Chapter 45 Making Mosquito Coils

After buying the medicinal herbs, they went to the grain store. This time, instead of the two previous grain stores, they went to a new one.

After all, it hasn't been long since we bought the grain. If we were to buy more large quantities of grain, we would definitely be suspected of having ulterior motives, and it wouldn't be worth it if we were arrested by the government.

Xu Han and Lu Chuan never thought of telling the government officials or anyone else about the drought.

The two of them had no power or influence. If they were used by someone with ulterior motives, they wouldn't even know how they died. All that could be done was to warn others when the weather changed later on.

Xu Han didn't want to be burned to death. Whether they believed her or not was up to them. It was more important to save herself first.

After arriving at the grain store, I bought 3,000 jin of dark flour directly. This time, I didn't buy white flour or rice.

It cost a total of 18 taels of silver. After this purchase, we have a total of 1 jin of grain, enough for the two people and two dogs to live on for seven years. However, Blackie will have puppies later, and this grain will definitely not be enough.

The exact amount to be supplemented will be decided after the black spot has had several babies.

After the autumn harvest, the black spots should have appeared by then. We can buy new grain directly instead of milled grain. We can keep it outside for a longer time since we can't fit so much stuff in the space!

After buying their fruit, the two went to the market to see if they could find any fresh fruit. Sure enough, they only had peaches for sale; it's peach season now. Other fruits weren't available yet!

We bought everything along the way, eight baskets of peaches. Adding to the four baskets we bought before, and after eating one basket, we now have a total of eleven baskets of peaches left. But that's not enough to eat!

Looks like I'll need to buy some more when I have time! I'll save them to eat slowly later!

The eight baskets of peaches cost a total of 600 coins. I also bought some other snacks and odds and ends, which cost another 400 coins.

Every time she buys something, Xu Han would sigh: Money really doesn't last long!

After buying these items, they remembered that the roast chicken they had bought earlier was already gone, so the two of them went back to the roast chicken stall and bought 18 servings of roast chicken, spending another 700 coins.

This time, I earned a total of 11 taels of silver from selling the game in the county town. I spent 21 taels and 2 mace on buying things. All the money added up, I still had 174 taels of silver and 3 taels of copper coins left.

After buying what they needed, it was the hottest time of day, so the two decided to find a teahouse to rest for a while and then continue their journey home when the sun wasn't so strong.

Arriving at the teahouse, we ordered a pot of tea, along with some melon seeds, peanuts, and other snacks. We listened to the opera while enjoying the melon seeds.

This was Xu Han's first time listening to opera! Her Chinese blood was instantly awakened, and she listened with great interest, not wanting to go home when it was time to leave.

If she weren't worried about the safety of traveling in the dark, Xu Han would have listened a little longer!

By the time I got home, the sun had already set.

Xu Han went to the sweet potato field, picked some sweet potato stems, and planned to make a cold sweet potato stem salad later. It would be delicious and appetizing.

Choose sweet potato stems with tender tips, as these won't have any stringy fibers. After cutting them into appropriately sized pieces, stir-fry them briefly in water.

Next, prepare the garlic by crushing it, then add soy sauce, aged vinegar, MSG, sesame oil, pepper, and salt to taste. Pour this mixture directly over the sweet potato stems! And you're done.

Then take out the roast chicken I just bought today, shred it, and plate it.

I'll cook a bowl of West Lake beef soup and some white rice, and dinner is ready for tonight.

After they finished eating, Xu Han lay down on a recliner in the courtyard, rocking back and forth while fanning herself with a palm-leaf fan. She looked quite content.

A good night's sleep...

In the morning, Xu Han rubbed the dried mugwort into mugwort floss.

Then, carrying a basket on my back, I went to the nearby pine forest to collect some pine cones to use.

The pine cones in this pine forest are the kind without pine nuts. Although it is called a pine forest, there are not many pine trees.

Before long, they had picked all the pine cones, filling three large baskets.

Back home, after lunch, I put the pine cones into a jar, sealed it, and started a fire around the jar to turn the pine cones inside into charcoal.

After all the pine cones were removed, Lu Chuan returned and began helping Xu Han grind the charcoal into powder.

At that moment, Xu Han suddenly realized that there was no millstone at home.

So he said, "It seems we don't have a millstone at home. Let's find someone to make one! We'll need it to grind our own flour later, and we can also make our own tofu!"

At this point, Xu Han suddenly had a craving for soy milk; it had been such a long, long time since she had it.

“Okay, next time we go to the county town, we’ll find someone to make one. I know there’s a stonemason in the village where we went to exchange leek roots last time.”

"Okay, don't forget!"

Seeing Xu Han's expectant look, Lu Chuan nodded hurriedly and said, "I won't forget."

While Lu Chuan was grinding charcoal, Xu Han took a basket and went to the sweet potato field outside the courtyard to pick sweet potato leaves.

Sweet potato leaves are a great vegetable with high nutritional value, and Xu Han especially loves to eat them. Whether stir-fried with hot and sour sweet potato stems or served cold, they are delicious.

The best thing to eat is sweet potato leaf steamed buns, which is Xu Han's favorite.

The sweet potato leaves are growing very well. I'll pick the tender ones first and fill a basket. Then, when they grow even more tender after the rain, I'll pick more.

Simply peel off the leaves one by one. There will be a small piece of sweet potato stem and some leaves. You can pick them off again when you want to eat them.

In no time, the basket was full of sweet potato stems.

When I got home, I tied the sweet potato stems together with straw rope and stored them in the storage space.

For dinner, Xu Han stir-fried a dish of sweet potato stems with sour and spicy sauce.

Cut the sweet potato stems into sections and wash them clean. Heat oil in a wok, add chili peppers, Sichuan peppercorns, and shredded ginger, then add the sweet potato stems and stir-fry. Add plenty of vinegar and fresh chili peppers and stir-fry evenly. Finally, add seasonings to taste and it's ready to serve.

Take out the braised lamb chops and steamed rice from the space. Serve with a drink and you're ready to eat.

Both of them really liked this spicy and sour sweet potato stem dish; it was sour and spicy and especially delicious!

After dinner, Xu Han mixed a certain proportion of mugwort floss, charcoal, realgar and elm powder evenly, added water to make a dough of medium softness and started rolling it into strips.

Then, coil each long strip into the shape of a mosquito coil and place them on a wooden board to air dry!

Do not expose it to direct sunlight, as it will easily break. Just leave it to air dry in the hallway!

This time, we didn't do much. We just did a little experiment to see how it went. Xu Han did it based on her memory of watching videos before.

I don't remember the exact proportions very clearly, I only know the general idea, which ingredients were in larger quantities and which were in smaller quantities, it was all done by guesswork.

After everything was finished, it was already around 10:30.

After a quick wash, I'm getting ready for bed. Another busy day ahead!
