Chapter 55 Ice Jelly

Sometimes when there are too many earthworm castings, I'll shovel them out and set them aside to use as fertilizer for vegetables later.

Perhaps because they eat vegetable leaves and earthworms every day, the chickens, ducks and geese are growing exceptionally fast, and they have all started laying eggs.

Today, Xu Han planned to fertilize all the vegetables. She dug up all the usable earthworm castings, set them aside, and began fertilizing the vegetables.

Xu Han didn't want to bother herself, so she simply placed the fertilizer at the base of the vegetables. After fertilizing, Lu Chuan could just water them. She didn't bother digging holes to fertilize; it was too troublesome and tiring!

After fertilizing, go to the kitchen and take out the wood ash from the stove. You can sprinkle it on the vegetable leaves later to prevent the vegetables from getting infested with insects.

Because wood ash is frequently sprinkled, many leafy vegetables grow very well and are free from pests.

Some vegetables are not prone to insects, so there is no need to sprinkle wood ash on them.

After spreading the ashes, there were still some left. Xu Han simply took the basket and went to the sweet potato field outside to spread the ashes again.

Sweet potato leaves are also particularly prone to insects, especially the large green caterpillars.

Sweet potato leaves must be checked regularly, otherwise they will get infested with insects and it will be difficult to control them.

Xu Han had just finished scattering the seeds when Lu Chuan returned from the county town.

"You're back. How was the business today?" Xu Han asked.

"Not bad, I made 435 coins!" Lu Chuan had given Xu Han the money he earned from selling the game many times before, but Xu Han never accepted it and always told him to keep it for himself, since Lu Chuan would always buy something to bring back each time he came back.

It also costs money, and it would be troublesome to ask Xu Han for it every time, so Xu Han told him to keep it himself and hand it over to her for safekeeping when he had saved up five taels of silver.

After spending so much time together, they understand each other's personalities and trust each other very much.

Lu Chuan went along with Xu Han's suggestion. After all, he sometimes wanted to buy his wife gifts!

And that was indeed the case. Xu Han stayed at home and didn't go to the county town often, while Lu Chuan would almost always buy things for Xu Han whenever he went to the county town.

Sometimes it's food, sometimes it's hairpins, or other small odds and ends.

Lu Chuan would buy Xu Han anything that suited her or that she would like.

"I fertilized the vegetables in the backyard today, but I haven't watered them yet!"

"I'll water it! You take a rest!"

That's how the two of them get along; they both try to do more so as not to burden the other and not leave all the work to the other.

As for the physically demanding tasks, Xu Han would do what she could, and leave the ones she couldn't to Lu Chuan, without trying to show off. After all, there was a significant difference in strength between men and women.

The two went to the backyard together, and Xu Han placed the large vat at a suitable distance for Lu Chuan so that he could easily fetch water to water the vegetables.

Meanwhile, I went to prepare to make ice jelly.

First, take out an appropriate amount of ice jelly seeds, put them into a gauze, tie the gauze tightly with string, and rinse it slightly with clean water.

Then soak it in a basin of water for a while, and then start kneading the ice jelly.

Keep squeezing and kneading with both hands until the water inside becomes viscous, then you can stop.

Scoop out and discard the large bubbles on top of the ice jelly water with a spoon, otherwise the ice jelly won't taste good.

Xu Han planned to make several different flavors of ice jelly. Then she took out a dragon fruit and two peaches from her spatial storage.

Divide the agar jelly into three portions. Then, crush the dragon fruit and peaches and pour them into separate bowls. Add an appropriate amount of lime water and start stirring quickly.

Stir until the ice jelly becomes resistant to stirring.

This completes the preparation of three different flavored ice jelly desserts: original, dragon fruit, and peach.

After everything is done, put it in a water tank to chill for a while. Once the ice jelly has solidified, it's ready to eat.

While waiting for this opportunity, Xu Han made some ingredients for the ice jelly.

Chop up the fruit you want to eat, and add some hawthorn slices from the space.

There weren't many hawthorn slices, just a little bit. When the hawthorns ripen, I'll make some myself to eat with ice jelly. It's sweet and sour, and very delicious!

Take out the peanuts you bought earlier, shell them, roast them in a pan, chop them up, and add them to the ice jelly later.

Finally, take out the brown sugar from the space, make a bowl of strong brown sugar water and set it aside for later use.

This was my first time making it, and I didn't have enough ingredients. I just added whatever I had on hand. Next time I go to the pastry shop, I'll see if they have any dried fruit or anything like that. It would taste great if I added those in!

After preparing the toppings, I brought out the ice jelly and saw that it had solidified. I ladled out a bowl of each type and added different toppings.

I tried it, and mmm! That's the taste! It's icy cold and has a nice chewy texture—it's so refreshing in the summer!

It's especially delicious when it's hot!

Xu Han quickly took the bowl to the backyard so that Lu Chuan could also taste it!

As soon as Lu Chuan put the food in his mouth, Xu Han couldn't wait to ask, "How is it? Is it delicious? I didn't add much sugar to this bowl, so it shouldn't be too sweet."

"It's really refreshing and delicious! It's not too sweet, and I really like it."

"I made a lot more. Having a bowl of this after work or after a meal will really cool you down!"

"Could you make it spicy and sour? With chili oil and vinegar?"

Xu Han was taken aback. The ice jelly she ate always had fruit and brown sugar syrup, so it seemed like she could also add vinegar and chili!

"I haven't tried it either, but you can give it a try, it should work!" So the two went to the kitchen and made another hot and sour dish.

Lu Chuan thought it was alright, but Xu Han felt something was off; she felt that ice jelly should actually have fruit and syrup added...

Xu Han prefers regular ice jelly to spicy and sour ice jelly, proving that stereotypes have stuck with her.

Compared to Xu Han, Lu Chuan readily accepted the sour and spicy ice jelly! It seemed like that's how it should be eaten.

Xu Han suddenly realized that ice jelly can't be made spicy or sour, but pea jelly can! Why hadn't she thought of that!

Pea jelly can be eaten as a meal, and since we have a millstone at home now, we can easily make it ourselves.

But there were no peas at home, so Xu Han said to Lu Chuan...

“We can make pea jelly, which is very refreshing and can be eaten as a meal, but we don’t have any peas at home. Next time you go to the county town, you can buy more to bring back! Because I don’t eat it often, I hadn’t thought about pea jelly at all before.”

“Okay, then I’ll buy more next time I go to the county town, and we can try making it ourselves first,” Lu Chuan readily agreed.

After each person ate a bowl of ice jelly, neither of them was hungry anymore, so naturally they didn't cook dinner. They decided to postpone it and just take food from their spatial storage when they got hungry later.
