Chapter 64 Harvesting Corn

After they finished eating, the two sat in the courtyard, chatting casually, occasionally sipping fruit wine and reminiscing about dinner, enjoying this rare moment of leisure. Neither of them wanted to break this precious time of relaxation...

The next morning, Xu Han first laid out the mint to dry, and then began her busy day again, repeating the same tasks as before.

On the first day, we dried potatoes.

The next day, we caught snails and stir-fried them.

On the third day, the sweet potato stems were dried in the sun.

On the fourth day, I did housework and picked vegetables.

On the fifth and sixth days, steamed buns were made.

On the seventh day, it was raining, and I was at home preparing stir-fried dishes.

On the eighth day, we picked mushrooms on the mountain.

For several days in a row, they were preparing for the upcoming autumn harvest.

The ninth day arrived in the blink of an eye. Xu Han got up early in the morning and took out the mushrooms she had picked the day before to dry.

Then I went to the backyard, cleaned up the chicken and duck coop, and picked the vegetables from the vegetable garden and stored them in the space!

After finishing everything, I picked up a winnowing basket and scissors and went outside the wasteland. The scallions I had planted earlier had already produced seeds, with round scallion bulbs containing black scallion seeds.

They are fully ripe now, and the onion seeds can be harvested, dried, and used for seed production.

Cut the scallion bulbs off with scissors, place them on a winnowing basket, and let them dry for a day or two. The black scallion seeds inside will naturally fall off. Store them well after drying, and they can be replanted around October.

The scallions that have finished producing seeds are already old, and the white part will become hollow over time. If you're not going to pick and eat them now, you can cut them off first.

After a while, new scallions will sprout from the roots and grow into tender new scallions.

After finishing everything, Xu Han went home and made beef noodles for lunch.

Recently, Xu Han has been cooking a full pot of food every time she cooks. She puts the leftovers in her space, and now there is a lot of cooked food in her space.

These cooked foods are prepared so that there's no need to cook during the autumn harvest.

It rained the day before yesterday, and the summer sun is very strong. Now the ground outside is no longer muddy, and we can go out and work in the fields.

The two had already discussed it yesterday and would start the autumn harvest tomorrow.

The corn and beans were planted in the spring and are now fully ripe. We'll start harvesting the corn tomorrow…

After waking up from her afternoon nap, Xu Han went to the tool shed first, took out her sickle, and sharpened it so it would be easier to use for harvesting beans later.

Prepare the baskets as well, and set them aside for tomorrow to carry corn.

Hoes, machetes, and other tools need to be prepared in advance, as the stalks need to be cut down after the corn is harvested.

After preparing all the tools, Xu Han went to the yard and swept it clean with a large broom, putting away all the clutter.

The corn we harvest tomorrow needs to be spread out in the yard to dry, so let's clean the yard now!

After finishing everything, the sun hadn't set yet, and Xu Han had nothing more to do. Looking at the sky, she realized it was still early, so she picked up her basket and went out again.

I plan to go to the hillside near my home to pick ice jelly fruit. It's been a long time since I last came here to pick ice jelly fruit, so I should be able to pick more this time.

Upon arriving at our destination, we indeed saw that many ice jelly fruits were ripe and their peels had dried out, making it the perfect time to pick them.

Xu Han quickly put the basket on the ground, put on gloves, and began picking.

The ice jelly fruit is ripe in abundance right now, making harvesting incredibly easy. You don't even need to search for it; 80% of them are fully ripe. Just pick them with your eyes closed!

As darkness fell, Xu Han returned home, where Lu Chuan was processing the game he had recently hunted.

"You're back! Where did you go? I didn't see you anywhere," Lu Chuan asked.

"I've prepared everything I need for tomorrow. Since it's still early, I'm going to pick some ice jelly fruit on the nearby hillside!"

"How is it! Are all the ice jelly fruits ripe now?"

"Most of them are fully ripe and ready to be picked. I picked a lot in just a short time today. I haven't finished picking them all yet. I'll go pick more after the autumn harvest."

"Let me take out the prey from my space for you! Let's process it together, and I'll go cook!" Xu Han said, taking out all the prey that hadn't been processed recently, and then went into the kitchen to start cooking dinner.

After dinner, the two peeled some ice jelly fruit for a while before going to rest. After all, they had to get up early the next day to pick corn in the cornfield, so it wasn't good to sleep too late tonight, otherwise they wouldn't have the energy to work tomorrow...

The next day, as soon as the rooster crowed, the two got up to pick the corn while it was still cool.

Each person carried a basket on their back, wore long sleeves and trousers, gloves, and a scarf wrapped around their head, fully armed except for their eyes.

Harvesting corn is no easy task. If you're not fully protected, you'll get scratches all over your body, which are incredibly itchy and painful.

The two arrived at the cornfield and got to work, breaking off corn with one hand and throwing it into their baskets. Once the baskets were full, they would move on to the next one.

After filling all the baskets, Xu Han took them home and spread the corn out to dry in the open space in the yard.

Then Xu Han picked the corn herself, while Lu Chuan cut down the corn stalks that had already been picked.

They were stacked in rows on the ground. After drying, they could be taken home and used as fuel.

It took the two of them a whole day to harvest all the corn from the three acres of land.

Because we had picked a lot of fresh corn beforehand, it wasn't too tiring to collect them, and we finished quickly.

After a long day of work, they only had a short rest at noon when the sun was at its strongest. When they got home, they were both exhausted and hot, and Xu Han didn't feel like cooking.

After each person ate a serving of ice jelly, Xu Han went to take a shower first.

After taking a shower, I sat in the yard to relax for a while. At that moment, Lu Chuan also finished showering and came out.

The two of them each moved a chair and sat down next to the corn pile to start husking corn.

When you pick corn, it comes with its outer husk, so you need to peel off the husk now.

When peeling the corn, you can't peel it all off. Leave a few soft leaves so you can braid the corn and hang it up to dry. That way, you'll have space to dry the beans.

Lu Chuan peeled corn husks, while Xu Han braided the corn, like braiding a pigtail, stringing them together and then hanging them under the eaves to dry.

Hanging under the eaves, it doesn't need to be brought indoors when it rains, and it stays dry. It can also get sunlight, and it won't get moldy or spoiled even if it's exposed to the wind.

After working for a while, the two got hungry. Xu Han took out the food she had prepared earlier from her spatial storage. After eating, they continued peeling corn.

They peeled corn until after 11 o'clock, but they still hadn't finished. So they stopped peeling and went back to their room to rest.

We still need to harvest beans tomorrow! I must get a good night's sleep tonight, otherwise I won't have the energy to work tomorrow. I can only continue husking corn when I have some free time.
