Chapter 21 Picking Mushrooms

The next morning, after breakfast, we took the dried bamboo shoots out to continue drying. We called Black Wind and Black Dot, and the two of them went out to pick mushrooms!

This time, Lu Chuan took Xu Han to go deeper into the mountains. Perhaps because there were many trees in the mountains, the road surface was still a bit damp, otherwise the mushrooms would have really spoiled.

After walking for about 15 minutes, the two arrived at a dense thicket of tall trees. The fallen leaves here were thick, perfect for mushrooms to grow, and there should be quite a few mushrooms there...

As soon as she entered, Xu Han spotted a dead tree covered with dense clusters of wood ear mushrooms and immediately called Lu Chuan over.

Each of them carried a basket and began picking. Soon their baskets were full, and they dumped the fruit directly into a large basket in their spatial storage. Then they moved on to the next round of battle!

There's no need to move the wooden stakes home; it's not far from home, and no one comes here, so there's no fear of being discovered by others!

Let it continue to grow here, and we'll come back to pick it next time it rains.

The two of them came prepared today, bringing all the baskets from home. They sorted the produce while picking it up, so they could just hang it to dry when they got home without having to sort it again! This saved them a lot of time.

Continuing on, I found a lot of chanterelle mushrooms near a patch of low bushes. I started picking them up again.

Picking mushrooms is really addictive; you just can't stop. You just keep your head down and walk forward, with lots of chanterelle mushrooms all around you.

Before long, they walked further and further away, but thankfully the black dot kept following them.

Otherwise, I really wouldn't dare to go too far from Luchuan, since it's spring now and snakes, insects, and rodents are all out.

Lu Chuan saw Xu Han walking further and further away, but he didn't follow closely. There were dark spots around her!

It will bark when it encounters danger! But it also won't let Xu Han out of its sight.

They continued picking things up until noon, filling all five baskets in the space and almost finishing the surrounding area.

The two found a rock to sit on, resting and eating at the same time.

We ate the stir-fried mushrooms from yesterday and the beef brisket we made a few days ago. The staple food was white rice. Of course, there was also chicken soup that we had prepared in advance.

Xu Han almost always has a combination of one meat dish, one vegetable dish, and a soup for every meal!

The dishes are all made according to the appetite of two people, and there are usually no leftovers. The leftovers are saved for Heifeng and Heidian to mix with rice. In short, nothing is wasted!

After lunch, Lu Chuan took Xu Han to a new place. They found a lot of morel mushrooms in the woods, which made Xu Han very happy!

Morel mushrooms are incredibly expensive these days; we usually can't afford to eat them! With so many here, wouldn't we be rich?

She took out a fruit knife from her spatial storage and started picking morel mushrooms, while Lu Chuan used his own dagger, which made Xu Han look resentful...

Lu Chuan saw Xu Han's expression and couldn't help but laugh. "Here, let's switch. I have two more at home. I'll give them to you when we get home, so you can keep them for self-defense."

Hearing Lu Chuan say this, Xu Han cheered up and said, "That's more like it. At least you have a conscience!"

After saying that, he lowered his head and continued picking morel mushrooms...

Lu Chuan just smiled and let Xu Han play around!

Turning around, I came to a tree stump, where it was covered with plump and juicy oyster mushrooms. They were big and meaty, and it was the perfect time to pick them!

Xu Han picked all the mushrooms without hesitation and put them into her spatial storage. The mushrooms from this large tree didn't even fill one basket. These would be enough for several meals.

They waited until the sun was about to set before stopping and preparing to leave. Today's harvest was truly plentiful!

The mushrooms in the vicinity had been almost all picked clean, and if they continued picking, they would have to go to a more distant place. The two decided to put their mushroom-picking business on hold for now and start clearing land tomorrow.

The weather is getting warmer, so we need to clear the wasteland quickly so we can plant things!

After getting home, I first put the dried bamboo shoots into the storage room. They're still drying tomorrow!

But looking at the winter bamboo shoots that had already shrunk by half, I couldn't help but feel sorry for them. They hadn't even been dried yet, and half of them were already gone.

Put the dried bamboo shoots together, leaving the bamboo mat empty, to use for drying mushrooms tomorrow.

6,000 catties of winter bamboo shoots, after removing the skin and drying, can yield about 600 catties.

There are only four large garbage bags of fresh bamboo shoots left in the space now, and they've all been peeled. We'll keep these to eat fresh! If we want more, we'll dig them up again in winter!

The drought hasn't even started this winter yet! We should be able to dig some up, but we might not be able to get any bamboo shoots in the spring!

After packing up, I took out the oyster mushrooms, tore them into small pieces, blanched them to remove any unpleasant smell, and then took out the garlic sprouts from the refrigerator to make a stir-fried mushroom with garlic sprouts!

This was Xu Han's favorite dish back in modern times! She would often cook it for herself.

Let's make another soup. No salty soup today, just a simple white flour and corn porridge (thinner than regular porridge! A type of porridge we eat for breakfast and dinner in Henan, Shandong, and northern Anhui!).

First, take out a fresh ear of corn from your space, remove the kernels, wash them, and put them in a pot. Add some rice to the pot as well.

Place the bamboo steamer rack in the pot; while making the porridge, you can also heat up the main dish. Place steamed buns and eggs on the rack—that's tonight's main meal.

After adding water and bringing it to a boil, add water to the mixed flour to make a slightly thin soup. Pour it into the pot and stir quickly to mix the water and flour paste evenly. It's ready to drink once the pot boils again.

Back in my hometown, my mom would make this every morning and evening. She would put different ingredients in the porridge, and the resulting porridge would be different each time.

The porridge made from corn and rice is sweet and has a pleasant corn aroma! It's delicious!

After having a good dinner together, the two began to discuss the land reclamation for the next day.

"Tomorrow, let's cut down all the weeds and shrubs. The weeds are all dry now, so we can just burn them directly after cutting them down. The ashes can also be used as fertilizer," Lu Chuan said.

"Let's clear out the wasteland east of the road first! The potatoes are already sprouting! Let's plant them there first; they have a short growth cycle, so we can grow several crops!"

"The sweet potato seedlings have already been planted and will be transplanted in a while. The corn and potatoes can wait a bit longer!" Xu Han replied.

Lu Chuan had no objection to this and nodded in agreement with Xu Han's suggestion.

After dinner, Lu Chuan organized the tools needed for tomorrow's land clearing, while Xu Han continued to work on making her shoes!

With the flashlight for lighting, the two of them no longer go to bed too early; they usually go to sleep around nine o'clock!

After all, the night is long. If you wake up before dawn, you can only lie there and do nothing. It's better to work overtime at night and do some things!

After tidying up, Lu Chuan went to boil water for a bath, while Xu Han was busy making shoes. Only after both soles were finished did she get up to wash up.

After washing up, I sat down at the vanity to start my skincare routine. I'm out and about every day, and the wind makes my skin very dry!

Xu Han now makes sure to take care of her skin every night whenever she has time!
