"Don't worry, Mu'er can understand what we're saying and won't make a fuss. As for Ze'er, he should be fine as long as he's eaten. Grandpa Zhao will definitely be able to take good care of them both. Let's get ready and go to sleep."
"I really don't know whether I should praise you for being so carefree." Xu Han rolled her eyes at Lu Chuan.
Mothers are truly a very contradictory role. When they are at home taking care of their children every day, they get annoyed when they see them making a fuss.
But sometimes, seeing their adorable faces can suddenly trigger a surge of maternal instincts.
When I'm home with them every day, I always feel like I don't have any space of my own. My life revolves around the children all day long, but when I leave them, I miss them terribly.
One minute I'm wondering if they've behaved well, the next I'm wondering if they've eaten enough, and then I'm wondering if they've gone to sleep properly...
And so, Xu Han fell asleep while thinking about it...
The next morning, it was still quite cold in the deep mountains.
The two didn't get out of bed until it was fully light.
"It's really cold today, wear more clothes so you don't catch a cold," Lu Chuan said to Xu Han as he put on his clothes.
Even though it's already March, you can still see a puff of white vapor when I speak.
"I understand. I'll wear a down jacket outside, and I can take it off when it gets hot."
"Okay, I'll go boil some water first. You can get up in a little while. There's dew outside, so you can't go out. Just sleep a little longer."
"Okay." Just as Xu Han was struggling with whether or not to get up, Lu Chuan said this, so Xu Han went along with it and stayed in bed.
Xu Han didn't get up until Lu Chuan had boiled the water.
After finishing their breakfast, the two left the cave together.
"Shall we go that way?" Xu Han asked.
"Let's wander around for a bit first. This area is quite remote, and I haven't explored it much before."
"Okay, let's go and see."
As the two walked, they looked around, while the dogs scattered nearby, remaining vigilant at all times.
“These dogs haven’t hunted in a long time, so their hunting skills must have deteriorated a lot. You should train them properly when you have time.”
"Yes, the prey in the mountains are currently in their breeding season. I'll take them to the deep mountains a few more times in the summer."
"We've been exploring the deep mountains all day, and we haven't really seen much prey. We've seen some pheasants and rabbits, but we haven't seen any large prey at all."
“The Taoist priest and I had already cleared out several hills around here. During the famine, we hunted so many wolves and tigers that there are no large prey left in the area.”
"Could those large prey from afar be heading this way?"
"That's possible, but it's uncertain when they'll come, or even if they'll come at all. If no one intervenes for a long time, large prey will definitely be active here."
“Then when the Taoist priest returns, you should go out with him more often. Mu’er has grown up now, and I’m really afraid that he’ll run away alone and get carried off by a tiger again.”
Xu Han was terrified at the thought, so she had no choice but to sacrifice Lu Chuan and the Taoist priest.
"Don't worry about that. As long as there's enough prey in the mountains, large wild animals won't come to our area."
"There are signs that someone has lived near our house, and they're afraid of that," Lu Chuan said with a smile, trying to comfort Xu Han.
"I'm just doing this as a precaution."
"Hahaha, good, good, good. We'll go deep into the mountains more often in the future," Lu Chuan said indulgently.
The two of them strolled around the nearby hills for a while, and then headed towards the pond around noon.
Upon arriving at the destination, Xu Han first took out lunch from her spatial storage.
After lunch, Lu Chuan went down into the pond to dig lotus roots.
"This should be enough, right? The pond at home isn't very big, so we won't need many lotus seeds. Let the rest stay here and let them multiply on their own. We'll come back and dig them up when they've grown up," Xu Han shouted to Lu Chuan in the water.
"It's been a long time since I've eaten lotus root. I'll dig up some more, enough to eat for two meals at home."
Lu Chuan handed the lotus root in his hand to Xu Han and continued digging.
Lu Chuan didn't get up and go ashore until the sun was slowly setting in the west.
"It's still early, let's go to the stream next to us and wash the lotus roots we dug up these past two days."
"Okay." After Lu Chuan finished speaking, the two walked towards the river again...
The next morning, when the temperature wasn't so low, Lu Chuan and Xu Han set off home.
Xu Han hadn't seen Mu'er and Ze'er for two days and missed them terribly. In this era, there were no telephones or anything like that, so she couldn't even see them.
Xu Han didn't linger much along the way, digging for wild vegetables as she quickly made her way home.
The two arrived home around two o'clock. Lu Chuan saw that the gate was tightly closed, so he quickly knocked on the door and called for help.
"Grandpa Zhao, we're back! Open the door!"
"Here you are! I knew you'd arrive around this time, so I've been waiting for you."
Grandpa Zhao responded as he walked this way.
"Grandpa Zhao, are Mu'er and the others asleep?" Xu Han asked impatiently as soon as she entered the courtyard.
“He hasn’t gone to sleep yet. I told him you two should be back soon, so he didn’t sleep and is waiting for you two.”
Upon hearing this, Xu Han washed her hands and quickly went inside.
"Mu'er, Mother is back."
"Mother, Mother, I missed you so much." Mu'er ran over quickly when he saw Xu Han. Xu Han caught him and hugged him and kissed him.
"Mother misses Mu'er too. Has Mu'er been good at home? Has she listened to Great-Grandpa?"
"Mu'er is a good girl. Mu'er even helped Great-Grandpa look after her little brother."
"Mu'er is so wonderful! Mommy will get you something delicious later."
After Xu Han finished speaking, she handed Mu'er to Lu Chuan, who was waiting on the side. Even though Lu Chuan also missed the child, he pretended to be indifferent.
The moment the father and son embraced, Lu Chuan could no longer pretend and carried Mu'er around the yard.
Xu Han listened to the cheerful laughter coming from the courtyard and smiled helplessly.
Then he turned around and went into the room to look at his youngest son, who was already fast asleep.
When Lu Chuan brought Mu'er in, Xu Han had already changed her clothes and was asleep on the bed.
Seeing this, Lu Chuan quickly slowed his pace and put his son on the bed. "Mother is asleep. Mu'er, you should take a nap too. Father will go change his clothes and come in in a bit."
"Okay, Daddy wants to sleep too."
When Lu Chuan came out, Grandpa Zhao had already gone back to his room to rest. Seeing this, Lu Chuan washed his face briefly and then went to sleep as well.
