Chapter 276 Digging a Fishpond

They were all dug and built close to the edge, so they don't block the road, and you can't even see the big fishpond unless you look closely.

We can plant lots of lotus flowers then, and whenever we want to eat fish, we can come and catch them anytime, which will be very convenient.

First, we need to dig a pit for the fishpond. The pit doesn't need to be too deep, just deep enough.

The ponds for planting lotus flowers don't need to be too deep, so the two ponds can be dug quite quickly.

After the pond is dug, a layer of waterproofing material is applied to it using a mixture of five types of soil to prevent water seepage or fish and shrimp from burrowing away.

The general process of digging a pond is similar to that of building a reservoir, except that the pond is not as deep.

Lu Chuanyunhua, Grandpa Zhao, and the other two were digging a fishpond here when Zhao Yunyun and Xu Han took Mu'er home.

The three of them can't be of much help here, so they might as well go home and rest. They can also take advantage of the time in the afternoon to cook a nice meal for everyone.

"What do you want to eat tonight? Let's make dinner early tonight," Xu Han asked.

"After being away for so long, what I miss most is Sister Xiaohan's hot pot. Let's have hot pot again," Zhao Yunyun said.

“Okay, then let’s have hot pot today. Knowing you were coming back, your brother-in-law specially went to the deep mountains to catch a wild pheasant. It’ll be the best soup base.” Xu Han said with a smile.

"Then I must thank you, brother-in-law," Zhao Yunyun said with a smile, linking her arm with Xu Han's.

"I'll go make some chicken soup first, and then wash the vegetables. We can eat right away when they come back," Xu Han said as she walked into the storeroom and took out a fresh chicken.

Actually, this chicken comes from inside the space, but if we don't say that, we won't get any meat today. People came all this way to help, and we can't just eat vegetables all day.

Xu Han only took out a pheasant, some green vegetables and mushrooms, and didn't take out anything else.

The floods have only just passed, so if we were to suddenly bring out a lot of meat, it would definitely arouse suspicion.

"We don't have many ingredients for this hot pot. I'll have your brother-in-law prepare the dishes in advance next time you come. The harvest season hasn't been good these past few years, so food options are limited. Let's make do for now," Xu Han said to Zhao Yunyun as she carried the ingredients into the kitchen.

"It's alright, Sister Xiaohan, I understand," Zhao Yunyun said cheerfully.

Zhao Yunyun, living far from home, has a deep understanding of what life has been like these past few years. Having enough to eat and being able to eat one's fill is already a blessing for many.

How could they complain that the ingredients weren't plentiful enough or that there wasn't enough meat?

Seeing that Zhao Yunyun didn't seem to care, Xu Han didn't say anything more. The two of them started simmering the chicken soup together, and then Xu Han took Mu'er to play in the main room.

Outside the courtyard, Lu Chuan and his two companions were digging a hole with great enthusiasm. It must be said that Yun Hua was a skilled hole digger, strong and fast.

He was the epitome of a hard worker in everyone's eyes, a good son-in-law in the eyes of the people. Even Lu Chuan had to admire him, sighing that he and Yun Hua were still no match.

"Yunhua, you're doing the work of both me and Grandpa Zhao. Here's a big chicken leg for you as a reward today," Lu Chuan teased.

"Alright, I'll work hard just for this chicken leg," Yunhua said with great enthusiasm.

"Working with Yunhua, you can't even slack off. You'll find yourself speeding up your pace without even realizing it. Yunhua, you should really consider this old man's health," Grandpa Zhao joked.

"Hahaha, Grandpa Zhao, don't try to compete with me. If you hurt your back, Yunyun will tear me apart."

"I can't guarantee that," Grandpa Zhao said with a smile. The three of them chatted and laughed as they dug the hole.

Yunhua was in charge of digging, Grandpa Zhao was in charge of putting the dug soil into baskets, and Lu Chuan was in charge of carrying the soil out and piling it up by the pond.

The three of them took turns doing different tasks, so that it wouldn't be too strenuous for one person to do it for too long.

After the sun set, Xu Han noticed that no one had returned, so she sent Mu'er to call them for dinner.

Xu Han wasn't worried about Mu'er getting lost, since she was right at the doorstep and Lu Chuan and the others could see her as soon as they stepped outside.

Besides, she was even having her dog accompany her. There was no danger or wild animals near her home, and Mu'er was a very obedient child, so Xu Han was quite at ease.

Children need to learn gradually, and we can't protect them too much. Letting them challenge themselves with new things from time to time is a form of growth for them.

"Daddy, Mommy's calling us for dinner!" Mu'er happily ran towards Lu Chuan and the other two with Peanut in her arms.

Before we even got there, we heard Mu'er shout loudly.

Seeing this, the three began to prepare for the finishing touches. When Mu'er walked up to them, Yunhua picked her up in his arms.

"Mu'er, what delicious food did your mother make today? Tell your martial uncle quickly."

"Pot, pot, chicken!" Mu'er exclaimed excitedly, waving her little arms.

"Looks like we're in for a treat today! Let's go home and have hot pot." Yunhua said, then put Mu'er on his shoulder and carried her towards home.

Mu'er, who was being carried, laughed heartily and had a great time.

Only Lu Chuan, who was cleaning up the mess, and Grandpa Zhao, who was slowly walking forward, remained by the fishpond.

When everyone arrived home, Zhao Yunyun had already laid out the side dishes. Seeing them come in, she quickly got up to get bowls and chopsticks.

Xu Han went to the storeroom to get some wine. Everyone hadn't had a drink in a long time, so they decided to have a drink together to liven things up while they were having a good time.

"This wine was brewed before the drought. I haven't been able to bear drinking it, and I'm saving it specifically for everyone to drink together," Xu Han said as she poured the wine.

"You two don't know, but when the Taoist priest wants to drink, Xiao Han is reluctant to let him. She only lets the two of us have a little bit at a time, and she won't let us drink any more," Grandpa Zhao said with a smile.

"Isn't it because you two always drink too much? I'm doing this for your own good," Xu Han argued.

“Sister Xiaohan is right. Grandpa, you and the Taoist priest shouldn’t drink together. You always get drunk. We should keep an eye on you two,” Zhao Yunyun added.

"Hahaha, see, even Yunyun says so. It's not that I'm reluctant to let you guys drink it."

"Okay, okay, you're all right. We can drink now, right?"

"It's okay to drink today, but don't overindulge," Zhao Yunyun said.

"Xiao Han's homemade wine tastes better than what you buy outside. Especially this fruit wine, it's sweet and sour and very delicious, perfect for you girls. It would be even better if it were a bit stronger," Yun Hua said, picking up a glass of wine and taking a sip.

“Next time I have the chance, I’ll try to see if I can brew some stronger liquor. If I succeed, you’ll be able to drink strong liquor next time,” Xu Han said.
