Chapter 34 Criteria for Choosing a Daughter-in-Law

Although they could eat meat often, the meat they ate was different from this meat. Roast chicken and roast duck all tasted the same. Sometimes, to change things up, they would eat self-heating hot pot or beef jerky, but compared to this meal, it was still inferior.

Xia Hua also ate a piece of braised pork. "Hmm, you're right, it's quite delicious. But wasn't it your eldest daughter-in-law who cooked? Why did it change to your second son's wife?"

“Don’t even mention it,” An Shuyi said, shoveling rice into her mouth. “My eldest daughter-in-law’s cooking skills are really terrible. She has no talent at all. I don’t want her to cook such good meat into mush. You haven’t tasted it. The mush that Zhao Shi makes is just awful.”

When she first transmigrated, she ate there twice, and each time she only ate half a bowl more, but every time she ate, she felt like cursing.

Xia Hua picked up a piece of radish for her and said, "Then it seems we should let your second daughter-in-law do it from now on. The braised pork today was pretty good, but there weren't enough seasonings. If there were all the seasonings, I think she would do it even better. You should teach her more in the future, so that we can both enjoy it!"

“My daughter-in-law is no good either. Although she is very obedient now, her cooking habits are still there. She is reluctant to skimp on oil and salt. It seems I need to find a better daughter-in-law.”

"Anyway, my second son is about the same age and can get married. As long as the girl knows a little cooking, I'll persuade her to be my daughter-in-law, even if I have to talk myself hoarse."

An Shuyi couldn't help but burst into laughter, "Aren't you afraid that the two of them will not get along if you do this? Wouldn't that be hurting them?"

Xia Hua glared at her. "Do you think I'm that kind of person? When women here get married, it's all about food and clothing, isn't it? As long as I treat her well, the second son won't dare to misbehave. And if we have two more children in the future, it's better than marrying someone else."

"At least as long as she's obedient, I won't scold her. Look at my eldest daughter-in-law, she's completely under my thumb now. As long as she's obedient, she'll have a good life ahead of her."

An Shuyi nodded, agreeing with her point. After all, as long as her daughter-in-law was obedient and didn't cause her trouble, the two of them were easy to get along with, at least there were no mother-in-law/daughter-in-law problems.

After finishing their meal, the two parted ways and went back to their respective resting places. Although they had a good relationship, they still had to keep a certain distance because they both had daughters-in-law, and if they were too close, their daughters-in-law would feel awkward.

So even though her parents followed them in fleeing the famine, their resting place was still some distance away, as neither was convenient.

After handing the bowl to the eldest son's wife, An Shuyi wandered around the area. Her current health didn't allow her to be careless, otherwise she would feel unwell and suffer.

After they had walked quite a bit, she returned to the carriage and began to organize the things she had bought. Looking at the medical books on the carriage, she realized that she hadn't given them to Xiao Wu yet. He had also gone to Doctor Liu's place tonight, and she hadn't seen them when she came in earlier.

Looking at Xiao Liu playing with Xiao Qi outside the carriage, he asked, "Xiao Liu, do you know where your fifth brother went?"

When Xiao Liu heard his mother's voice, he replied, "Mother, my brother and eldest brother went over there. They said they were going to cut some grass to feed the horses and cows."

"Mom knows. You and Xiaoqi shouldn't play for too long. Come in and go to sleep later."

"I understand, Mother."

An Shuyi put the medical book aside, and then placed some pastries and other things in the corner. These were all bought from the shop. She still had some in her warehouse. She put them here just to let Xiao Wu and the others know.

Unfortunately, eggs don't keep well, and she didn't take out many. Besides Xiao Wu being weak and needing to replenish his body, Xiao Liu and Xiao Qi were also growing, so they needed eggs too. There were also Zhao Shi and Wu Shi, who, although they were just her daughters-in-law, were still having babies, so she couldn't mistreat them.

From now on, let them have one every morning, and we'll talk about it after they finish eating. Every little bit helps. If the weather isn't so hot, she can take more.

"Mother, I heard from Xiao Liu that you were looking for me." An Shuyi was about to take out some fabric to make clothes when she heard Xiao Wu's voice outside. It must have been him who had just returned, and Xiao Liu had told him.

"Xiao Wu, come in!"

Xiao Wu heard his mother's voice and got into the carriage. "Mother, what's wrong?"

An Shuyi looked at the thin Xiao Wu and said, "I went to Anhe Mansion today and bought you a few medical books. They're right next to you. You can read them when you have time."

“You have several older brothers who are also here to cut grass, so you don’t need to come along. Sometimes, you can just read books and learn about herbs. Don’t run around with your eldest brother. If you still have nothing to do, go find Doctor Liu and ask him for advice.”

"Mother, don't worry, my brother and I are just going to cut grass nearby, it's not far." Xiao Wu picked up the medical book. "Thank you, Mother, for remembering to buy your son a medical book even when you're in Anhe Prefecture."

"But Mother, don't buy them anymore. These medical books are so expensive. Mother should keep more money on hand. Where can I find the medical books from Doctor Liu? I can go to him to read them."

“What do you know, kid?” An Shuyi glared at him. “Dr. Liu’s books are just for you to look at, not for you to study in detail. No matter how good your memory is, it’s not as good as reading them often.”

"Don't worry, I still have money, I won't let you go hungry. As for this medical book, just read it. If there's anything you don't understand, go ask Doctor Liu. Since you want to learn, then learn it well."

Xiao Wu nodded, "Mom, I understand. I will study hard."

"With your words, I am relieved. Go and rest. Don't read for too long, or you'll ruin your eyes. Call Xiao Liu and Xiao Qi over. It's so late, you should go to sleep."

"Okay, Mother, you should get some rest too." After saying that, Xiao Wu got off the carriage with the medical book in his hand. "Xiao Liu, Xiao Mei, Mother wants you to go and rest."

"Understood, Fifth Brother," the two said in unison.

"Mom, we're here!" Little Six and Little Seven climbed onto the horse and carriage and said to their mother who was washing up.

"Mother knows, come here quickly, let me wipe your faces and hands." An Shuyi said, using the handkerchief in her hand to wipe their faces and hands. These were handkerchiefs she kept in the storeroom, but there were more outside, but she hadn't used them.

After cleaning them up and changing them into clean clothes, she put them to bed. Once they were asleep, she rubbed their clothes clean and poured the water into a large bucket that she could empty when she needed to use the restroom.

The clean clothes were left on the window and dried overnight. They were then given to wear the next day, and no one could tell they were dry.

Of course, she doesn't wash her clothes every day. She only washes them every other day because her clothes are too dirty and she's afraid of bacteria growing. Besides, she uses the same fabric for all her clothes now, so even if she changes her clothes, no one can tell.
