Chapter 99 Roasted Chestnuts

But when famine strikes, things will be tough. We don’t even know if we’ll be able to eat meat every day then!

After washing the potatoes, Xu Han went to the front yard, poured them into the large pot outside, added water, and started cooking them over a large fire.

Since one pot wasn't enough to cook it all, Xu Han used two pots from the kitchen to cook it all together.

Fortunately, the pot outside was quite large; otherwise, cooking with three pots at once would have been impossible!

When it was lunchtime, Xu Han took out a bowl of rice from her spatial storage and ate it with chicken stew with mushrooms. After finishing, she also had a bowl of seaweed soup to drink.

After the potatoes are cooked, take them out and put them in a bamboo basket to drain the water slightly before storing them in the space.

Xu Han hadn't eaten the chestnuts she'd picked up a while ago, so she decided to take some out and roast them later.

Roast a lot more and keep them as snacks; you can have a few to eat when you're bored.

First, wash the fresh chestnuts thoroughly, then make a cross-shaped cut on each chestnut. This step is not easy, as the chestnuts tend to roll away easily and are difficult to cut.

Xu Han found a small piece of wood, shaved it flat, and then used a curved knife to carve out a circle inside it, securing the chestnut inside so it wouldn't easily escape.

Each chestnut needs to be scored, otherwise it will easily splatter when roasting and be difficult to peel. Chestnuts roasted this way taste sweeter!

After preparing about a pot of chestnuts, Xu Han started cooking them. She brought them to a boil over high heat and then cooked them for 20 minutes.

After adding firewood, we went into the yard and lit the oven. Once the chestnuts were cooked, we could roast them directly.

To make the cooked chestnuts even sweeter, you can mix them with a sugar syrup.

Add white sugar, honey, and a little cooking oil to water, stir well, and then mix it over the chestnuts.

Take out a baking tray and arrange the chestnuts evenly one by one. Now you can start roasting the chestnuts.

Once the chestnut skins crack, they can be taken out.

Xu Han tried one, and it was sweet, soft, and delicious. It tasted even better when it was hot!

There were still some left to roast, so we continued roasting until all the chestnuts were roasted. We then lined them with banana leaves, put them in a small bamboo basket, and stored them in our storage space. We can take them out and eat them whenever we want.

To make it easier to carry things, Xu Han picked a lot of banana leaves! She also bought a lot of oil paper to line things, which she would throw away after use so the basket wouldn't get dirty.

After finishing all that, the dough had risen, so we continued steaming the buns.

She was busy until evening before all the steamed buns were finally steamed. Steaming buns is hard work, and after steaming all the buns, Xu Han was so tired that she could barely lift her arms.

After taking out dinner from her spatial storage and eating it, Xu Han went to wash the beans.

I've been here for so long and haven't eaten any bean sprouts yet. The beans have been harvested for a while now, so I can sprout some to eat.

Pick out any bad or rotten beans, otherwise they will easily mold during fermentation.

Wash the selected beans thoroughly, then fill them with water and soak them in a wooden basin overnight. Process them the next day.

I soaked some mung beans in the same way to sprout them and eat them.

After soaking all the water, it was time for bed. A good night's sleep ensued...

The next morning, after having breakfast, Xu Han started to process the bean sprouts that had been soaked the day before. She first rinsed the beans several times with water, and then put them into a bamboo sieve with holes. The bamboo sieve was used to help the soybeans take root better.

Then, place a layer of damp cotton cloth on top and cover it directly.

Finally, place the bamboo sieve in a dark place, away from direct sunlight, otherwise the bean sprouts will turn green.

You need to rinse them with water every day and then put a damp towel on them. If you have time, it's best to rinse them a couple more times to cool them down. The bean sprouts should be ready in about four or five days.

After finishing with the bean sprouts, Xu Han took out the duck from her spatial storage and began processing it.

Xu Han always keeps the down from the ducks when she processes them! One or two ducks certainly don't have much down, but she has processed so many ducks over this period of time that she has accumulated quite a bit of down.

They can be used to make several down jackets by winter!

But there's still an important problem that hasn't been solved: what should be done with the duck down? Xu Han has never dealt with these things before.

If I make clothes out of cotton, won't the down escape?

In her past life, down jackets didn't seem to be made of cotton; they were mostly made of umbrella fabric or something similar, which Xu Han didn't understand.

There aren't any other fabrics available right now. In this era, besides linen and cotton, there are only satin and silk. I don't know if it will work or if it will shed. We'll have to try it out when the time comes!

By mid-afternoon, Xu Han was still processing the ducks, plucking their feathers until her eyes were blurry, when Lu Chuan finally returned, having hunted another large wild boar. It was quite a large one!

Lu Chuan went to deal with the wild boar, while Xu Han continued to deal with the ducks.

They ate the food from the space for dinner, as both of them were busy processing the wild game and didn't cook dinner again.

At dinner time, Lu Chuan suddenly said, "When I went hunting this time, I found a pond with lots of lotus roots. The lotus pods were all old, with only a few tender ones. Shall we pick some to bring back?"

“Sure! We can use the lotus seeds we pick to make porridge, and the lotus hearts can be used to make tea!” Xu Han said.

“Alright, I’ll go to the county town to sell my game tomorrow and bring the boat back with me. The day after tomorrow, we’ll go pick lotus pods.”

"Okay, we can dig up some lotus roots again in a while! Making lotus root powder to drink would be great too."

"Okay, bring back a lot later."

After the meal, everyone went back to handling their own tasks.

Before she knew it, it was the next day. After getting up, Xu Han rinsed the bean sprouts, covered them again, and placed them in a dark place.

Then start shaping the persimmons. After drying for a few days, the persimmons are ready to be shaped. After shaping them several times, it's done.

You don't need to pick the persimmons when you're squeezing them; just hang them under the eaves and squeeze them directly. Once you've squeezed them all, it's lunchtime again.

After lunch, Xu Han picked up her basket and went out, picking goji berries along the way as she walked towards the place where she usually launched her boat.

Lu Chuan will be back soon. It would take him a lot of effort to tow the boat home by himself. Since I don't have anything important to do at home, I might as well go and pick him up!

Why not just use spatial manipulation to cheat? Why go through all that trouble?
