Time flies, and it was already early August. Early that morning, Xu Han was picking chili peppers in the wasteland outside when she was attracted by the insects on the ground.
Xu Han looked closely and realized something was wrong, very wrong, but she couldn't quite put her finger on it.
If I can't figure it out, I'll stop thinking about it and continue picking chili peppers. I also can't waste the sweet potato vines; I have to pick those too.
After picking them, Xu Han returned to the yard. For the past two days, Lu Chuan had been at home trimming bamboo thorns, preparing them to stick outside the fence. In this special period, they could also deter some ill-intentioned people or large prey.
"You're back! You picked so many today!" Lu Chuan asked while peeling bamboo thorns.
"Today's harvest is a little better than last time, probably because the weather is gradually getting cooler! There are a lot more vegetables and fruits now than in the height of summer!" Xu Han said while pouring water.
After finishing the water in his cup, he asked, "Are these bamboo thorns enough? Do we need to go back to the bamboo forest and cut some more?"
"It's not necessary for now. After we finish trimming the bamboo splinters today, we'll dig holes around the perimeter of the yard tomorrow so we can insert the bamboo splinters and provide some protection."
"Yes! It's too hot. Don't rush to dig. Let's dig a little bit each day before the sun comes out, and we'll be done soon. Even though it's already August, the daytime temperature is still very high, so be careful not to get heatstroke," Xu Han said.
"I understand. There's no rush. We have enough time."
Xu Han then changed the subject, saying, "Master Xuan Yi said he would come to see us in the second half of the year, but it's already August, and we don't know when he will arrive."
"We can't get in touch with him either, we can only wait and see, maybe something has come up and delayed him!"
"Maybe!" Xu Han said before going into the kitchen to start preparing lunch.
It's too hot, and Xu Han wants to eat cold noodles. She's already finished all the ones she made in her space, so she wants to make some more since she has time today.
First, let's make a dough. Since the amount made each time is relatively large, to avoid the trouble of making it one at a time, Xu Han also made a big dough today.
Let the kneaded dough rest for a while, about half an hour. You can knead it a few more times during the resting process, which will make it more chewy and delicious.
Once the dough has risen, put it into a large wooden basin, fill it with water, and then start washing the dough.
Knead the dough in the water continuously until the gluten is combined and no longer separates. Then, transfer the dough to a small bowl and wash it until there is no more water left and the water becomes clear.
After washing your face, let the water sit for a while, about three or four hours, before you can do it.
Xu Han then made the gluten, added a little baking soda to it, mixed it well, and let it rest for a while.
After the dough has risen, steam it for 15 minutes. Once cooked, cut it into small pieces and it's ready to eat.
At noon, Xu Han made a cold gluten salad, topped with sesame paste and garlic sauce, and mixed with some green beans. It was especially delicious and fragrant.
After lunch, the two did not rest. They hadn't had much work to do in the evenings lately and had been going to bed early. Since they weren't sleepy today, they made bamboo skewers together.
When the temperature dropped to around three or four o'clock in the afternoon, Xu Han began making cold noodles.
First, take out the large stainless steel plate that you bought earlier, brush it with oil, and set it aside for later use.
Then pour off the clear water on top of the settled noodle water, stir the noodle water at the bottom evenly, and scoop two spoonfuls into a large plate.
Shake it once, put it in a pot that has been boiling, heat and steam until cooked, then take it out and put it in cold water to cool. Once the cold noodles have cooled down, you can take them out.
The resulting cold noodles are very chewy and won't break. After making one sheet, repeat the process until all the dough and water are used up.
By the time Xu Han finished making all the cold noodles, it was already quite late, and the sky had turned dark.
Take out a few sheets of cold skin noodles, roll them together, cut them into long strips, then cut the gluten you made at noon into small pieces and put them together. Add the garlic water and chili oil that you prepared in advance, mix well, and you can start eating.
You can also add some of your favorite side dishes to the cold noodles, such as shredded cucumber or bean sprouts. They taste pretty good together and will give you a different texture.
"How was the cold noodles you made today?" Xu Han asked.
"Great, it's delicious! It feels even chewier than the last time I made it! Looks like my wife's cooking skills have improved again," Lu Chuan said while taking a big bite of the cold noodles.
"I also think today's tastes better than the last one!"
Xu Han took out the ice jelly from her spatial storage, added the toppings, and prepared it to cool herself down after eating the spicy cold noodles.
After handing Lu Chuan a bowl of ice jelly, she started eating it herself.
After finishing their meal, they continued processing the remaining bamboo. The two were determined to remove all the bamboo splinters today, otherwise it would take up another whole day.
“Let’s take some time to clean up our parents’ room! We don’t know when the Taoist priest will come, so let’s clean it up in advance so we have a place to stay.” Lu Chuan said while peeling bamboo thorns.
“Okay, I’ll start cleaning up tomorrow. It’s full of miscellaneous items. Let’s clean it up and put it in the old woodshed! We can also clean up the mugwort and bamboo there.”
"Okay, you can do this! You're more meticulous than me."
"Okay! We'll pack our parents' things in boxes and put them in the storeroom! I see you still have two big boxes you made that you haven't used yet! They should be big enough to hold them all," Xu Han asked.
"Sure, you can handle that."
Around 10 p.m., the two finally finished removing all the bamboo splinters, cleaned the ground, and then went to wash up and rest.
A good night's sleep...
The next day, after having breakfast early in the morning, Xu Han prepared to go to Lu's parents' room to pack her things.
Actually, there wasn't much to pack. Xu Han had already sorted and put everything away beforehand; all that was needed was to move it back to the woodshed.
After Xu Han put everything into her spatial storage, she went to the woodshed to clean up the mugwort and bamboo inside.
The bamboo can be placed directly into the woodshed, which is currently mostly empty and can easily accommodate the bamboo.
The remaining mugwort was all bundled up and hung in a corner outside the warehouse, where it was sheltered from the rain and could be stored there temporarily.
