Chapter 23 Growing Vegetables

So Xu Han cleared the weeds while Lu Chuan turned the soil, and by mid-afternoon the two of them planted potatoes together. Lu Chuan made ridges in front, while Xu Han dug holes and buried the potatoes behind him. They didn't finish planting until it was almost dark.

The two of them worked on the wasteland to the east for seven or eight days and were almost done clearing it! They had cleared about six acres of land.

The plot of land that was leveled off the riverbank has been turned over and planted with potatoes.

However, not all the land on the slope was turned over; only the weeds were simply cleared away.

The weather is already quite warm now, the trees are sprouting, and the wild vegetables in the fields are growing, but they're not very big yet! In a few more days, when the wild vegetables are a bit bigger, I'll go out and dig some up to store and eat them in different ways!

I woke up early that morning to find the weather overcast and thought it was going to rain! But it didn't look like it was going to rain anytime soon.

So the two decided to transplant the vegetables from the backyard, so that they wouldn't need to water them separately after planting. This would save a lot of time!

The two went to the backyard first, where the shed for growing vegetables had been dismantled.

You can just dig out the vegetables and plant them.

Each variety should be planted together in one plot, so don't get them mixed up!

I did a simple plan and planted some low-growing vegetables such as peppers, eggplants, zucchini, cauliflower, and dwarf tomatoes on the west side near the path leading to the backyard.

Fortunately, Xu Han grew up in the countryside, otherwise she would not have recognized these vegetable seedlings.

When we turned the soil before, we had already made ridges and planned the layout. Now we can plant directly, which is much faster. Just control the spacing, dig holes, put in the seedlings, cover them with soil, and press them down firmly!

Plant them row by row. There are still some chili seedlings left. These are specially bred seedlings that can be planted on the edges of the wasteland outside.

Both Lu Chuan and Xu Han have strong tastes, so they need lots of chili peppers.

The entire east side is planted with climbing plants, all kinds of fruits such as tomatoes, green beans, cucumbers, and cantaloupes.

The land is completely planted, both sides are finished, only the open space by the passageway remains. These will be planted directly with some leek roots bought from farmers when we go to the county town later.

The two took the remaining pumpkin and winter melon seedlings and planted them directly on the slope outside the yard.

We'll just let it grow naturally later. We planted a huge patch of it, and it looks empty now, but once the vines grow, it will completely cover the ground!

There's not much worry about these vegetables being eaten outside, since we have two big hunting dogs at home! During the day, we open the yard gate and let Blackwind and Black Spot go out for a stroll often!

Most small animals don't dare to come here; there aren't even mice in the house normally!

After planting these, take out the scallion seeds you bought earlier and scatter them evenly next to the potatoes!

Onions are also an essential seasoning in the home. They grow quickly, so you need to grow a lot of them! Xu Han originally only had a little bit in her space, which was placed in the kitchen and couldn't be refreshed, so it's all gone now!

There were very few ginger seeds; I forgot about them when I bought them. I'll buy some more when I go to the county town in a few days.

Lu Chuan and Xu Han hadn't even had lunch, as they were frantically planting vegetables. Now, with dark clouds overhead, it looked like it was about to rain! The two continued planting the beans.

Lu Chuan used a hoe to dig a shallow furrow in front, while Xu Han sowed bean seeds behind him. They had only sown half the seeds when a light rain began to fall!

Fortunately, the rain wasn't heavy. Xu Han took out a raincoat from her spatial storage, while Lu Chuan put on a straw hat, and the two continued planting beans.

Xu Han sowed the soybeans rather sparsely; 20 jin of soybeans were enough to plant about three mu of land!

After planting the beans, both of them were covered in mud and water. Lu Chuan hurriedly went into the kitchen to boil water so that he wouldn't get sick later!

Xu Han took a quick shower. Although the weather was getting warmer, she still needed to wear a cotton coat in the mornings and evenings!

After getting caught in a light rain, I needed to eat a hot meal right away. I took out the chicken soup I had stewed earlier from my spatial storage, added shiitake mushrooms, noodles, and greens, and my delicious chicken soup and shiitake mushroom noodles were ready.

Lu Chuan came out of the bathroom as soon as the food was served. The two of them didn't go to the main room to eat, but instead sat around the warm stove to eat!

After the meal, Xu Han brewed a bowl of ginger tea, and everyone drank a bowl to prevent catching a cold!

Around 5 p.m., it had already gotten dark due to the weather.

Xu Han took out the fabric she had bought earlier from her spatial storage, intending to make herself a set of clothes first, since the weather was getting hot and she didn't even have a single layer of clothing!

Take out the fabric I bought earlier and make myself a light blue shirt.

Cut a slightly looser size according to your own measurements, leaving the pant legs and sleeves a little longer.

Put it in now, and let it out when you grow taller, and it will fit perfectly!

After cutting, use a sewing machine to quickly piece them together. In no time, the pieces in your hand are joined together, and a top is finished!

Even though Lu Chuan had already witnessed Xu Han's speed in making shoes, he couldn't help but be surprised this time!

In just an hour and a half, a set of clothes was completed from taking measurements to cutting and then piecing them together!

This was even before Xu Han was familiar with the process! She already did it so quickly. If she were skilled, she would finish in an hour!

Seeing Lu Chuan's expression, Xu Han couldn't help but laugh. She told him that in modern times, there are people who specialize in making clothes. They are much faster and can make many outfits a day!

Moreover, in modern times, almost everyone buys clothes and shoes, and very few people make their own clothes!

I bought this set of tools on a whim, never expecting it to be such a great help to me...

I tried on the clothes I made myself, and yes, the size is just right, a little loose, and it's comfortable to wear like this.

Looks like I'll have to do some research on lingerie tomorrow...

The next morning, when Xu Han woke up, she felt a warm heater next to her. She couldn't help but lean against it and change her position to continue sleeping.

Now that the weather is warmer, we no longer use the heated kang (a traditional heated brick bed). It's only a bit cold in the mornings and evenings. Perhaps because of yesterday's rain, this morning felt especially cold!

Perhaps sensing discomfort, it rubbed against him again, when suddenly a hoarse voice came from above his head, "Don't move!"

Xu Han instantly snapped back to reality! Realizing what she was doing, she immediately tried to get up and move over, but was pulled back into someone's arms by a strong force.

"Sleep a little longer, it's still raining outside!" Lu Chuan said.

No wonder this man hasn't gotten up yet; usually when Xu Han wakes up, she's the only one on the kang (heated brick bed)!

Although I often sleep with Lu Chuan in my arms at night, I still feel embarrassed now that I'm awake!

Forget it, we're husband and wife anyway, what's wrong with a hug? It's legal!
