprietress didn't want to lose such a big customer. So she nodded in agreement. "Alright! 35 coins it is. Hope you'll come back to patronize our shop often!"

“Of course,” Xu Han replied.

Just then, the waiter brought out some stained fabrics from the backyard storeroom and asked curiously, "What's wrong with these fabrics? Why are they all stained?"

When the proprietress saw Xu Han asking about the fabrics, she replied, "When we went to buy these last year, it rained, and the tarpaulin wasn't properly covering the goods. The whole cart of fabric was ruined by the rain, and we lost a lot of money."

"Then why don't you sell them?" Xu Han asked.

"The rest of this is all cotton cloth; the linen was sold off cheaply. Ordinary families can't afford cotton, and who in their right mind would buy this rain-damaged cotton? It's too cheap! I can't bear to sell it! So it's been sitting in the warehouse all this time! Today the sun's out, so I'm taking it out to air it. Ugh, seeing all this makes me feel terrible!"

Xu Han glanced at Lu Chuan, and Lu Chuan instantly understood what Xu Han meant, nodding to her.

Xu Han hurriedly said, "Shopkeeper, why don't you sell it to me at a lower price? You're just sitting here holding onto it anyway, so you might as well exchange it for some money to buy new materials."

“If you really want it, Madam, then I will give it to you at the price of linen.”

The proprietress thought the lady was right; she had misjudged the situation. Selling it cheaply would at least recoup some of the losses. Although she had lost a lot, it was still better than holding onto it.

There are 20 bolts of cloth in total, enough for Xu Han and Lu Chuan to live on for seven years.

In this way, Xu Han bought a total of 8 bolts of linen and 20 bolts of cotton cloth at the cloth shop. The proprietress also readily charged her a flat price for some fine cotton cloth. In addition, she bought 106 catties of cotton, which cost her 14 taels and 350 wen.
