Chapter 194 Let's Plant Bamboo Splinters Together

I was very unhappy because I had gone through a series of selections and underwent extremely rigorous training before I finally became the Taoist master's disciple.

How come Lu Chuan was able to become an apprentice so easily?

However, Yunhua quickly put the matter out of her mind, because the aroma of the food attracted her to breakfast again.

"Dinner is ready! Everyone, go wash your hands and come eat!" Xu Han shouted.

Today's breakfast consisted of sweet potato and rice porridge and egg pancakes.

Xu Han also boiled some eggs and salted duck eggs, along with the chili sauce and pickles she had made beforehand, making it a particularly generous spread. Since there were many people and everyone had different tastes, Xu Han specially prepared a variety of pickles so that anyone could take whatever they wanted.

"These pickled cucumbers are delicious!" Yunhua exclaimed.

Hearing this, the others quickly tried a piece as well. Grandpa Zhao said, "It's crisp and delicious, with a sour taste and a rich soy sauce flavor. It's really good."

"If you like it, eat more. I also made a lot of other pickled vegetables. I'll let you try them another day."

"Okay, okay, can we take some with us when we leave? I won't take it for free, I'll pay you." Yunhua said while eating.

"If you're not worried about it getting sour and causing diarrhea in the heat, I think the girl would probably get it for you," the Taoist priest joked.

Everyone else burst into laughter. Yunhua thought about it and realized it made sense; it really couldn't be stored away in such hot weather, so she had no choice but to give up.

Immediately discard the idea that I couldn't take it with me, and instead start eating heartily. Since I can't take it with me, I might as well eat as much as I can now!

Everyone enjoyed this simple breakfast. After breakfast, Lu Chuan led Yun Hua, the Taoist priest, and Grandpa Zhao to the outer wall to stick bamboo spikes.

Although the Taoist priest has arrived and his martial arts skills have increased significantly, we still need to take precautions. We can't just give up halfway through!

Things should always be done thoroughly, and this won't take much effort, with so many people involved! I estimate we can finish inserting all the bamboo splinters by this morning.

They went outside to stick bamboo splinters, while Xu Han and Zhao Yunyun stayed in the yard to clean up together.

Zhao Yunyun had never done any work before, and there were many things she didn't know how to do, nor had she ever had the opportunity to do them. So she followed Xu Han and learned little by little.

Seeing that she was very interested, Xu Han patiently taught her. The two of them first went into the room, took out the quilts to air them out, and then put the clothes that they had washed and dried the day before into the room.

Then Xu Han took Zhao Yunyun to the backyard to feed the chickens, ducks, geese, and corn.

“The drought is quite severe now, and there’s hardly any grass left, so the corn is eating the dry hay that was previously growing there. We can just put it directly into its feeding trough,” Xu Han said.

After saying that, he went to the water tank to fetch water, added water for the livestock, and cleaned the pen. Then the two of them returned to the front yard together.

With more people, there's more food to eat, and there's still plenty of time. Xu Han taught Zhao Yunyun how to pick and chop vegetables. Although Zhao Yunyun had never done it before, she was very willing to learn and did it very seriously, but she was just too slow.

These tasks were quite simple for Zhao Yunyun, as she often worked with the herbs, only the methods were different, but washing and cutting were still easy to learn.

The two chatted as they prepared the food, and time flew by. Just as they finished cooking, the others returned from picking bamboo thorns.

"Why are you working until this late today? It's so hot, why didn't you come back earlier?" Xu Han asked while serving the dishes.

"Yunhua and Xiaochuan said they were going hunting in the mountains this afternoon so they could have some extra food for dinner, so they hurriedly stuck all the bamboo thorns in," Grandpa Zhao replied.

Upon hearing this, Xu Han immediately complained to Lu Chuan, "Really, you two are young and it's fine if you get a little sun, but why did you let Grandpa Zhao and the Taoist priest come with you? Why didn't you let them come back earlier? The sun is so strong, what if they get heatstroke?"

Lu Chuan was so scolded that he didn't dare to say a word. He wanted to defend himself, but seeing his wife's expression, he decided to let it go and not invite further criticism.

Grandpa Zhao chimed in, "It was the two old men who insisted on coming along. Xiao Chuan told us to come back early, but we refused. Don't underestimate us just because we're old; this bit of sun is nothing to us."

The Taoist priest chimed in, "That's right, our physical condition is much better than yours!"

Alright, alright! Xu Han fell silent. It seemed to be true; the Taoist priest was clearly in better physical condition than her. As for Grandpa Zhao, he was a divine doctor; how could his physique be poor? She had worried for nothing.

After serving the dishes, Xu Han returned to the kitchen and brought out the honeysuckle water that had been soaking in advance. She handed it to everyone and said, "Why don't you have some water and rest for a bit first? I'll go make a cold dish. Dinner will be ready soon."

When they arrived at the kitchen, Zhao Yunyun was helping to wash the pots and pans that had already been used. The two of them worked together for a while before bringing the remaining food into the main room.

After lunch, everyone went for a nap to rest before going hunting in the afternoon.

Because it was so hot, the chili peppers in the house hadn't been watered for two days. Xu Han and Lu Chuan took advantage of everyone being asleep to quickly go outside to the waterfall to fetch water. The Taoist priest heard the commotion and followed them out of the courtyard.

"Master, why don't you go and rest for a while? The two of us can go; the waterfall is very close by," Lu Chuan said.

"It's alright, I'll go with you to take a look and find out what's going on."

Then she continued, "They'll be leaving tomorrow, and then we'll be able to use the space more freely."

There's no need to avoid Old Zhao. I told him before we came that no matter what he sees, he shouldn't ask any questions. He should just eat and drink as usual, pretend he doesn't know anything, and not be curious.

After a slight pause, he continued, "You two can rest assured about his character. I can guarantee that he's not a troublemaker."

He probably guessed some of the reasons, but he didn't ask me any more questions, and I didn't tell him either. You don't need to say much then; just continue as usual.

Ignore him. If he asks, he'll ask me. I'll just brush him off.

As for my silly apprentice and that girl Yunyun, they are still young.

But they're all smart people; even if they figure something out, they'll pretend they don't. So there's no need to be too secretive about cooking these next few days, just don't go too far.
