Therefore, the two of them also had to go outside from time to time to check the condition of the drainage ditch.
"This rain shows no sign of stopping, and I don't know when it will stop," Grandpa Zhao said worriedly, looking outside.
"There's nothing we can do but wait. If this area gets flooded, where can we go to hide? We'll probably just be facing certain death."
"Yes, the water has already flooded up to the sweet potatoes we planted before. I estimate the water is at least as high as a person."
"It's alright, don't worry. This place is much higher than the stream, so it shouldn't flood. After all, the stream is quite far from here," Xu Han said with a smile, reassuring Grandpa Zhao.
"I hope so."
Worrying now is useless. Even if you could go to higher ground in this heavy rain, it would be extremely dangerous.
The road is so narrow that you can't even see it clearly. If you slip and fall, you're doomed.
For now, staying at home is the safest option, at least you won't fall. As long as there are no landslides or mudslides on this mountain, then living here is the safest place.
As the two were talking, they suddenly heard a loud bang, which startled Xu Han and Grandpa Zhao.
Little Mu'er was so frightened that she burst into tears. When Xu Han heard Mu'er crying, she quickly reacted and picked Mu'er up.
Then he immediately got up and looked outside the courtyard. He saw two blurry figures slowly walking into the house, and only then did he calm down a little.
Seeing that the two were alright, he began to gently coax the frightened Mu'er.
Upon seeing the two enter, Grandpa Zhao quickly took out dry towels and handed them to Lu Chuan and the Taoist priest, gesturing for them to wipe the rain off their faces and bodies.
"What happened outside? Grandpa Zhao and I just heard a really loud bang, it scared us to death," Xu Han asked.
"It's alright, it's probably just a landslide on that hillside. Judging from the sound, it shouldn't be far away from us, so don't worry," Lu Chuan reassured him.
"Don't be afraid, little girl. Don't you believe me? I said everything's fine here, so I mean it. Don't worry," the Taoist priest said.
"The rain was so heavy that it's normal for collapses and landslides to occur. Fortunately, no one lives down the mountain right now, otherwise the people there would be in real trouble," Grandpa Zhao said.
“This is just the first hill; judging by the rain, there will probably be more to come,” Lu Chuan added.
"Heavens above! Are you trying to kill us all? When will this rain ever stop?"
No one spoke, their faces were all somber, and even little Mu'er stopped crying and stayed quietly in Xu Han's arms.
Everyone sat there quietly, anxiously worried about the next landslide, while silently praying that the heavy rain would stop soon.
After an unknown amount of time, just as it was getting dark outside, another loud bang was suddenly heard.
Although everyone was prepared, they still couldn't help but shudder when they heard the loud noise.
Realizing what had happened, Lu Chuan quickly hugged his wife and children tightly, gently patting Xu Han's back.
"The sound is even louder than last time. I wonder which mountain it's coming from?" the Taoist priest said.
Grandpa Zhao realized what was happening and grabbed his binoculars to look around, but the rain was so heavy that he couldn't see anything outside; everything was shrouded in a gray haze.
"Forget it, it's pointless to look. What can you see in this heavy rain?" the Taoist priest said.
Seeing this, Grandpa Zhao helplessly put down his binoculars and sighed.
"Alright, alright, it's getting late. Girl, bring out the food. People need to eat, otherwise you won't even have the strength to run."
Upon hearing this, Xu Han silently handed Mu'er to Lu Chuan, then returned to her room and brought out the food on a tray.
Xu Han's pregnancy is not very obvious even though she is over six months pregnant, because her morning sickness is still very severe. At six months, her pregnancy is only slightly worse than before she was pregnant.
She looks almost like she's not pregnant, so she can do a lot of work normally, but because she can't eat much, she always lacks energy.
This time, Xu Han didn't move around every day like she did last time during her pregnancy. She spent most of her time sitting on the kang (a heated brick bed) embroidering things or doing handicrafts to pass the time.
Otherwise, they're either sleeping or sitting in the main room listening to everyone chat.
The meal was eaten in complete silence; apart from the sounds of chewing and chopsticks clattering against bowls, there was no other noise at the table.
People are eating much less than usual. Well, how many people can really not take something this serious? Everyone is more or less worried about what will happen next.
After dinner, everyone washed up briefly and went back to their rooms to rest.
No one slept well that night, and they heard noises one or two more times throughout the night.
Moreover, the thunder and lightning outside were extremely loud, continuing all night long. One moment there was a flash of lightning, the next a thunderclap, and coupled with the sound of the howling wind, the deep mountains at night seemed particularly frightening.
Xu Han drifted off to sleep just before dawn.
Everyone woke up late that morning, and Xu Han didn't get up until after they had all finished breakfast.
Seeing that everyone had bruises under their eyes, Xu Han knew that not only had she not slept well, but everyone else had too.
Little Mu'er was listless and lethargic. She was held in Grandpa Zhao's arms without moving and had lost her usual energy.
