Chapter 60 Tea Eggs

Mixed grain rice tastes pretty good! You can go to the county town to buy some mixed grains and make your own mixed grain rice.

Eating white rice every day for a long time will eventually make you feel like it's not tasty anymore.

Adding a little sweet potato or other grains to rice while steaming it makes it taste great. It saves on white rice and allows you to change up your staple food with different flavors.

After dinner, the two sat in the yard and started shelling soybeans.

They chatted while shelling beans.

"The corn and beans are almost ripe. We'll be very busy during the autumn harvest. I want to take advantage of this time to make more food and store it in my space so we can eat it during the harvest," Xu Han said to Lu Chuan.

"Sure, the autumn harvest will be very tiring, and I definitely won't want to cook then."

"But if you don't eat well, your body will be severely depleted. Now that we have space to store food, we can make more and put it in the space. We can just take it out and eat it whenever we want," Lu Chuan replied.

“That’s what I think too. After the autumn harvest, many things in the mountains can be picked. You’ll be going into the mountains to hunt again, and I’m thinking of picking more mountain products. We’ll both be very busy. There simply won’t be time to cook those delicious and complicated meals every day.”

"Okay, then I won't go hunting tomorrow. I'll go chop some firewood first so you can use it when you cook at home, so you don't have to chop firewood yourself!"

"Okay, starting tomorrow, I'll cook extra food every time I cook and store it in my space. I'll also prepare some food in advance during my spare time. I'll try not to cook during the autumn harvest and try to pick more mountain produce to save for the years of famine."

After making the decision, the two went their separate ways the next day.

Xu Han got up early, ate breakfast, and first boiled a large pot of eggs, planning to use them to make tea eggs later.

Tea eggs taste better than boiled eggs! When she was working, Xu Han would buy tea eggs almost every morning. She would also cook them when she was back in her hometown.

So making tea eggs was incredibly easy for Xu Han. She could make a lot, which made them convenient to eat later.

First, wash the surface of the eggs clean, then put them in a pot and start boiling for about seven or eight minutes, until they are slightly runny. Don't overcook them, because they will be braised later!

After the eggs have cooled, use a spatula to crack the shells to make them easier to absorb the flavors later.

Then start preparing the broth for boiling tea eggs. Add appropriate amount of water to the pot, along with spices such as light soy sauce, dark soy sauce, Sichuan peppercorns, star anise, bay leaves, cinnamon, and rock sugar.

Adding an appropriate amount of black tea leaves is essential for making tea eggs. How can eggs cooked without tea leaves be called tea eggs?

Once everything is ready, bring the water to a boil over a high flame, add the eggs, cook for a short while, then turn off the heat and transfer them to a large wooden basin to soak for an afternoon.

The tea eggs can be eaten in the evening.

After finishing all that, Xu Han closed the courtyard gate, picked up the wooden bucket, and walked towards the stream.

Yesterday, while I was collecting snails, I thought there might be small crabs in the stream, so I went to see if I could catch some.

We came to this stream, but after looking for a long time, we still couldn't see any crabs in the river.

I suddenly remembered seeing in a short video that crabs always hide under rocks.

I don't know if there are crabs under the rock, let's lift the rock and take a look!

The stones were quite heavy. Xu Han found some stones that she could lift and started to look at them. Under the first stone, hmm! Nothing.

I tried the next one, but still nothing...

She searched several places but didn't find any small crabs. She did see some eels, but Xu Han didn't dare to catch them.

It looks like a snake, slippery and covered in slime, and impossible to catch, so let's just forget about it!

I washed my hands, picked up the bucket, and went home.

When they got home, Lu Chuan had already put away the traps. They saw the game in the yard, but Lu Chuan himself was nowhere to be seen; he must have gone to chop firewood!

He stored the wild game in his spatial storage, accumulated it, and then processed it all at once. Afterward, he arrived outside the wasteland.

The scallions I planted earlier have grown quite large. Now I need to seal the trenches around them so that the white parts of the scallions can grow longer and the scallions will grow even larger.

If the ditch isn't sealed in time, the scallions will grow too tall and become crooked, growing worse and worse.

Before sealing the ditch, let's apply some fertilizer. Xu Han took a bucket of manure and a shovel to fetch the cow dung that Lu Chuan had dumped next to the wasteland last time, and applied it to the roots of the scallions as base fertilizer.

The cow dung has been dried, so applying it directly to the roots of the scallions is just right and won't burn them.

Spread the seeds evenly around the roots, then use a shovel to cover the roots of the scallions, creating a high mound. Tightly wrap around the roots.

After everything was finished, the sun was already very strong, and Xu Han was covered in sweat, her hair was soaked.

I didn't want to continue working on this in the afternoon, so I persisted until I finished processing all the scallions before getting up to go home.

When I got home, I first grabbed a bowl of ice jelly and ate it while resting.

After finishing her bowl of ice jelly, Xu Han carried the water she had dried in the yard to the bathroom, intending to take a shower first. She came out covered in sweat, feeling sticky and uncomfortable.

Since the weather got hot, Xu Han often sun-drys the water in the yard. The sun is strong, and the water gets warm, just right for taking a bath.

Sometimes, after a nap or after working and sweating, I can just fetch water and take a shower without having to boil water in the sweltering heat. It's very convenient.

After taking a shower, Xu Han went to the kitchen and started making lunch.

Lu Chuan didn't go hunting today; he'll definitely be back for dinner soon.

The weather is so hot and dry, let's make garlic noodles, which we both love!

Xu Han hadn't finished cooking when Lu Chuan returned. The sun was too strong; if they kept working like that, they'd get heatstroke.

"You're back. Dinner isn't ready yet. Have a bowl of ice jelly to cool down!"

"Okay, I'll go take a shower first, and then eat. It's too hot, and my clothes are all soaked."

"Okay, I've sun-dried some extra water today! I've already washed it, there's still some outside, you can just go and get some."

When Lu Chuan heard Xu Han say that, he went to fetch water to take a bath.

When Lu Chuan was hunting in the mountains, the weather was very hot, and he often went to the river to bathe at noon. A quick rinse would cool him down a lot.

After taking a bath, Lu Chuan went to the main room and drank some honeysuckle tea that Xu Han had prepared in advance. He immediately felt much of the heat in his body subside.

Ever since the honeysuckle was dried at home, Xu Han would often brew some tea, let it cool, and place it in the main room so she could drink it directly when thirsty.

Sometimes I brew honeysuckle water, sometimes locust flower water, and occasionally I brew some jam water.
