Chapter 79 Picking Chestnuts

The two set off early the next morning, their main goal for the day being to pick wild grapes and jujubes.

The two first arrived at the place where they picked wild jujubes. Looking around, they saw that there were already many ripe jujubes, almost all of them were completely red and ripe.

Instead of picking them one by one, Xu Han took out a bamboo pole and a small piece of oilcloth from her spatial storage and prepared to start picking the dates.

First, spread the oilcloth on the ground, and then start using bamboo poles to knock down the sour jujubes.

Wild jujube trees have many small thorns that are very prickly, and wild jujubes are much smaller than cultivated ones, making them difficult to pick. It's much faster to knock them down with a bamboo pole.

With a single tap of the stick, the jujubes fell to the ground with a clatter. The ripe fruit fell off with a single tap, and after a few taps, there were hardly any fruits left on the tree.

Since the jujubes are wild and grow in less than ideal locations, the oilcloth cannot catch all the falling jujubes.

Many of them have fallen to the ground and will need to be picked up later, but it would be much better to catch them with an oilcloth, at least some of them will be caught.

The two poured the sour dates from the oilcloth into their baskets and then spread them out under the next tree. Lu Chuan continued to pick dates, while Xu Han picked up the sour dates that had just fallen to the ground.

They repeated this process until mid-afternoon, when they had finished knocking down all the wild jujube trees nearby. The two then started walking back, intending to pick all the wild grapes they hadn't yet gathered along the way.

They searched for several days in a row until they had found all the wild fruits in the nearby mountains, and the harvest was quite abundant!

Early this morning, the two set off into the mountains again, their main goal for the day being to collect chestnuts.

I found many chestnut trees while looking for wild fruits in the mountains these past few days. The chestnuts were already ripe, but I didn't pick any because I was busy picking wild fruits.

Chestnuts can be picked a little later once they are ripe, but wild fruits will rot if they are not picked in time, so you have to pick wild fruits first.

The two first went to a chestnut tree near their home and found that there were already many chestnuts, which fell down on their own after ripening.

Seeing this, Lu Chuan began to climb the tree and knock down the chestnuts on the higher branches, while Xu Han, wearing her electric scooter helmet, stood under the tree and knocked down the chestnuts on the lower branches.

Cracking chestnuts is a very strenuous task, requiring constant head lifting, and Xu Han's neck soon became sore.

Seeing this, Lu Chuan quickly said, "Go pick the chestnuts! I'll knock them down from the tree. The chestnuts at the bottom don't require you to look up; you can just climb up a bit and bend down to knock them down."

"Okay, then you can take your time picking them yourself! I'm going to pick some chestnuts."

Xu Han took out a special pair of tongs and started picking chestnuts. The chestnut shells had many thorns on them, which were very sharp, so she couldn't pick them up directly with her hands. She had to use the tongs to pick them up one by one.

Chestnuts with their shells on were taken home to be peeled, and some fell off. Chestnuts without shells were collected separately and placed in a basket on my back.

After Lu Chuan finished picking the chestnuts from this tree, he also came down to help pick up more chestnuts.

They quickly finished picking all the chestnuts and then moved on to the next chestnut tree.

The two of them had thoroughly explored the area around their home, and knew exactly where the chestnut trees were, so they didn't need to search for them anymore.

Upon arriving at the next chestnut tree, Xu Han immediately began picking up the fallen chestnuts, no longer helping Lu Chuan to harvest them; she simply started picking them up herself!

After all, they had just witnessed how easily Lu Chuan climbed up to knock down chestnuts from below, which was indeed much faster than if they had to do it themselves from below.

Why make things difficult for yourself? Just stick to picking chestnuts!

At noon, Xu Han took out water and food from her spatial storage. After a simple meal, she continued grinding chestnuts.

It wasn't until it was almost dark that the two of them finished knocking down the last chestnut tree before they started hurrying home.

In the past few days, Lu Chuan has been helping me find wild fruits and other things in the mountains. We haven't gone hunting yet. After picking chestnuts, there are also walnuts and pine nuts!

However, there's no rush for either of these, as the pine nut harvesting season can continue until early spring next year.

However, it's definitely better to pick them as early as possible, because once the pine cones are fully mature, they dry out and naturally fall to the ground, causing the pine nuts to break apart, resulting in fewer pine cones and nuts on the ground.

Walnuts are best harvested after they are fully ripe and the outer shell has cracked. Otherwise, the outer shell is difficult to peel and it's quite troublesome.

After finishing harvesting the chestnuts nearby in the next few days, Lu Chuan will start his autumn hunt, and after returning from the hunt, he will pick walnuts.

After the two returned home, Xu Han poured all the chestnuts from the space into the yard to dry.

When you have time, you should peel the chestnuts. Let them dry slightly, and the shells will crack open, making them easier to peel.

After spreading out all the chestnuts, Xu Han went to the backyard to help water the vegetables!

It hasn't rained for a long time, and watering the vegetables every day is quite a hassle.

After watering all the plants, it was completely dark. The two of them took a shower, changed into clean clothes, and then started eating dinner.

Xu Han hasn't cooked for the past few days, and has been eating all the food from her space.

They were all steaming hot when taken out of the space, just like freshly cooked food.

After dinner, Lu Chuan washed the dishes, and Xu Han did the laundry. After finishing the laundry, they took advantage of the short break to clean the house.

Xu Han is a very clean person, but sometimes she is lazy and doesn't want to clean. However, when she sees that there is a lot of dust, she will start a thorough cleaning as if she is crazy.

However, since there are only two people in the house, it's not too messy. We usually put things back in their place after using them, and we don't leave them scattered around.

Under Xu Han's influence, Lu Chuan has become increasingly fond of cleanliness. Sometimes, if he sees the floor is a little dirty, he will immediately start mopping it.

After cleaning, Xu Han came to the yard and saw Lu Chuan peeling chestnuts with tongs, so she moved a stool, took out tongs, and started peeling chestnuts with him.

After peeling for about half an hour, it was almost ten o'clock when the two of them got up and went back to their room to sleep.

After the Mid-Autumn Festival, the temperature in the mountains dropped lower and lower. Sometimes you need to wear a jacket when working in the yard at night.

The next morning, the two set off early as usual. Today they were going to pick chestnuts in a place a little further away. The chestnuts near their home had all been picked yesterday, so they had to go to a place further away.

It was the same work as yesterday, with no difference, except that the two of them would start looking for chestnut trees this afternoon.

Although Lu Chuan is often in the mountains and should know exactly what's there, he can only vaguely remember things in distant places or locations he doesn't visit often.

Moreover, Lu Chuan had never paid any attention to these things before.

It was during a mushroom picking trip with Xu Han that Xu Han pointed to a chestnut tree and told Lu Chuan that it was edible.

In autumn, pick more and store them to make pastries or cook. It was only after that that Lu Chuan began to pay attention to the location of these chestnut trees.
