Chapter 315 Composting

Xu Han needs to compost a lot of fertilizer, which would be too extravagant and costly. Therefore, this method is not feasible.

I thought and thought, but nothing seemed to work. There seemed to be something in my mind, but I couldn't quite grasp it.

Xu Han stayed in the room by herself until Lu Chuan called her to eat, at which point she finally came out.

"Xiao Han, don't think about it for now. At worst, we can plant less crops this year," Grandpa Zhao comforted her.

"It's alright, Grandpa Zhao. I've already thought of a solution. Let's try it out tomorrow, and we'll know in a while whether it works."

"What? You really came up with a way to make manure fertilizer?" Lu Chuan looked at Xu Han in disbelief.

"Yes, but it's a bit troublesome. However, the success rate of this composting is very high, and it takes very little time, so it won't interfere with our planting of crops."

It's only early March, so it's fine to plant crops like rice, corn, and soybeans a little later.

After listening to Xu Han's words, Grandpa Zhao asked thoughtfully, "How do you compost?"

"Hahaha, you'll find out tomorrow." Xu Han smiled but didn't say anything, keeping everyone in suspense.

After saying that, he lowered his head and began to eat, leaving Grandpa Zhao and Lu Chuan at the table looking at each other in bewilderment. At the same time, their curiosity was piqued.

The next morning, Xu Han directed Lu Chuan, and the two of them went to the pine forest again to collect pine needles.

"Didn't we collect a lot of pine needles yesterday? Do we need to do it again?"

"Yes, we need more pine needles this time; I'm going to use them for compost."

Can pine needles be composted?

"Yes! We need not only pine needles, but also some dried leaves. Let's hurry up, we have a lot of materials to prepare today."

After Xu Han finished speaking, she took the lead and left the courtyard. Lu Chuan quickly followed behind her.

The two men skillfully entered the pine forest and quickly filled another 30 baskets with pine needles.

Then they walked together toward the flat area where the firewood was stored.

Xu Han disliked the smell of feces left outside the house.

So the open space outside the courtyard gate has now been completely cleared, and all the excrement and firewood have been moved here.

The place here is quite large, and it's not far from home, so it's convenient to come and pick it up.

However, not all the excrement that is cleaned up every day is placed here.

The excrement collected each day is temporarily placed behind the courtyard wall, and then transported here by cart after it has accumulated to some extent.

After dumping the pine needles on the ground, they pulled Lu Chuan to collect some withered branches and leaves nearby, filling about twenty or thirty baskets.

Because there were a lot of materials to prepare today, neither of them went home for lunch. They were busy until mid-afternoon before they finally finished preparing all the pine needles, withered branches and leaves.

"Can these things really be composted together?" This was the nth time Lu Chuan had asked this question.

"There are still some things missing. Theoretically, it should be possible, but I don't know if it will work out."

Lu Chuan's heart pounded when he heard Xu Han say this. Although doing these things didn't take much effort, it would be disastrous if all the excrement was wasted.

Then there won't be any manure left in the house.

However, Lu Chuan couldn't stop Xu Han from trying; if it actually worked, it would be a huge help.

Lu Chuan could only silently comfort himself, "Oh well, let my wife give it a try."

At worst, we can harvest less this year. Anyway, we still have plenty of grain at home, so it won't make a difference.

So he asked again, "What else is missing? Let's get it now before it gets dark."

"We still need some grass. Let's go to the orchard and pull some weeds. The grass we pull can be used for compost, and we can also clear the weeds in the orchard at the same time."

“Okay, the weeds in the orchard are indeed growing quite tall. Let’s pull out the larger ones first, and we can deal with the smaller ones when we have more free time.”

After they finished talking, the two walked towards the orchard, which was not far from here; it was just a short walk away.

Upon arriving at the orchard, Xu Han handed Lu Chuan a pair of gloves, and the two began their work.

The pulled grass was piled into small mounds. There was no time to compost it today, so we'll leave it here and collect it tomorrow.

"It's getting dark, let's go back," Xu Han said, straightening up and stretching her back.

My back is so sore from bending over all day.

"Okay, you must be tired after a long day. Go back and rest for a bit. I'll boil some water for you so you can take a nice bath and relax."

"Yeah, all this time of day is really taking a toll on your back. I'll give you a massage when we get back."

When Xu Han arrived at her doorstep, she saw a small figure standing at the gate, looking around at something.

Upon seeing the two, he quickly ran into the yard.

"Why did Mu'er go inside?" Lu Chuan asked, puzzled.

"I don't know either. We'll find out the reason when we get back."

After Xu Han finished speaking, she quickened her pace. Before she even reached home, she saw Mu'er carrying a tray and swaying as she walked towards them.

"Mother and Father, have some water."

"Hahaha, you're such a good son. Your father has not spoiled you for nothing. Now you even know to bring your father water."

Lu Chuan laughed heartily, as if he had won two million in the lottery.

Xu Han immediately took the tray from Mu'er's hands, afraid that he might accidentally drop it himself.

"Mu'er is so wonderful. You're so thoughtful."

"Daddy and Mommy worked so hard. I was a good girl at home today and even helped Grandpa Zhao look after my little brother," Mu'er said haltingly.

Someone who can't even speak fluently can do something so touching.

"Mu'er, you've worked so hard today. You're really capable," Xu Han praised without reservation.

After Xu Han and Lu Chuan washed their hands and faces, they sat down to rest in the courtyard.

Lu Chuan took Ze'er and played with him, while Xu Han asked Grandpa Zhao curiously, "Why did Mu'er suddenly remember to pour water for us today?"

"Hahaha, this little rascal is clever. Today we learned some articles, and based on the content of the articles, I talked about how hard farming is."

Then I told him that they had gone to work in the fields, and that if they didn't work, he wouldn't have anything to eat.

He listened to this advice and was exceptionally well-behaved all day, helping to watch over Ze'er and waiting outside for you to return after sunset.

They insisted on bringing you both water and even offered to give you back massages.

"Hahaha, my son is so sensible." Lu Chuan began to show his pride again.

Xu Han glanced at Lu Chuan, said nothing, and instead felt a surge of pride. She thought to herself, "My eldest son is so sensible."
