Not far from home, two small figures could be seen at the gate. It turned out to be Mu'er and Ze'er squatting at the gate of the yard, waiting for Xu Han and Lu Chuan to come home.
As soon as the couple approached, the two children rushed towards them.
"Father, Mother, what delicious fruits did you pick?"
Xu Han pulled Ze'er off her body and clapped her hands with a look of disgust, saying, "Mother's clothes are all soaked. Stay away from me, it's sticky and uncomfortable."
Even after being pulled down, Ze'er wasn't annoyed. He continued to tiptoe and peer into the basket, his little hands occasionally reaching out to try and take the contents out of the basket to look at them.
Xu Han was so bothered by him that she simply put down her basket as soon as she entered the courtyard and let him find it himself.
He then called out to the kitchen, "Chunchan, bring me a small wooden basin. I picked some wild fruits. Take them to the backyard, wash them, and give them to the children."
Having received the instructions, Chun Chan quickly ran out of the kitchen, and the four little ones followed her to the backyard to wash wild fruits.
Xu Han had hot water brought to her so she could take a bath. It was just too hot; she felt sticky all over, and her clothes were clinging to her body. She couldn't move around without changing into clean clothes.
In the evening, after the servants finished their dinner, they all returned to the valley to spend the night, and the house returned to its usual tranquility.
For some time now, the house has been bustling with people coming and going, so this sudden quiet is quite unusual for Xu Han.
"Today is their first night living there. I wonder how things are going for them and whether they're adjusting well."
Why do I feel like I'm the one who's not used to it? It was too noisy when they were here, but now that they've all moved away, it feels a bit lonely.
The Taoist priest joked, "You've gotten used to their noise here. It's understandable that you're not used to it now that they've all moved away. You'll be fine in a few days."
Grandpa Zhao lay in his rocking chair, idly fanning himself with a round fan, and said, "I think the heat these past two days has been a bit abnormal. The weather is both muggy and hot, and I reckon it's going to rain again."
Lu Chuan looked up at the sky and saw that it was full of stars without a single cloud. He said, "It shouldn't be like that. There are still quite a few stars in the sky. Tomorrow should still be a sunny day."
Xu Han picked up the water beside her and drank it while saying, "That's not necessarily true. The weather in the mountains is the most unpredictable. It might rain in a little while."
"Please, please don't let it rain. The crops in the fields are about to be harvested, and a heavy rain at this time would be a real problem."
"That's not necessarily true. Who can predict the weather?"
Xu Han thought for a moment and then asked, "Are the corn and beans in the field ready to be harvested? Should we harvest them soon? It would be troublesome if a heavy rain came."
The Taoist priest said, "It's alright, we can hold on for two more days. Even if it rains these two days, it won't matter. The corn and beans aren't fully ripe yet! There's no rush."
Xu Han was relieved upon hearing this. "Okay, that's good. The harvest is coming soon, so we must make sure the crops don't overripe because of the rain."
"Don't worry about it, you don't need to worry about things in the fields."
As they chatted, the conversation somehow drifted back to Yunhua. The Taoist priest spoke first, saying, "I wonder when Yunhua will be back. It's been so long since I've seen him. I wonder how he's doing these days?"
"Now that there are so many more people in the house and so many things have happened, they don't even know. Do you think we should write a letter to them to let them know?"
Upon hearing this, Xu Han immediately perked up. "Why don't we write a letter to the two of them and let them know?"
They haven't been back for a long time. I'll ask them if they're coming back for Chinese New Year this year. If they are, I'll prepare more New Year's goods.
Lu Chuan smiled upon hearing this. "There are still four or five months until the New Year. Isn't it a bit too early to start preparing for the holiday?"
"Not too early, not too early. Some things need to be done early. Otherwise, it will be too late."
After listening to everyone's words, Grandpa Zhao said to Mu'er, "Mu'er, go inside and get paper and pen. We'll write letters to your Uncle Yunhua and Aunt Yun."
"Alright, I miss Uncle Yunhua and Aunt Yun too. I'll write them a letter later."
Xu Han urged, "Alright, alright, go quickly."
After Mu'er brought out the writing brush, ink, paper, and inkstone, everyone found a place and began writing letters to the two of them.
This is the first time everyone has written to each other separately. In the past, messages were delivered by carrier pigeons, and they only talked about important things and rarely about trivial matters at home.
However, judging from the way things are going today, everyone seems to be planning to give long speeches.
Even Ze'er is writing something in his scribbles right now.
From afar, Xu Han saw that Ze'er's letter was covered with many words, each one different in appearance, size, and shape. She wondered if his adorable uncle and dear Aunt Yun could understand it.
Whether they can understand it or not, Ze'er doesn't care. Right now, he's writing diligently and with great enthusiasm!
In contrast, Mu'er was much better. Her handwriting was neat and orderly as she wrote something. Mu'er's little face showed smiles and frowns, as if she was sharing something.
Xu Han put her mind at ease and stopped looking at them, and began to seriously think about what she should say to Yunhua and Yunyun in the letter.
She wrote more and more, and before she knew it, she had filled several pages, telling them about all the big and small things that happened at home.
Xu Han recounted everything in detail, from who had joined the family and what new things had happened, to the daily lives of Mu'er and Ze'er, and the current situation of the Taoist priest and Grandpa Zhao.
They also made sure to ask about their recent life and, most importantly, when they would be able to come back.
The others were in similar situations, each writing several pages. Xu Han wrote the most, whether it was a letter to Yun Hua or a letter to Zhao Yunyun, each letter was several pages long.
In the end, she had to stop because her wrist hurt from writing. If it weren't for that, Xu Han probably would have continued writing for a while longer.
Lu Chuan packed up all the letters that everyone had written and said, "I will go down the mountain tomorrow morning and send these letters to them through the post station."
Xu Han instructed, "Okay, when you go to the post station tomorrow, don't forget to check if Uncle Zhang and the others have sent any letters back."
I'll also write them a letter to let them know I'm safe.
"Yes, I remember. I just finished writing it. I can send it over tomorrow."
