The two followed the same route they had taken, since there were more locust trees there. They could cut more branches on the way back and pick them slowly when they got home.
We sawed trees as we walked, and by nightfall we still hadn't made it home. Fortunately, it was still about half an hour away.
Lu Chuan lit a torch to illuminate the way, while Xu Han followed closely behind him with a small torch.
The dogs were very obedient and didn't run around, staying close to their two owners.
The puppies are now about the same size as Black Wind and Black Spot, almost a year old. They've almost reached their full size and won't change much later on.
Although the dogs have grown up, Xu Han finds their appetites unbearable to watch. They eat so much at every meal, it breaks her heart every time she sees it.
After this trip, Xu Han and Lu Chuan decided that once they got home, they would start letting the animals roam freely and find food near their home when they weren't hunting.
Just like last year's Black Wind and Black Spot, they adopted a free-range approach or traded prey for food. After all, Lu Chuan hadn't been hunting recently, and there was no meat source at home, so the meat in the space was definitely not enough to eat.
Not only do four adults need meat, but the six dogs need even more.
Therefore, we should stock up on more meat this year, if our ability allows.
Before they knew it, the two had arrived home. As soon as they opened the gate, Lu Chuan went straight to the backyard without stopping.
Xu Han went straight into the kitchen and boiled a large pot of water to take a bath later.
After taking a shower, the two ate dinner together in the kitchen. After three days of exploring the mountains, Xu Han felt very tired and didn't eat much for dinner, just some porridge.
After dinner, Xu Han fell asleep immediately, but Lu Chuan didn't feel tired at all and was still full of energy.
However, he didn't do anything else. Seeing that Xu Han was tired, he also went to rest early.
The next morning, Xu Han got up and started steaming the beef jerky she had made a few days earlier. The beef jerky was now about 80-90% dry and had a very red color, making it look very appetizing.
These are not safe to eat yet! Although the beef jerky has been dried, it is still raw beef and must be steamed in a pot before it can be eaten.
Xu Han laid all the beef jerky in the steamer. Since she couldn't finish it all at once, she used another set of steamers and started steaming both pots at the same time.
After steaming, Xu Han couldn't wait to try it. She couldn't bite it directly, so she slowly tore off a small piece with her hands and put it in her mouth to taste it.
I took a bite and my eyes widened instantly. It was so delicious, incredibly delicious, fragrant and chewy.
Because I made it myself, I put in a lot of ingredients, and it tastes much better than the ones I bought in my previous life!
Before Xu Han had even finished eating, Lu Chuan came in from outside carrying a bucket of fish. Xu Han quickly called him into the kitchen, took a piece of beef jerky from the pot, and handed it to him, saying, "Try it and see if it's good."
Lu Chuan caught it, smelled it, and thought it smelled pretty good. Then he took a bite of the beef jerky, but couldn't bite it off. He took another bite and said, "It's delicious, but a bit dry. However, it's very fragrant, and the more you chew, the more fragrant it becomes!"
"This is beef jerky, it's definitely dry! Biting it directly is too hard on your teeth. You can bite it little by little or tear it apart to eat. When you have nothing to do, you can eat a couple of pieces. It's very satisfying and helps to cleanse your teeth."
Following Xu Han's method, Lu Chuan tried it again, and it was indeed different. The more he ate, the more he wanted to eat, and he couldn't stop.
After everyone ate two or three pieces, Xu Han put the steamed beef jerky back into the winnowing basket to dry. She would put it away after the surface moisture had dried, otherwise it would be difficult to preserve if it was too wet.
After all the beef jerky was dried, Xu Han went to the waterfall to fetch water, while Lu Chuan stayed home and used the water from the water tank to water the chives.
The chives have wilted because they haven't been watered for several days, and the greens outside are almost dry. The peas are doing alright, though, with no drooping leaves.
It hasn't rained for a long time, so the soil is very dry and water doesn't penetrate thoroughly. With the current weather, we need to water the plants about every five or six days.
Fortunately, it's much easier to get water now, otherwise it would take a long time just to water the plants every day.
Even though fetching water was easy, it still took the two of them two days to irrigate all the land.
The next day at noon, the weather was very hot, and Xu Han said, "How about we have cold noodles today? The sun is too scorching in this weather."
"Okay, let's have cold noodles then! After lunch, let's take a nap first, and then water the seedlings when the sun isn't so strong, otherwise they'll die from the heat."
Xu Han continued, "Let's plant the corn and soybeans tomorrow! We can't wait any longer. The temperature is already quite high, so the seedlings will sprout quickly."
Although it's not yet planting season, the temperature was about two weeks ago enough to plant them; the earlier they plant, the sooner they'll mature. The weather will only get drier later, and watering will be a major undertaking.
Lu Chuan agreed with Xu Han's statement, and then the two of them went to make cold noodles together.
On a sweltering day, a bowl of cold noodles can instantly dispel all your worries.
The days passed by at a leisurely pace, and before we knew it, it was already May.
During this period, Lu Chuan and Xu Han did the same work every day: constantly watering the crops in the field.
The corn and soybeans in the yard have grown quite tall, and the vegetables in the field have long been harvested and neatly stacked in bundles, all of which have been put into the storage space.
The vegetables planted in the backyard have already started to bear fruit. Because part of the vegetable garden in the backyard was dug into a water storage pond, this year's vegetables were partly planted in the backyard and partly in the wasteland outside.
The backyard is planted with vegetables such as cucumbers and tomatoes, while some easier-to-grow and more drought-resistant vegetables, such as peppers and green beans, are planted in the same spot where pumpkins were planted last year.
This year, Xu Han only planted a few pumpkins and winter melons, not many, but enough to make a fresh meal, since pumpkins and winter melons are particularly good at producing fruit.
Xu Han not only planted these, but also planted some large gourds next to the stream. These large gourds can not only be eaten as vegetables, but also be used as water ladles after they mature.
We only had two water ladles at home, and we hadn't thought of planting gourds until the New Year. We bought the seeds when we went to the prefectural city.
I originally didn't plan to plant so many things, mainly because I didn't want to water them every day, but I ended up planting too many anyway.
