Chapter 179 Picking Wild Vegetables in the Valley

"Alright, alright, let's go pick some wild vegetables." Actually, ever since we came back from the valley last time, Xu Han had been thinking about the wild vegetables there!

The wild amaranth there grows plump and tender; even at this time of year, it's still not old at all!

That said, the temperature inside the valley is indeed a bit lower than here, probably because there's more water and it's more shady!

The two of them, who had agreed to meet, went to bed after dinner to get some rest so they could pick wild vegetables the next day and try to bring back all the wild vegetables in the valley.

The next morning, the two set off for the valley in the morning light.

As soon as they arrived, Xu Han couldn't wait to start picking wild amaranth. She only picked the tips, as the lower leaves were too old and wouldn't taste good.

You can pinch them one by one, the snapping sound is incredibly stress-relieving, and you just can't stop.

After finishing snipping everything in this area, Xu Han began searching for the next location.

Lu Chuan hunted nearby the whole time, while Heidian and Fantuan followed Xu Han closely, just in case a snake suddenly appeared and they were bitten unexpectedly.

But as expected, an unexpected event still occurred. After all, there are a lot of snakes here. Last time I came to Luchuan, I caught four large snakes, but fortunately, none of them were poisonous.

"Woof woof woof woof woof woof!" Suddenly, the black dot barked loudly in one direction.

Lu Chuan heard the noise and quickly ran over.

As soon as I got closer, I saw a large snake, as thick as a wrist, flicking its tongue as it approached.

Xu Han was so frightened that she stood still. The snakes from last time had left her with a serious psychological trauma. Now, just seeing these things made her scalp tingle. She didn't want to face them at all and just wanted to pretend to be dead and not look at them.

Because of the presence of Black Dot and Rice Ball near Xu Han, the giant snake dared not approach, and the two sides remained deadlocked until Lu Chuan arrived.

Lu Chuan acted swiftly, striking the snake directly at its vital point. In a short while, the snake stopped reacting.

"Alright, it's alright now. This snake isn't poisonous either, don't be afraid," Lu Chuan comforted Xu Han.

"Luckily there are black spots, otherwise I would definitely have been bitten. Even if it's not poisonous, being bitten would still hurt a lot," Xu Han said with a wry smile.

"It's alright, it's alright, I'll have Tangyuan come over with you too." Lu Chuan said, then called Tangyuan over.

Then Lu Chuan tapped around with the stick, and seeing that there was nothing there, he felt relieved.

Seeing this, Xu Han stopped being coy and continued picking her wild vegetables.

They continued like this until the sun began to set, when the two finally headed home, their harvest plentiful.

Time flies! It's already mid-July in the blink of an eye.

During this time, Xu Han and Lu Chuan were both busy with their own things, doing their tasks in an orderly manner.

Lu Chuan continued his daily routine of taking the dogs up the mountain to hunt, and in his spare time, he would take Xu Han to fish for crayfish and pick wild vegetables.

Xu Han was responsible for watering the vegetables every day and cleaning up all the muddy things.

In my spare time, I cooked a lot of potatoes and other things. I was busy every day and never had a moment to rest.

That evening, after dinner, Lu Chuan suddenly said, "We haven't gone down the mountain in a long time. I want to go down and take a look."

Xu Han was stunned for a moment upon hearing this. After thinking about it carefully, she realized that it had been more than two months since she had come down the mountain, and she wondered what the situation was like down there.

Since Master Xuan Yi gave them his instructions, Lu Chuan and Xu Han rarely went down the mountain and lived a completely secluded life, shutting themselves in their own little world every day.

So he said, "We should go and take a look. We don't know what the situation is down the mountain. The summer harvest is long over now, and we don't know how the harvest was or whether it was enough for ordinary people to survive until next year."

“Yes! That’s what I was thinking too, but you don’t need to go this time. I can go by myself. I’m not going to buy anything anyway, and it’ll be easier for me to go alone. It’ll also be easier to get away if something happens,” Lu Chuan said.

Xu Han didn't object to Lu Chuan's words, knowing that it was for her own good, so she agreed.

"Then how will you get there? Can we take a boat now?" Xu Han asked.

"I went to check it out a few days ago, and the water in the river was too shallow; the boats couldn't be rowed anymore."

"So I'll have to walk there myself, but that will take several days round trip, and I definitely won't be able to come back on the same day. Are you okay staying at home by yourself?" Lu Chuan asked worriedly.

"I'm fine, I'll just stay home and not go out. Besides, I have so many dogs to keep me company!" Xu Han said with a smile.

"Okay, I'll try to come back as soon as possible."

"Take Black Wind and Edamame with you! I'll feel more at ease with them by your side," Xu Han continued.

“I’ll just take Black Wind with me! Bringing two would attract too much attention. In times of famine, who doesn’t tighten their belts? Taking two dogs out at once, especially two fat and strong ones, would definitely make people resentful, and it would save me from unnecessary trouble,” Lu Chuan said.

Xu Han thought about it and realized that although her dogs didn't eat particularly well, they were always full at every meal, and their fur looked shiny, so they didn't look like they hadn't eaten.

In this day and age, everyone is struggling financially. If you see that you are not even as well off as a dog, it's hard not to have some wicked thoughts.

Having figured all this out, Xu Han didn't press the matter. She then stood up and said, "Then I'll prepare some food for you, and some bamboo tubes and such."

"Okay! I'll go first thing tomorrow morning and try to come back as early as possible. Stay home by yourself and don't wander off."

"I understand." Then she started preparing the things she would bring for Lu Chuan tomorrow.

Neither Lu Chuan nor Xu Han slept well that night...

The next morning, just as dawn was breaking, Xu Han got up to check what Lu Chuan needed to bring.

Bring along some bamboo tubes, dried food, and dried meat, and also a change of clothes.

The two said goodbye reluctantly. Lu Chuan and Xu Han hadn't been apart all year and were together every day. It was really hard to get used to going away for a few days.

"Don't wander off while you're home, okay? Wait for me to come back. Take the dogs with you when you go out to get water, and don't go out if it gets a little late, understand?" Lu Chuan continued to nag and give instructions.

"I only know that, so I'll stay at home. On the contrary, you don't know the situation down the mountain. Be careful," Xu Han said to Lu Chuan, also worried about him.

"Okay! I understand, I'm off then." With that, he slung his bundle over his shoulder and left the courtyard with Black Wind.

Seeing that Lu Chuan had walked away, Xu Han turned around and went to the backyard. She couldn't sleep now, and it was already broad daylight, so she decided to go to the backyard and pick some vegetables first!
